I don’t think the worst performance Pankova ever played in NT could be so much worse than how Startseva recently has been doing. Goncharova is now at the age of 30, she can’t hit as many ball as she did years ago and now I already see that she easily gets exhausted, Russia need some help no matter what. Voronkova has been quite inconsistent, Parubets being busy with reception, Kurilo is not someone that can help in attack, that basically leaves Kosheleva, but it’s complicating with Pankov as head coach. Well, what to do if one of those eventually should leave, I’m guessing it’s not so difficult to decide who to take for the bigger picture.

volleyball level has dropped significantly because of the new clearly lazy generation though it seems its slowly rising again

btw - Sokolova is still playing today, isn't she? I saw her recently, maybe it was last year. She looked the same as 15 years ago.
She retired at some point but then came back. I think she`s retired for good now. As far as I know last tournament she played with the NT was Champions Cup 2013.

Wow, I skipped around to the end of each set and then watched all the 5th. That's some good volleyball. I think the high sets are there for the benefit of the announcers so they'd have more time to get in their long-winded platitudes about hard work and sweat and all that Olympic Stuff they say about players in every sport.

I think you are referring to Natalya Mammadova (UKR) (AZE) OH and the tournament you saw her in must have been World Club Championship when she took part for the Kazakh team!
Also a fabulous player of course even if she's not a Sokolova.

For me, Athens 2004 was one of the best Olympics of the lasr 20 years. So many top teams and with so many different styles (cuban 4-2, russian high balls, brazilian, chinese, italian, japanese and so on on). And the level of serves was just in the point. As well as so many good OH2. Now, they are a endangered species.

And at the end I was thinking exactly that, about how different volleyball was and how many (or all) NT had an unique identity and singular style but now basically all the volleyball in the world are played in the same way or with some basic variations... It was such good times :')And not only good OH2, but MB who COULD DO RECEPTION!!!

the CUB MBs (barros, carrillo) not only received serve, they also attacked from back row.
CHN MB (liu yanan) would sub in as reception specialist.
and of course, danni scott could do it all.
(also DOM upset USA in the first round. incredibly 2 of them, valdez & rivera, are still with the NT.)
sitenoise, i wasn’t following VB back then either but i watched whatever i could find on YT, so now i know that history. traumatic times for BRA though (specially poor, young mari).
