Squads

Held in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan from 11 to 18 July 2018. The tournament will serve as the Asian qualifiers for the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship with the champion qualifying for the World Championship.

I walked into a Goodwill Shop here in San Francisco yesterday and there was an NEC visor hanging out there amongst the baseball caps. How weird. I bought it for a dollar. I figured it was some kind of sign and I'd wear it for the NEC games to, you know, cheer them on. But the games are on here at 2:00am! Maybe I'll sleep with it on

My visor worked! Epic comeback by NEC. Substituting Aratani for Yamauchi laid the groundwork, which makes me a little sad because I like them both and think they're both important. Yamauchi had some good kills but Aratani's defense was better. I guess using them as a tag-team is okay. I didn't think Hirose played well but she ended up high scorer with 23 (3 aces (w/6 faults, tho)). She improved as the game went on. Yanagita had 18 pts and did very well as a main receiver (that's new!). The new MB, 18 y/old, 183cm, Nichika Yamada looked really good, and gigantic (for a Japanese). She had only 9 points in 5 sets (1 kill), but she looks smart, comfortable and confident with a quick and powerful swing. She had a number of good blocks (16) that didn't result in kills. I am already a big fan! My nemesis, Kaori Ueno, had 11 pts (2 blocks). I'll try to support her this year (but damn, NEC doesn't need MBs, they need to land one of the fabulous liberos on the free market).

It's great that whenever Thailand plays you can count on HD streams of the game showing up. The links to the first four sets are 1080p, 50 fps lovely. That uploader hasn't posted set 5 so I plugged in a Russian stream (I will update the link if this changes).

Pleumjit didn't play. Ajcharaporn only played the first two sets, which Thailand won. Fatou Niana Diouck was high scorer with 14. Nootsara played only the first set. Chatchu-on subbed here and there.

Seems like Tomkom, Pleumjit, Chatchu-on, Ajcharaporn and a couple other Thai players play volleyball 365 days a year. Although NEC picked up their game as the match went on, Thailand's game went downhill and errors mounted. Tired much?

Sadly, I think that is their only match I'll probably get to see unless they meet Thailand in the Final Round. It seems Thailand is the only country with reasonable enough copyright issues and the gloriously enthusiastic fans to allow for broadcasting and uploading the matches.

That Russian/Ukrainian site might live stream some in poor quality, but staying up for a match which starts at 2:00am is probably not going to happen too often.

I haven't watched anything yet but I'm a little surprised NEC had a rough time with the depleted Jiangsu squad.

I don't understand how this thing is ranked or scored or moves forward. It seems like everybody wins!

Formatting is a whole new ball game now I'm done wrestling with it for now

Haven't watched the THA match yet.

A goofy ending to the NEC v Altay match. At 24-24 NEC scored off the block. Clearly. But there was a challenge. Looked like the Altay Coach called for it but the scorebug said NEC. Clearly Altay groped the net. Then match point saw both sides sort of prematurely celebrate before finding the ball coming back to them still in play, until Yanagita scored a pretty clear attack for the match. But NEC looked a little guilty. After minutes of confusion, while the NEC Coach is laughing the whole time, Altay swapped out its libero and got ready to serve. But then they instructed NEC to serve so they must have called a let (is that what two thumbs up by the ref means?). Scoreboard stayed at 25-24.

Altay scores the next point. 25-25.

Looked like NEC scored next but they gave it to KAZ. 25-26. NEC Challenged. They didn't show a replay but showed the NEC bench celebrate. Scoreboard goes to 26-26. Oops.

KAZ scores next 26-27. Huh?

KAZ serves out of bounds. 27-27. I'm losing track.

NEC scores next, scoreboard goes to 26-28 in favor of KAZ but NEC celebbrate. I think it came out all right.

I'd be happy if THA won this thing because I love those players, even though I think Ajcharaporn is the only one who is actually on that team. I'm surprised there are no rules about this king of 'loaning', or maybe there are and they are lax, but this thing eventually becomes a FIVB match and one would think they'd weigh in. I mean, Jiangsu could swallow that THA team if they just "borrowed" Zhu, Yuan, Yan Ni, YY Li, and Hu that new MB

I just hope whomever wins sends a good team to the World Clubs, not that they'd win, but for dignity's sake.
