Chinese NT 2017

  • Yao Di was a disappointment at last's year Montreux. Then again at Asian Cup, losing to Kazakhstan for the first time. Got bailed out by Zhang Changning and Gong Xiangyu in the playoffs. This Montreux so far relying on Gong in the 1st match. If she doesn't improve, then she will end up like Shen Jingsi.

  • Let's focus on the whole players of Chinese NT instead of only Hui Ruo-qi, shall we?
I like the new two MBs, Gao Yi and Wang Yuan-yuan.

Both MBs, Gao Yi and Wang Yuan-yuan, did good jobs in the first match vs SUI. Let see further when the challenges are up by stronger opponents. A couple of players have not yet got the [enough] playing time in the 1st match such as Wang Chen-yue, Xu Ruo-ya... Wang Hui-min just came in at the closing of the match. Wonder whether the level of play of Zheng Yi-xin has been upped or not... Gong Xiang-yu is even more effective nowadays, she has been improving significantly. Li Jing remains good.

  • The more experienced Yao Di and Li Jing really need to improve their game in order to make it to A team. Yao still has troubles with double touches, bad decision making, and poor sets to hitters. Li Jing only plays well with her provincial team in the Chinese League.

Right, they're still the familiar faces in the NT (Gong Xiang-yu, Liu Xiao-tong, Lin Li) who propped the team in yesterday's match against NED. Hard to tell about the rest... though the young Gao Yi and partially fielded Zheng Yi-xin were still okay, overall the CHN team's performance was not great yesterday, they're struggling to stop the shining Plak, the blockers just worked with little successes while they themselves got blocked often. Losing the opening set also made the match much tougher than it supposed to be. But perhaps it's simply natural thing to deal with team experimentation, new compositions that hardly play together... look forward for better cohesion as the team goes with more matches.

  • Diao Lin-yu is injured. I don't hope her injury be too heavy.
    Congratuations!
Chinese NT got the bronze medal of Montreux 2017.

    My favourite roster of Chinese
    male NT:
    S - Li Run-ming, Zhan Guo-jun
OP - Dai Qing-yao, Jiang Chuan
OH - Ji Dao-shuai, Xia Run-tao, Liu Li-bin, Zhang Chen
MB - Zhang Zhe-jia, Chen Long-hai, Geng Xin
    L - Ren Qi

    female NT:
S - Ding Xia, Yao Di
    OP - Gong Xiang-yu, Zhang Chang-ning
OH - Hui Ruo-qi, Zhu Ting, Liu Xiao-tong, Li Jing
MB - Yuan Xin-yue, Yan Ni, Xu Yun-li
    L - Lin Li

My avatar is Jiang Chuan. I hope more persons love him.

  • Things are not looking good for Yao Di and Li Jing who have been with the B team since 2014. Yao still has a chance because Wei is aging with 2 bummed knees so there's a need for a replacement setter for 2020. Li Jing, on the other hand, can't even compete with Liu Xiaotong, 4th choice for OHs. She is in big trouble of getting dumped all together. The young MBs look promising to create a new and young Great Wall. I hope to see the young players get more chances in the upcoming WGP.

  • I just re-watched the 2016.07.31 AVC U19 Championship JPN v CHN game because I can't get enough of WU Han.

She is a beastling. I wish they would have tried her out in the Montreux games. Must be tough to be a young Chinese attacker when a few of the best players in the world are in front of you and they are in their early twenties. :wall:

Yup, better to give chance to groom WU Han (born 1998, 183 cm, wing spiker, Club: Jiangsu), she's still young, more promising than LI Jing (born 1991, 186 cm, Zhejiang). I think LI Jing is already maxed out, hard to improve further, watching her plays in the last two years, no progress, she's good at the continental level but not up to the top level competition. The other young player, the quiet QIAN Jing-wen also has more potential than LI imo. As well as the young MB, GAO Yi and WANG Yuan-yuan are worth to be given more international competition exposure, I hope these young players (Qian, Gao, Wang) will gain some playing time at the 2017 WGP.

Well, I hope DIAO Lin-yu was not seriously injured and is able to join at this WGP.

Update: upon relooking at just the WGP 2017 Wide Roster of the CHN team, I think it's pretty tough for WU Han to make an inroad into non-age bracket team in near future, if ever, there are just many players with possibly better bet at this position: LIU Yan-han; WANG Yun-lu; QIAN Jing-wen; LI Ying-ying... in addition to those sure choices. Yes, tough life to exist at the same era... :pinch::whistling:

None of these players are better than Liu Xiaotong so Wu Han still has a chance if she proves exceptional. Her disadvantage is height since coaches like taller players. I think Wang Yunlu is not better than Li Jing. She is tall with a serve but that's about it. The best OHs lineup is still Zhu, Zhang, Hui, and Liu X.

  • Bold as the players who participated in 2016 U19 ACH:
    S - Cai Ya-qian, Sun Yan
    OP - Chen Pei-yan, Guan Rui-ge
OH - Wu Han, Han Wen-ya, Yang Wen-jin [born in 1997]
MB - Xie Xing, Zhang Yu-qian, Yang Han-yu
    L - Zang Qian-qian, Fang Jing

Yang Wen-jin replaced Cai Xiao-qing temporarily.

Rumor: Team Brazil and Team Russia are also U20 NTs.

    Schedule [UTC+8]:
    June 17 10:30 Russia - South Africa 14:30 China - India
    June 18 15:30 Brazil - South Africa 19:30 China - Russia
    June 19 15:30 Russia - Brazil 19:30 South - India

I have watched the 2016.09.11 AVC Club Championship Final (NEC Red Rockets) JPN v (Bayi Shenzhen) CHN game about 20 times and it was pretty much Wang Yunlu who gave the match to the Red Rockets. Thank you Yunlu! So it's going to be a while before I think she is much good. Still very young, though. It's crazy how young some of the Chinese players are. LI Ying-ying is 17?

  • the WGP 2017 Wide Roster of the CHN team,

On that page, and others like it, for each player there is a "Selection" number. What does that mean?

BTW - I'm re-watching some of the Chinese Montreux matches and gaining much appreciation for the setter, Diao, and Gao Yi especially. I've always thought Gong was pretty solid but wish she would up her attitude. I can admire skill but can't root for downbeat personality. Doubly so when it comes to coaches.

The selection number is incorrect for pretty much every player. It's like apps (appearances) for footballers, amount of games play for national team. I like Diao more than Yao. Gao Yi has really long arms. She just needs to work on timing and technique to block better spikers.

Gong XY should not be judged from the Montreux VM, the Chinese squad was a limp one, for trying out the young players like Gao Yi, Wang YY while hosting the lesser veteran like Li Jing etc.. Gong along with Liu XT were not sufficient to prop the entire team [in dealing with the formidable opponent like BRA squad]... but it's so true that the main purpose of a tournament like Montreux VM is just worth for such experimentation, no more and no less! I have no wonder that a team like that Chinese composition couldn't match the fierce BRA team there.

Any meaningful judgement must be deferred until at least the WGP 2017, though World Championship is a more accurate barometer. I hope BRA team will even field a more complete, stronger team in the WGP 2017. I'd like to see a post-Olympics encounter of more realistic strength, much closer to the actual power possessed by both teams, but this time they can only be seeing eyes to eyes in the Final Six round. Whereas the stake is more important, the true power is getting more real.

I agree. I did think a lot of the Montreux matches were fun--still re-watching some of them. And I think Gong performed well, very well. Still surprised she's so young.

DIAO Lin-yu's ankle incident looked a lot worse the second time. And she did it on her own, didn't land on anyone else's foot, as far as I could tell. Sad for her.
