Chinese NT 2017

  • Does someone have any news about Zhu Ting? I saw this from my facebook notification but there is no detail about this picture.

    https://www.facebook.com/volle…339107139/?type=3&theater

The picture was from last season showing Zhu with altitude sickness while playing in Yunnan. This time she had the same problem in 1st game of national games last chance qualification. She was later hospitalized and didnt play the next 2 games as a precaution. Her teammate also suffered the same problem in game 3.

  • Not to but temporarily stir the pot again but I take exception when someone says that Hui Ruoqi is average. I'm less of a volleyball fan than plenty here but I am an avid general sports fan, in some sense I have to be or I wouldn't be able to perform my job.
I am a huge Hui Ruoqi fan. I remember the first time I saw Hui play for the NT was in 2009 and I said to myself if this girl bulks she will change Chinese volleyball, lead it into a new era. She didn't, but she still maintains all the prowess she once showed many years ago. Her hang time especially is absolutely incredible. Her reflex, length, and raw range are also incredible. She is a physical freak in every sense of the word, by every sense of the term physical freak.
Jenny Lang Ping gets far too much credit for winning the Olympic gold, not that she isn't a good and qualified coach but the cards she had were immaculate. I picked Team China to win going in, perhaps it was a bit of a homer vote, but I did it because the majority of the athletes on the Chinese side were so physically gifted. A real "freak show", the only team potentially matching being the US. Other teams really couldn't compare.
Often times after a big win it's easy to assume things are always going to be good, and to overrate new, incoming talent vs. the existing pieces. The world and the Chinese volleyball community will be searching for the next Zhu Ting over the next few years but the reality is that freaks are rare, hence why they are called freaks in the first place. Other times, freaks don't reach their assumed potential due to deficiencies in other aspects of their games. I follow the youth some and I am impressed by the sensations like Li YingYing but physically I don't think her ceiling is above Hui. Eventually a replacement comes, I certainly hope, but I wouldn't look at the current pool and assume that what is newer is thereby better. As for some of the mentioned potential existing veteran replacements, no...just no...that's not a path worth retreading.
So I sincerely hope that this exit from the National Team is temporary. There are athletes who legitimately will need to be replaced over the next cycle like Yan Ni and perhaps Xu Yunli as well.
As for youths. Li YingYing is obviously promising. She has good versatility but is physically limited (speaking comparatively), she will work into a role off the bench. Yi Gao, I really don't prefer her. Wang YuanYuan I like slightly more, and the emphasis is on the word slightly. I would be somewhat interested to see more of Yang Hanyu, but in the games I've seen the coaches haven't shared this interest. Peiyan Chen looks like she might be interesting on paper, but what's on the paper does not always translate to the floor so that will be something to watch. Someone I want to see more of is Sun Yan. I am very intrigued.

  • In fact, I am very worried about the result of this U20 NT due to lack of players [injuries, the "conflict" against the National Games, the short MBs without better spikes, the conflict against the senior NT [Gao Yi and Qian Jing-wen] and so on]
S - Cai Ya-qian, Sun Yan, Xu Xiao-ting (Shanghai Junior recalled her)
OP - Chen Pei-yan, Qian Jing-wen (in the senior NT), Guan Rui-ge, Ou-yang Qian-qian (Bayi Junior recalled her)

MB - Gao Yi (in the senior NT), Yang Han-yu, Zhang Yu-qian, Xie Xing, Li Ya-nan

  • The 8th to 13th place finals of 13th Chinese National Games has ended.
Zhu Ting, Yuan Xin-yue and Ding Xia will go to Beilun District, Ningbo and join the training camp of the senior NT on June 22.
Other players in the wide roster such as Liu Yan-han couldn't take part in WGP2017 only when some players of the training camp have to leave for some reasons.

PS: Li Ying-ying as the youngest player of the senior NT this year has arrived in Beilun District.

  • Good for her. She's got a long way to go physically, her vert needs to be 312 minimum and she needs to bulk but I like that she has a good serve and good defensive capabilities. Hopefully she can upgrade Yang Fangxu and Liu XiaoTong by 2020.

  • Sorry, the news that Li Ying-ying has joined the training camp of the senior NT this year is false now at least.
Zhu Ting will join it next week after some commercial activities.

The roster of the training camp of the senior NT now:
S - Ding Xia, Yao Di (Diao Lin-yu has a rest due to her injury)
    OP - Gong Xiang-yu, Qian Jing-wen
OH - Zhang Chang-ning, Liu Xiao-tong, Li Jing, Wang Yun-lu
MB - Yuan Xin-yue, Gao Yi, Wang Yuan-yuan, Zheng Yi-xin
    L - Lin Li, Wang Meng-jie

They might be the players of Week 1 of WGP2017 but not sure.

  • Mmh yeah, I don't really agree with the cuts. Maybe they're sending Li Yingying to the U20 or something if there's still time. The Grand Prix isn't a must win though so I'd like to see more talent and more projectable athletes there. Wang Yunlu...is young so you don't want to count her out just yet...but I won't be holding my breath either. Li Jing is fine just as a good local league player, a fan favorite for some, or against really weak international teams, but it is pretty apparent she doesn't have what it takes for that next level of volleyball. A chance to break in talented youth to me is worth more than winning tournaments per say.

  • Wang Yunlu is a waste of time. She is bad at every level, club or national, and getting worse each year. I think it is Li Jing's last chance to prove she is worth keeping. Not impressive since 2014 playing for NT. Too bad for Diao getting injured at the wrong time. She has a chance to replace Yao but will have to wait longer. As for Li Yingying, I think she is just there as replacement in case some players get injured. She hasn't been part of any team since 2015 Girls Championship. Hopefully we get to see her play for senior team to see what she is capable of.

  • what happened to liu yanhan? she was a good prospect

Her team missed out qualifying for National Games and is now resting. No training even though her name is on the WGP wide roster. She is probably not 100% healthy due to injury. Also heard she's trying to play opposite. I think she is just a lesser version of Liu Xiaotong, nothing outstanding but makes a good backup.

  • Xiaotong seems more consistent to me than Yanhan, and maybe a little better on defense, and she has a better court presence, but when Yanhan's offensive game is on she seems much better. I think they should both take a rest to make room for Wu Han :)

  • Qian Jingwen, Wu Han, Li Yingying, and Gao Yi were part of the 2015 girls team. So far Qian and Gao have made it to senior team. I think Wu Han will get her chance because she has more upside than Qian. Gao Yi was a bench warmer but exceeded her peers from the girls team.

  • I wish I didn't have to be the guy on this board always asking for explanations, but ....

When you say the "girls team", and wikipedia and FIVB seem to inconsistently refer to "Junior" leagues/teams, what exactly are we talking about?

There are these competitions this year:

2017 Asian U18 Girls' Championship (previous was 2014 Asian Girls' Under 17-wtf Championship)
2017 Asian U23 Womens' Championship (China doesn't seem to have a dog in that fight)
2017 FIVB U20 Womens' World Championship
2017 FIVB U18 Girls' World Championship
2017 FIVB U23 Womens' World Championship

I discovered Wu Han in the 2016 Asian Under 19-wtf Women's Championship

It appears that the AVC tournaments are just in their 2nd or 3rd edition, and the FIVB U23 is newish. Is the AVC planning on an U20?

Do you have to be over 20 to play on the U23? Qian Jingwen, Wu Han, and Gao Yi are playing on the U20 team next month in Mexico for the FIVB U20 Womens' World Championship. Is that the important one for China, the U20 team, you refer to as the 'girls' team? I'll assume that the U20 is for the promising up-and-comers and the U23 (if China has one) is for the ones who were up but didn't come to the Senior team? Can/do some girls play on both teams (if eligible)?

Maybe China doesn't indulge the U23 thing? It's all or nothing until you can legally drink? And these girls also play on Club teams.

It's probably different all over the world, and my main interest is Japan, but China keeps knockin on the door. Maybe you can't speak to the Japanese system.

It was a surprise to me to learn the USA doesn't have club teams. I don't really care but my gosh, this is a complicated sport (especially for me since I can't read Chinese or Japanese, and Google translate is only so good).

As a side note, when I look at English Wikipedia pages for Thailand volleyball, they're comprehensive with regards to squads and tournament histories, more or less. I wish a Chinese and a Japanese and a Korean person would do the same for their respective country's pages. :teach: Actually I haven't looked much at the Korean pages.

  • When I say girls team, I am referring to the U18 team. In this case, I am talking about the players from the 2015 Girls U18 World Championship. I think for U23 teams, any player under 23 is eligible to play.

As far as I know for Chinese players, once you have played for the senior team, you no longer play for any junior team competitions. So Qian Jingwen and Gao Yi most likely won't be playing the U20 Word Championship. I have not seen any players that have played for any senior competition play in U tournaments.

I think all U competitions are important for China because they want to develop as many young and good players for the senior team since a lot of Chinese players retire early, mostly due to injuries. Lang Ping found Zhu Ting in 2013, Yuan Xinyue in 2014, Zhang Changning in 2015, and Gong Xiangyu in 2016, all under 23 and won gold together in Rio. They can at least play another 1-2 Olympic cycles if healthy. I am waiting for Zhu Ting's little sister to be her successor haha.

  • thai players played in u23 even if they already played in the seniors. ajcharaporn, pimpichaya, pornpun, and chatchu-on mainly
