Germany - VBL 1. Bundesliga 2017/2018

  • Probably due to official source following teams will be on board, essentially the very same as last time without Köpenick:

    1. SSC Palmberg Schwerin
    2. Allianz MTV Stuttgart
    3. Dresdner SC
    4. SC Potsdam
    5. VC Wiesbaden
    6. Rote Raben Vilsbiburg
    7. USC Münster
    8. Ladies in Black Aachen
    9. VfB Suhl LOTTO Thüringen (Thuringia)
    10. Schwarz-Weiß Erfurt (pleading successfully for free slot in 1. league)
    11. VC Olympia Berlin (special permission by federation DVV and VBL)

volleyball magazine official VBL statement first league license applicants

As of 31. May 2017 Köpenick announced getting out of first league - not using license for this season due to financial reasons.

  • A few remarks: Köpenick is not 100% sure regarding financial state, but they think they should finish it positively.

VCO Berlin will play with new, much younger roster, so it is questionable, if this will not result in losing all sets clearly like two years ago against the professional teams.

Erfurt has both the financial state and an adequate, rule conforming hall, so they should be accepted by VBL, because even with them there are just 11 professional teams (VCO is not counting into this league size) like before, while 12 is the officially (rules book) desired number.

From second league none of the altogether three eligible teams had the financial resources to request a first league license (Leverkusen from North, Offenburg and Straubing from South).

Opposed to men's league there were no wildcard applicants at all (for example with Lohhof one could think of such a trial, but they also found not the money to do so).

  • Valerie Nichol is very popular in Stuttgart, especially among young volleyball playing girls as a very skilled setter. But reality is, that there is internationally a high demand for good setters and there are many clubs out there with considerable higher budgets than us, especially other than in German league.

Yes, I suppose she will receive many different offers, she did really good job in Sttugart.
