Italy – Superlega 2017/2018

  • Even few Trento players used to him and winners thanks to him (also important ones, like Lanza and Colaci apparently, plus Djuric) after a while had enough of him and were ready to leave the team. At the end Trento decide it was time to change Stoytchev, so imho that's a clear sign he is a 'difficult' coach for the players.

But, if only few months – and definitely decent results – were needed to broke to the relationship between him and the players that shows something is going wrong.

But what is the real problem? The vision of the game, too structured (and collective) and too less creative (and individualistic)?
The human relationship with the players? The fact he is more straight about what happens outside court?

  • With all my respect; I hate when volleyball teams are performing a theater movie instead of volleyball like Modena did at the first set.

I'm interested in sportsbooks so I watch dozens of matches in a month with different kinds of sport branches and I understand it when I see a theater movie.

  • Stern is just a reserve by Djuric in Verona and Gasparini in Slovenia? Hard to believe it. He could start anywhere in any club or country in my opinion.

His serve saved Verona from a humiliation.

  • Andric is very popular in Perugia(fangirls literally surrounded him the other day :rolll: ) despite just being a reserve for Atanasijevic. I'm quite glad he's backing that up with his performance in this set.

  • Nice to see Manavi play bigger minutes. Grbic only lets him significantly play against weak teams. Maar is looking dull this past few weeks. It is always great to have a deep bench and Verona is certainly one of the teams that has that even without Djuric.

  • 10 aces in 4 sets for Ngapeth :what: :what:

12 at the end, absolute record for Superlega (last record: Gasparini with 11 aces, 2011). And the last Ngapeth ace was the last point of the match, nice!

About Trento, I've seen the match this afternoon. I didn't expect us to play that well and practically dominate Padova. I'm sure Padova has his demerits, but I think we expressed a good game, also considering Giannelli was playing with a fever (and skipped the last training) and Hoag had back problems (and Kovacevic was off for abdominal problems, he just entered briefly in second line – and did a very good dig, for the record). Eder deserved MVP; Zingel and Vettori on the bench, well subbed with Kozamenrick and Teppan.
First first set won at home in the Regular Season, and first time we grab the 4th place. Even if Verona, the 5th, has a match less, the third place is far away, and many teams are very close behind us, it's a good feeling to be there ;)

  • Nicholas Hoag is the MVP of Superlega for December 2017/18 season.

So when Kovacevic returns... losing Vettori as titular now that Teppan is seemingly the first option as oppoosite. We have Lanza/Hoag/Kovacevic- Vettori/Teppan vying for the positions left in the club. Tough choices for Lorenzetti.

For the MBs. Lorenzetti is going full-servbot mode. Zingel's serve is just not that strong. Eder/Kozamernik provides some pressure and that helps a lot in blocking better. I think that's a great choice for now.

Chiappa/De Pandis. I wish Latina and Trento makes a swap for Shoji and De Pandis. I think that would fix some of their problems. Shoji better than De Pandis and with De Pandis for Latina... probably they can have Ishikawa to play more.

True, it would be great for Trento, but for Latina I think they don't have foreigns problem: the setter, one MB and one OH are enough Italians.

Yes, Lorenzetti is forced to use Lanza if Teppan is on court, so let's hope Vettori will get better because having Hoag/Kovacevic on the bench in case Lanza won't play well only because of the foreign rule would be a pity.

He also did quite well vs Milano when he got in, so he deserved a chance as titular. Plus, yes, when you have only one float server on your team, it better be a good one ;)

  • Seriously I think who gives Christenson these MVP awards wants to destabilize Lube .Today he is playing some experimental volleyball by only setting to MBs and Kovar and ignoring his 2 best options Juantorena and Sokolov. Guess what they are losing the set

  • De Pandis has a knee problem so that's why Chiappa is playing also in reception, but he is doing quite good except with some balls that touched the net and he couldn't correct his prediction of the trajectory.

Trento didn't play very well the second set, starting 1-6 for Ravenna (as it happened in the last three matches at home, 7-0 in the second set for Monza and Padova...), then got to -3, then again 10-18 with Pogjalen serving. They finally started playing again with Zingel for Kozamenrick that worked very well, Uros for Hoag, Vettori for Teppan. Lanza was great, he put down amazing ball and had a very nice serve run that at the end drove Trento to 22-24 (then 22-25). Also good job of Zingel in attack and block and good digs by Uros. Vettori served well.

Now Trento with the first set line up.

  • De Cecco and his MBs are having problems connecting the attacks. Atanasijevic is not having a good match too and De Cecco still gives the ball to him. I honestly I'm at loss with De Cecco right now. The pattern is very visible and that gave Piacenza an opportunity to counter.

The Slide/Back Quick to Anzani pleased me in a funny way though. That was an awkward attack. :rolll:

Edited once, last by Rains_of_Castamere ().

  • Probably questionable decisions (on both side) by the referees in Trento-Ravenna...
First a ball apparently saved by Trento with a lucky foot touch wasn't given, then it was call a borderline 'accompagnata' fault to Diamantini (during a set), and after Ravenna complains due to this call, the referee gave directly 2 red cards to Ravenna (so two point to Trento, so from 14-16 to 17-16 counting also the point for the set fault).
Probably also in the first set there was a bad call vs Trento, with Chiappa saving a ball that the referee considered on the floor.

    Kovacevic playing as receiving opposite.

Nice serve run by Kozamenrick yet again.

  • If Perugia is not careful...this could go to a tie-break.

  • Piacenza desperately needs a good receiving libero .

Zaytsev should be the MVP of the match. Great attack on 4 and the pipe again. Improved passing too.

  • Really wonderful tie break imho between Monza and Modena, such a pity (from a Trento fan point of view :P) that Monza didn't win it!

Modena was without Sabbi and Holt.
Sabbi has a shoulder injury, I didn't understand how serious, and Argenta started to play, but Van Gardener did quite better for what I catch while watching Trento.
Holt has a flue (but imho he was replace quite well by Mazzone and Bossi).

On the other hand, I'm very worried that Vettori wasn't considering even if Teppan was performing quite mediocrely...
Will he ever start playing better this season? :S

  • 2 red cards to Ravenna (so two point to Trento, so from 14-16 to 17-16 counting also the point for the set fault).

Sorry, it was 15-16, and became 17-16 because of the set fault and the red card.
In addiction to the direct red card to (I think) Marechal, there were also also a red+yellow card for Marechal, so expulsion until the end of the set (but this doesn't give point to the opponents, unlike the single red card).
I don't know what Marechal said but it seemed all a bit too exaggerated, including the call on the set...
