South Korea - KOVO V-League 2018/2019 + KOVO Cup 2018

  • I love Korean serves! That little running in place thing to start things off cracks me up

I just started watching, and speaking of serves, that stunningly beautiful Serbian girl starts off with a couple solid aces. And then #12 Moon Jung-Won, with an intimidating figure eight approach (another uniquely Korean thing*) nails one. Many Koreans serve like they just drank a pitcher of coffee :cheesy:

The presentation and stream quality is wonderful. It's going to make it hard to watch the Japanese crap streams :( I wish they would Romanize the names on their jerseys--but why would they? I'll never learn names.

*The setter I liked who perspired profusely in the Asian Games, I think it was, had a similar approach from the other side.

  • Poor IBK :gone:

A fun match. Great season opener! End of set 4, especially. I'm so jealous of this quality viewing experience. I can't even pay to watch Japan :cursing:

I love #12 Moon Jung-Won's serve. Park what's-her-name had a good game. Lot of foreign swings for IBK. I recognized a number of players, and recognized a few Korean actors in the commercials  Cho Jin-woong for one, I think. I like him as an actor quite a bit. Sleazy, suave, and nuts.

What's with the fake (I presume) tattoos? Korean women sporting tattoos is unusual. I like the design the high pass girls have.

MVP: 7. An Hye-Jin (GS Caltex)

SpoTV MVP - 1. Lee So-Young (GS Caltex)

    News Update:

    • GS Caltex setter 6. Lee Go-Eun is out for about 3 months with a right knee injury and reportedly had surgery on 12th. Sources: 1, 2, 3
  • I don't even know which team this woman is coaching but she's hilarious the way she claps for a good play, like she's British and drinking tea :rolll:

This is rock solid entertainment. Really nice camera work. They have live percussion and sound effects. Long rallies. They're Korean.:rose:

  • Now Kixx distributed the swings nicely... Both Lee So Young and Kang So Hwi got more swings than Alaina... perhaps because Alaina did not perform well..

This is a good start.. both for Hi-Pass and Kixx..

OTOH Hillstate seems really lost firepower after Han YooMi retirement... Their local OHs aren't up to high level yet...When Hwang Yeon Joo doesn't perform well, no one can cover Becky yet.. And they are also lost big in MB position.. Yang HJ doesn't have a good tandem yet...Still this is first match, so I hope they can improve...

Thanks for the report and stats....

  • Ok I finished updating the roster for all the teams. I chose to put the position found on the teams website rather than what is on KOVO. If you notice any mistake, please let me know, particularly url links.

If I read the stat right, PJA got 1.5 x more swings than Ivana... and she performed very well... maybe because it seems Ivana didn't perform well

At least they can try to balance the swings later matches, if PJA can keep her good performance...

On the other hand, Adora already got 80+ swings on her first match.. I hope they won't keep that way, or she could be injured early....

Yes you are reading it right (actual it 1.67x). Yes, Park Jeong-Ah was playing really well. Ivana had a good start to the game with a couple of aces but she faded away afterward. She just could not seem to get pass IBK blockers (particularly Adora) or find the floor. Eventually Ha Hye-Jin replaced Ivana on court.

Sorry to tell you this but Adora (and all the other foreign players) hitting 80+ spikes will happen more often there in Korea. If you look at the digs stats I provided you will find one of the reason why she has such a high swing counts. More balls getting recycle means more swings. Even Go Ye-Rim have a relatively high swing count of 50+ swing, but yeah they could have spread it a bit more by giving Kim Hee-Jin more of the ball.

The presentation and stream quality is wonderful. It's going to make it hard to watch the Japanese crap streams :( I wish they would Romanize the names on their jerseys--but why would they? I'll never learn names.

I have exactly the same problem.

  • Be careful not to get mix up between GS Aliona and KGC Alaina.

Aliona wasn't that impressive but a least she got a good serve. I think GS are thinking to themselves that they should have keep Fatou Diouck or someone else.

Hyundai losing Han Yoo-Mi is that bad. Losing Kim Se-Young to Heungkuk is a massive blow. Receptions is a major concern. Becky was brought in to help in that area but she didn't take on that many reception. Hyundai #10 Kim Ju-Hyang was terrible but I going to give her some slack for the time being since it was previous a MB (or non receiving OP/OH) and in her rookie year last year she only got game time toward the end of last season in the OH position. On the hand Hyundai libero #8 Kim Yeong-Yeon, a defensive specialist was really bad in reception. Also a bit of concern is Hyundai OP #4. Hwang Youn-Joo poor performance.

Sorry for the mix-up between Alaina and Aliona....

Maybe Hillstate should try their rookies .. if I'm not mistaken they picked 2 MBs..

Another problem Hillstate has, and I think it started last season, They don't have good backup setter... As good as Lee Da-young is, she needs break once and awhile to refresh her mind when the settings fail, and to add variety in their attack setting... Like she did when Yeum Hye-seon was their main setter...

I think the same problem Pink Spiders has: no good backup for Cho Song Hwa ....

  • Round 1 Match 6 - KGC Ginseng Corp. vs. Korea Expressway Corp. Hi-pass - October 27th, 2018

The announcers for this KGC match are the ones I like.

KGC is my team. The foreigner doesn't bug me yet. Still can't decide if #11 is going to be a difference maker. Han Soo-ji :rose: #10 tries hard, makes some good plays, but she's pretty short. She's my Korean Mizuki Yanagita. Who's the captain of KGC? Soo-ji?

#12 on Hi-Pass has that great serve but doesn't register much anywhere else. She 'looks' like she should be better. Like a veteran. The Serbian seems pretty flat in terms of impact.

The slightly slower speed of the Koreans makes it easier to see what's going on. Lots of recycling, fun rallies.

The overall presentation of these games is wonderful. All the stats (I can't read), the photos, the rockin theme song. The camera work is more intimate to the players than the standard FIVB approach, which I like a lot, but they show less from end-court or overhead, so we get less of that view of how plays get run. That's too bad. The camera that's seems like it's at the feet of the second ref catches some really cool stuff!

    Go KGC :super:

SpoTV MVP - 17. Lee Jae-Yeong (Heungkuk Pink Spiders)

    This Week Schedule:

Edited 2 times, last by theloneracer: Change the format, corrected player's name from Kim Yeong-Yeon to Kim Yeon-Gyeon, added achievements from the match. ().

  • I'm pretty sure (90% sure) Kim Soo-Ji is KGC captain. KGC #11 Choi Eun-Jin may not be as great as the other Korean player in the league but she seem to be a bit better in support of Alaina than what KGC had in the pass 3 seasons. For me the most outstanding and key player in KGC right now is their libero Oh Ji-Young. Her defensive play and in particular her pancake saves in their game against Expressway Hi-pass were wonderful to watch.

Out of all the foreign players only Adora Anae (IBK Altos) is playing great. Even the two returning foreign players, Alaina Bergsma (KGC Ginseng) and Ivana Nesovic (Expressway) have not been as dominating as they have been in the previous season. Both players current spiking success rate are about 6% (for Alaina) and about 10% (for Ivana) below their spike success rate of last season. For Alaina more so, is the fact that opposing team have a better knowledge of her attacking tendency than the other foreign players. Becky Perry (Hyundai E&C) is the foreign player that is struggling the most.

GS Caltex seem to have surprised everyone, particularly after losing their starting setter Lee Go-Eun just before the season started. Their foreign player Aliona Martiniuc is doing an okay job so far but their two Korean OHs Lee So-Young and Kang So-Hwi have really good, particularly So-Young. At the media day event, everyone was saying Heungkuk and Expressway were the contenders for this season championship. But GS Caltex sure threw their hat into the mix by beating Heungkuk 3-0.

Beside the Lee So-Young and Kang So-Hwi (GS Caltex), Park Jeong-Ah (Expressway) and Lee Jae-Yeong (Heungkuk), another Korean player that has also start the season well is Go Ye-Rim (IBK Altos).

  • Early in the season, and I can't even keep track of who's who or what team is what. I think because I watched those two pre-season GS v KGC games, I know them a little better--so they look better to me. I thought KGC played Heungkuk well enough the other day. They lost but it didn't seem predetermined.

Hyundai (the kind of car I drive!) is the team that looks a little lost so far.

I'm sticking with KGC and then GS. (GS because I like their setter, I want to root for her). I think GS will beat Hi-Pass tonight (Hi-Pass doesn't look that good to me so far), and then the big KGC v GS showdown on Wednesday. I can't wait!

  • GS is killing it with taps! Go KIXX!

GS #1 has a great serve. Lots of good servers in this league. Speaking of servers, #12 on Hi-Pass is going to drive me crazy 8o She looks so tough with that serve but she's kind of a train wreck everywhere else :rolll:

I just realized the blond setter is the one who's out from GS for a while. This seems like half a different team than the one I first met.

GS is killing it with taps!

  • I just finished the first two sets, and because there's only 30 minutes left of the video, GS has swept up Hi-Pass. Wow. Go KIXX! #1 is on fire. This isn't foreigner dominated and my buddy the Court Jester #7 seems like she's scoring a lot for a setter.
