  • The thing is, if organizations favor a certain continent to have more representatives because that certain continent have better players, it kills the development of the said sport in continents where that specific sport is underveloped or still progressing.

I don't thing your argument is valid. Africa always get a spot and they have been at the same level for ages.

Agree; Polish TV commentators said (i didn't check it) that Tunisia has been participating 6 times in OG within last 30 years and within this time they won only one set. So for me diversity are senseless. During Olympic cycle there are many world competition to show up your possibilities than to go to Olympics and be killed in each match. Women's OG tournament will have 8 strong (best world) teams while male is in much worse situation because only 6 will be worlds top.

  • Actually having weak teams in OG or WCH is killing the sport because nobody wants to watch any team beat african teams 3-0 lol And it's even worse in WCH where 1/3 of the tournament are random teams unable to win a set.

If e.g. Tunisia has been to OG so many times why they should develop more? They won't get to the level of european teams anyway so development for them seems to be useless.

  • This is argument is ridiculous about weak teams being in the tournament. You are limited to 12 teams period. If the IOC is dictating that 5 come from each continental federation at minimum, the FIVB are just following the rules. Right now each federation has at least one team except Africa. You could have an Africa only tournament and then replay the world groups with new ranking. Would this be better, probably and yes the better teams would likely get in?

I think Africans want (and deserve) to see their teams in OG

  • OG is the biggest sport evet and as such is the right place for the further development of the sport. As a volleyball fan, it would certainly makes me happy that many nations play high-level volleyball. Stronger competition will lead to popularization, increased credibility among sport, more widespread investment,.....OFC that is the downside is the complete commercialization of the sport(like football,NBA,....)but surely i will enjoy in uncertain mathces. And finaly logo of the OG saying that that is competition of 5 different continents, it's doesn't say anywhere that is competition of 12 best teams in the World. At the end of the story the best ones in that moment always played OG. OG is special cometitio and do not needs to be changed. Already exist one Wolrd Championship. OG need to be OG.

  • I think Africans want (and deserve) to see their teams in OG

And what is Africa doing to support volleyball?

Turkey is paying millions for volleyball players, don`t you think they want to see their team in the Olympics?

I`m pretty sure if Brazil was not competing in the OG, volleyball would not be so popular in Brazil and it would be a lot harder to have volleyball clubs around the country. This is exactly what happened with Basketball.

what if Turkish Clubs decide to shut down because it is not worth to keep investing since Turkey never gets to the Olympics and the sport is not growing and there`s not enough fans to keep it going? Hundreds of players will be without a job. What if Poland decides to do the same? Germany? and so on.

So yeah.....let`s reward the countries that are doing nothing to support our sport.....and let`s do nothing to help the ones that are supporting it.

  • You're making a different argument here. sloth was responding to the notion that "nobody" was a little broad

  • I'm not really sure what case you are trying to make by asking what the poorest continent in the world is doing to support volleyball. Is that supposed to be rhetorical?

They have a governing body for it. That, to me atleast, indicates that they also value the sports of volleyball in that region. That counts for something right?

Visibility and lack of funds are probably the reason why no country from that confederation has seen any success on the international stage. It would effectively kill the sports in that region if we exclude them from the games.

I know it's extremely frustrating to not be able to see the very best compete in the Olympics. But we also have to consider why this version of the Olympics exists in the first place. Right front and center...it's in the flag and completely excluding a representative from Africa essentially means the committee has failed to uphold it's most important creed.

  • To be honest, I think that most of those unhappy with the current qualification system is that teams such as Argentina/Thailand/Korea have an easier path than Turkey/Netherlands/Germany/Poland even though the latter are likely to beat the former. Africa is only ONE out of the 12 tickets.

  • Yes, as long Olympia is not willing to accept 16 instead 12 teams, they should at least play continental qualification before world qualification, so that Argentina and DomRep have to fight with European teams for a slot instead of easily getting a berth in the wake of Brazil and USA.

  • Why are people so obsessed with the Olympic flag. If that matters so much to you, are you also supporting to have one team from Oceania in every OG? Or having a qualification tournament with south& north America combined? Because that's what the flag represent!

  • Honestly nobody's forcing you to watch OGs, you don't like it, don watch, nobody cares.

The best teams will always be there. You either get stronger or move to another continent, stop whining about it every day.

I really hope when Istanbul finally gets to host OGs, Turkey doesn't qualify automatically and then fails to qualify, how poetic:drink:

  • I agree with StefanS   serdar and pope

Many people are super obsessed with the OG logo yet they are also being very hypocritical and use it only if it fits their agenda

Once again, 99% of all of us here agree that all continents should take part,

Many people here have clearly never attended a sport or have no idea how business in sports work, no a country is not suddenly going to be better just because they attended a world class event, and this has been proven many times. A country simply has to be willing to invest (money, good training, good schools, high level matches, good coaches, look for a wide pool of players etc.) so they can start improving their leagues and youth selections, all OG does is being a month of decent promotion. There is many countries in the world where a certain sport is really popular, yet they are still nowhere near good compared to other countries.

What I don't get is why anyone would still disagree with continental qualification before, world qualification as StefanS said, it would Iiterally be the most fair system.

pope s point is super valid. Many people talk about how their argument is: "volleyball should grow" but volleyball is already not very popular, it's not like we have to privilige of football and basketball so we can start making it even more worldwide when there is barely 1 country even where its the most popular sport. Now if Turkey would stop investing surely it would quite a bit problematic for high level volleyball and I imagine with so little high level clubs (paying not much) many girls would even stop pursuing volleyball as their job making the level even worse, the same goes for Poland on a lesser scale.

  • Honestly nobody's forcing you to watch OGs, you don't like it, don watch, nobody cares.

No! Nobody said we don't like Olympics. This is a forum, the whole point is to argue about what you do and don't like and discuss, not to impose your views on others and move on. Actually if you don't like that you can sign off :wavy:

And btw the best teams will always be there? Netherlands was 4th in OG and have a high chance of not even making it.
