South Korea - KOVO V-League 2018/2019 + KOVO Cup 2018

  • Lavarini, the head coach of Korean women's national volleyball team, interviewed at a press conference today and watched GS and Hyundai's match. I translated today's interview.

    I can also join the Korean national team in January 2020 (the Asian qualifying round for the Olympic Games)."

    The Korean women's volleyball team's first foreign head coach, Stefano Lavarini, has expressed his strong ambition.

    Lavarini arrived at Incheon International Airport on 28th, Feb and held a press conference at the Seoul Rivera Hotel at 1 p.m. on 1st, March.

    He said, "Thank you for giving me the first big responsibility. It's a big opportunity. The biggest goal is to win tickets for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I know that expectations are high. I also want to make good results in the Olympics. I'm excited about my great journey. I'm in the part of the process of realizing my dream. But I am Italian, and have coached in Europe. I am aware of the differences in culture and values, and I must learn about them a lot."

    He said about players, "I'm still in the process of catching their abilities. On average, however, Korean players have excellent technical skills. I will make good results by combining my volleyball philosophy and familiar play with my players."

    He also mentioned 'Speed Volleyball' about his volleyball philosophy. He also said, "My volleyball style is aggressive in a word. This is the style of starting attacks from the serve. According to the video clip which KVA provided to me, Korean players are also good. Furthermore, he explained "Also, I prefer that all four attackers to participate actively in the attack process. And I pursue simple volleyball rather than complex strategies." At the same time, he also emphasized Quick hit play.

    Currently Lavarini has coached the Brazilian women's volleyball club, Minas from 2017 and made remarkable results and drew attention. Minas' players and fans trust him a lot. This year, he's going to try to make it to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as the coach of the Korean women's volleyball team.

    Korean women's volleyball team is also aiming to advance to the Tokyo Olympics for the third consecutive time following the 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics. Moreover, it may be the last Olympics of Captain Kim Yeonkoung.

    There's not much time. Lavarini will go back to Brazil after spending four days in Korea. He will not be able to join the national team until April.

    Starting with the VNL, Korean national team will participate in the Olympics World Qualifier, the Asian Championship, the World Cup and the Olympics Asian Qualifier.

    Lavarini also mentioned "I, KVA, and my agency are also aware of the Asian qualifiers in January next year. I'm on the Brazilian team now, but I might go to Italy next season." So, he can join the national team without any problems in January next year.

    Meanwhile, he's going to watch GS&Hyundai's game on 1st, March, KGC&Heungkook's game on 2nd, and Hi-pass&GS game on 3rd. And He's going to leave for Brazil on the night of 3rd, March.

    Team Ranking Summary:

    1. Heungkuk Life - 56 Pts (19W 8L) --> 3 games remaining - Max 65 Pts (22W)
    2. Expressway Hi-pass - 51 Pts (18W 9L) --> 3 games remaining - Max 60 Pts (21W)
    3. GS Caltex - 51 Pts (18W 11L) --> 1 games remaining - Max 54 Pts (19W)
    4. IBK Altos - 47 Pts (15W 13L) --> 2 games remaining - Max 53 Pts (17W)
    5. Hyundai E&C - 29 Pts (9 W 20L) --> 1 games remaining - Max 32 Pts (10W)
    6. KGC Ginseng - 18 Pts (5W 23L) --> 2 games remaining - Max 24 Pts (7W)

    An important 3 points for GS Caltex in their fight for the play-offs. Good to see GS #1 Lee So-Young get back her form in this match and was very impressive with a 65% spike success rate. Also doing a good job for GS was their MB #15 Moon Myoung-Hwa (3 spike kill from 3 attempts and 3 block kills). And not to forget the match MVP #20 Aliona Martiniuc, what a great performance from her.

    Hyundai E&C was terrible in this match. One of Hyundai main point scorer #14 Yang Hyo-Jin was rather subdue in this match. Maybe Hyo-Jin has an injury? I saw Hyo-Jin holding her right shoulder for a long time just before she went to serve. A bit concerning when Korea number 1 MB might have an injury just before the international season :aww:.

    Another win for GS on Sunday will knock IBK out of the play-offs. However they are up against the inform Expressway Hi-pass, who are on a 6 game winning streak. A loss for GS would mean they have left the door open for IBK to get in the play-offs at their expense.

    As anoniminona12 had mentioned earlier, Korean NT Head Coach Stafano Lavarini was at the match watching the players.

  • and if hipass loses to gs, and heungkuk wins kgc, then that would be the celebration stage for heungkuk like in 2016/2017. cant wait!

  • and if hipass loses to gs, and heungkuk wins kgc, then that would be the celebration stage for heungkuk like in 2016/2017. cant wait!

    Heungkuk match against KGC (in Daejeon) is in a few hours time whilst Hi-pass vs GS is tomorrow.

    So if it does goes the way that you hope, then Heungkuk will celebrate the regular season championship after their game on Wednesday in front of their home crowd and in front of Hi-pass :whistle:.

    6. KGC Ginseng - 18 Pts (5W 24L) --> 1 games remaining - Max 21 Pts (6W)

    Upcoming Schedules:

  • Unfortunately, for both Heungkuk and GS Caltex fans, GS could not win yesterday match against Hi-pass. So now their fate lies in the hands of the other teams.

    From Heungkuk remaining 2 matches (Hi-pass on Wednesday and Hyundai on Saturday), they just need 1 point (win 2 sets in a single game). Good news for Heungkuk is that they remain unbeaten against Hyundai in all five matches this season.

    Hi-pass need are few result to go their way. First they need to defeat Heungkuk 3-0 or 3-1 on Wednesday. Secondly, they will need Hyundai to beat Heungkuk 3-0 or 3-1. Finally, they will need to beat IBK 3-0 or 3-1.

    IBK need 6 points, therefore they must win both their 2 remaining matches (KGC on Wednesday and Hi-pass on Sunday) by 3-0 or 3-1. Any 5 sets matches for IBK, then GS get the last playoffs spot.

    My only concern out of all this is if Heungkuk secure the regular season championship before Hi-pass last match with IBK on Sunday, how will Hi-pass approach their match against IBK. Will they try to win the match or will they rest their starters? Which team would they prefer to play against in the playoffs between GS or IBK?

  • its debatable between ibk and gs, but I just feel abit more burning fire from gs. hahahaha

    watching heungkuk and hipass game right now! great defense from both team, this seems like the finals for reals

  • Yes indeed, but to be fair video verification officials made two controversial decisions against Heungkuk. At the end of the first set ball touched the shoulder of Moon Jung-won and in the second Bae Yoo-na finger moved after one of Tomsia spikes. At least in tv coverage replays it looked that way.

    With regards to the point with Moon Jung-Won, I think the video review officials couldn't over turn that point because they could find conclusive evident that the ball touch Jung-Won's shoulder. From what I saw, the ball rotation didn't change at all when it went near her shoulder. I will have another look when the replay come out.

    Sorry, I was flicking back and forth between the 2 matches so I missed the second point with regards to Bae Yoo-Na.
