Germany - VBL 1. Bundesliga 2016/17

  • I have only followed the VBL for a short time. But here’s my question: with just a few weeks before training camps are set to open, it seems like several teams are still missing multiple players on their roster. Is this normal at this time of year, or put another way, are there usually a lot of signings at the last minute?

I think many teams have more players than they have announced so far. Suhl hasn't announced anyone yet but for sure they already have most of their team under contract.

  • Than

Thank you, Matthias. This is helpful. Cheers!

Additionally there is a rule, the clubs have to have at least 6 signed contracts on 1. August for the season coming. If they don't have as much, they are out. Therefore Suhl is forced to reveal at least tomorrow their roster (or at least 6 of it) with contracts.

  • 1.9 not 1.8

16.1 Der Verein ist verpflichtet, bis zum 01.09. mindestens sechs Spieler und die vollständigen Unterlagen gemäß Ziffer 16.4 im VBL-Onlineportal in der Mannschaftsmeldeliste zu erfassen.

So this rule was either changed or wrongly cited in the past - and this is not a very realistic approach, because sometimes VBL started season alrady in September in the past (for example 2008 ). But this means, that VfB Suhl can hide their plans another month.

  • This explains their roster. There's no news yet about Mancuso and Onyejekwe but I think this means they're rather unlikely to stay. Individually, Dresden's team doesn't look too impressive, so next season their results will depend a lot on what Alex Waibl can form out of these players. Should still be pretty good...

  • I have not

Correctly or not, I always think of Dresden as the best-run club in the league, having the most resources. If it is having money issues, I wonder how some of the other teams are faring? How much of the money problems are related to the additional costs of playing in the Champions League, I wonder?

But that means, that the DSC still has 1.5 million Euro available, more than any other club. For comparison: Schwerin still stays at 1.3 Million Euro, and Stuttgart also unchanged at 900.000 Euro.

But of course, what the DSC does, is altogether very expensive: they have by far the largest club office (what is a good thing generally) with 5 fulltime workers, they play as only club the next season also CL, which costs roundabout 200.000 Euro more than not playing European cups (costs are especially: expensive travelling, more than CEV cup and Challenge cup usually requires, the travel and hostage costs of referees, the laola1.tv payments for internet live streaming (the last two for the home games), the special carpet with CL logo, and this time another one is required, because Denizbank ceased CL title sponsoring).

But Schwerin and Stuttgart also have costs with European cups (Challenge resp. CEV cup), but considerably lower, at least 100.000 Euro less I guess.

Of course, this was a no-go for many former DSC players, to earn less than last season, one of the reasons, most players left or waited long to sign again (for example Myrthe Schoot). And maybe DSC will take a risk and indeed play only with 13 players (12 are minimum for CL participation) to avoid cutting single salaries even more.

In the current situation I guess the following playing strength order of the top three clubs:

    1. Stuttgart
    2. Schwerin
    3. Dresden

If this realizes in playoffs, this would be a major drawback for Dresden, because they would be no longer eligible to take part in CL. While this would require less money next season, this would make the club less interesting for sponsors too, because mostly CL matches are sold out there with the maximum of 3.000 visitors.

  • Dresdner works really well with the american players. They just miss a very strong OH to take Bartsch's place. IMHO they're the best club for next season as well.

We will get a first hint in supercup final in Berlin. I think, Stuttgart can win this in three or four sets.
