  • Is it true? An article said Gao Yi replaced an injured Wang Yuanyuan hours before the finals.

Yup, I saw Gao Yi was around during the breaks, fed water etc, surprised to see her, dunno she's around... so your info should be true that she replaced Wang Yuanyuan at the last minutes. No other explanation of seeing Gao Yi around.

EDIT: a quick search around Baidu.com, Sohu Sportshas some news piece today about Gao Yi replaced Wang Yuanyuan due to Wang's possibly some knee injury (the specifics wasn't mentioned by the authoritative party). It seems decision was made yesterday.

Eastday Sports today has clearer info, the replacement was announced today 6 hours before the match. Gao Yi is one year younger (born 1998 ) than Wang Yuanyuan and 1cm shorter at 1.94m.

Then losing one attacking/blocking power??? Nope, impossible, that is never the playing style or strategy of the Chinese squad. Fielding two Liberos concurrently may be opted by some other team, but not the Chinese one!! Moreover, unlike some other team, the Chinese liberos are far from tall... cannot see the Chinese team playing the Japanese style :)

  • I wonder if Lang Ping will give more playing time to the bench players like Li Yingying, Gao Yi, Yang Fangxu, Hu Mingyuan incl. Diao Linyu against BRA tomorrow since the two already secured their SF. Will top the group give any clear advantage? I tend to give the bench the high quality match to experience thus they may be more ready when being called for the next duty. It really does not matter for the Chinese squad which one to face in the SF, be it SRB, TUR or USA.. Imo they all have the comparable quality, equally tough opponent.

Btw who's the female commentator? Sound like a Dutch supporter speaking there, and her commentating weren't apt or intelligent many times ; the male one was okay, he did his job more professionally.

I don't see how that will help China. They need a backrow specialist who could handle reception especially when Zhu is in the backrow. China can't even use the slide and the wing spikers can't kill any ball.

In the past... Lang Ping used Sykora to play DS when she was still coaching USA. Considering the limitations of this chinese roster. I think a libero in a regular uniform shouldn't be a faraway thought.

  • Only know Asian Games, Asian Cup, and Montreux.

Hoping to see some improvement in these competitions, especially in reception. I'm guessing we might see Sun Haiping on the roster since she was training with the team in Beijing. Also hope Yang Fangxu will not return. China should start focusing on Gong Xiangyu and maybe even another backup opposite in the meantime.

Will Zhang Changnings return be close to WCH?

  • Zhang Changning played in the friendly against Serbia so she will return. It's just a matter of which tournament because she will need to get the rust off.

Yang Fangxu has been with the team even if she wasn't getting playing time. I think she is done based on what I've seen during this VNL campaign.

China needs better scorers to take the burden off Zhu. Zhang will help when she gets back. I think Li Yingying will get better. Maybe China will send full squad for Asian Games. As long as everyone is healthy, things will be better.

China missed only one WGP final but only managed to win one away, while hosting 13 times, including Macau and Hong Kong. So it is not a good indicator of how China will perform in the quad events. I think the trend will continue in the VNL. Hopefully the team will improve from their weaknesses for WCH because China is in a very tough group.

  • What is the difference between Asian games and Asian Cup? Which one is more prestigious?

Full disclosure: I don't know but I'm responding anyway :D

The Asian Games is a multi sport event, like an Asian Olympics, so there's a lot more media exposure (I imagine). And it's every four years. People seem to equate that with prestige!

The Asian Cup, bi-annually, seems to be a tournament devised to bring exposure and experience to Asian countries that aren't named China, Japan, or Korea. So, good for that. It doesn't have the cache that the Asian Championship has. Let's call it "B Tournament". :P

Neither of them have prestige outside Asia. In Asia, I bet the Asian Games have a lot more bragging rights.

  • Actually Asian Championship is the most prestigious. Korea women's team has yet to win it.

  • Zhang Changning is very much needed on the team in order to help relieve pressure off of Zhu, Liu Xiaotong just wasn't enough which is what I kinda expected. They need a defensive outside hitter like what Hui Ruoqi provided when she covered Zhu in the back court.

I thought Li Yingying played very well against USA, definetly gave a spark coming off the bench. She just needs to be more consistent and also work on her other weak areas, reception, block, etc. Hopefully the American trainer will work with her to improve her overall strength and movement. Zhu Tings body went through changes as she got physically stronger from the WGP 2013 to Rio 2016.

Health is most important. Verteran Yan Ni is very much a core player for China that none of the new middle blockers can replace as of right now based on their performances.

  • Yes health is the major factor for this team's predicament. Losing three veterans because of health put this team in a big hole, primarily receiving (Hui), setting (Wei), and blocking (Xu). None of the new players could fill the gap thus far.

I think Xu Yunli is the only unconfirmed player that hasn't announced retirement. Too bad she got screwed by her stupid coach that led to her serious injury during a meaningless game at National Games. She is still the best MB that can block and score for China. New MB prospects have been disappointing. Yan Ni is more of a backup MB so not expecting much from her especially of her age and health.

I still think the core of this team is Zhu-Yuan-Zhang. As long as they are healthy, China has a chance to win even if struggling to do so. Li Yingying will get better when she gets playing time. She improved tremendously from her junior days. I expect the same with better training and playing against better competition. Liu Xiaotong is a spark plug off the bench so no expectation for her being a starter to fill Zhang's role.

Biggest question mark is OP. How will Gong play in 3 months time? She is too inconsistent. How will Zeng's health be? Lang Ping is limiting her playing so far to prevent injuries. I hope someone new will have a breakthrough in 3 months time. Maybe Wu Han can show up like Gong did in 2016. Wishful thinking.
