    • The V-League Award will be on today (April 1st) at 16:00 KST. Both KBSN Sports and SBS Sports will broadcast the event. I am pretty sure the same awards will be handed out again this year, Best Dress, Fair Play, Best Coach/Manager, Best Rookie, Best 7 (2x OH, 1x OP, 2x MB, 1x S, 1x Li), and the regular season MVP. For the Best 7, the scoring is 50% is base on their stats/records, 40% from the media votes, and 10% from expert committee votes. So who do you think will get which award? Source: 1, 2
    • From one news article, I think it mention that Lee Jae-Yeong is the first player to be unanimously voted as Championship MVP by getting all 29 votes. Also, she is the 3rd player to win the Best Rookie award, the Regular Season MVP award and the Championship MVP award. Sources: 1, 2
    • Previously, 2YEONG mentioned Milagros Collar (aka Maya) leaving Korea. Well, it turns out that Maya is now playing in Philippine SuperLiga (PSL) for Foton Tornadoes Blue Energy.     Ok, let start by explaining what happen in previously.


    In previous years, the FA period were split into 3 round of negotiation. Players who had FA status then, could only talk to their current team in the first round of negotiation. In the 2nd round, FA players who have not agreed on a new contract in the 1st round with their current team can now go out and speak with the other 5 teams. In the 3rd round player without new contract can go back to speak with their current team again. Finally if an FA player cannot reach an agreement at the end of all this, then the player cannot play for the entire upcoming season.


    In the case when a player does move to a new team:

    Let say the player A from Team X join a new Team Y during the FA period. Team X get to select 1 player from Team Y as a reward + 200% of player A previous salary with team X. However, Team Y can select 5 players including new player A to be protected from getting pick by Team X. In case Team X does not select another player from Team Y, then Team X can choose to get 300% of player A previous salary with them.



    Now this year, the new FA rules allows the 12 female players with FA status to speak with all 6 teams starting from April 1st until the deadline of 18:00 KST on April 12th. In addition, each FA players are classified depend on how much they earn. Player who earn above 100M KRW is classified as 'A', less than 100M KRW and over 50M KRW is classified as 'B', and less than 50M KRW is classified as C (btw the men have different range for A, B, and C).


    If an FA player does change team, then:

    - for a C-class player, the new team needs to compensate the previous team 150% of the player previous salary (so no reward player).

    - for a B-class player, the new team needs to compensate the previous team 300% of the player previous salary (again no reward player).

    - for an A-class player, then the same rules in previous years applies of 200% salary + 1 player or 300% salary + no player. The only difference this time is that the recruiting team get to protect a total of 6 players (including the newly recruit class A player/s).


    The recruiting team must then give a list of protected players by 12:00 KST on April 13th and the team that lost the player have until 18:00 KST on April 16 to pick 1 non-protected player from the recruiting team.

    I found more details about the 50% of scoring for the Best 7 awards is from a player overall standing in particular stats/records. Source: 1 (go to the second table under Article 52 or 제 52 조)


    OH (2 persons) - 15% from serve receptions ranking, 15% from points scored ranking, 10% from spike success rates ranking, 10% from serves ranking.

    OP (1 person) - 20% from points scored ranking, 20% from spike success rates ranking, 10% from serves ranking

    MB (2 person) - 30% from blocks ranking, 15% from points scored ranking, 5% from serves ranking

    S (1 person) - 50% from sets ranking

    Li (1 person) - 50% from defence (digs + receptions) ranking


    Points are awarded only to player from 1st to 10th in the particular stats standing.

    1st -> 100, 2nd -> 80, 3rd -> 60, 4th -> 40, 5th -> 20, 6th and below -> 10.


    From my understanding Lee Jae-Yeong who is an OH, her scoring is based on 15% from receptions stats (11th overall) - 0, 15% from points stats (2nd overall) - 80, 10% from spikes stats (7th overall) - 10, and 10% from serves stats (18th overall) - 0.


    Not sure if I am correct now because Lee Jae-Yeong scoring from her stats is only 13 (=0+12+0+1) / 50.

    With regards to the Korean system, there are pros and cons. The most notable cons is that it is harder for Korean player to move between team or advance to overseas league (like in KYK case). Whilst one of the pros is that the club provide funding to the new drafted rookie schools (High school, Middle school and Elementary school).

    • Wow! This news caught me by surprise.

      IBK Altos head coach Lee Jung-Chul (LJC) has handed in his resignation after a disappointing season where IBK just missed out on the playoffs. LJC has lead IBK since their inception in 2011 and have help them make it to the Championship for 6 consecutive seasons, winning 3 Championship titles and 3 Regular Season titles. However, LJC will not be leaving the team completely as he will now be taking on an advisory role with IBK. The reason for LJC resignation was that he was fatigued wanted to have a rest.     • IBK Altos have made the first moves in FA period. Today they announced the signing of OP Pyo Seung-Ju (PSJ) from GS Caltex. PSJ will be a wonderful addition to IBK as she can play in multiple positions (OH, OP and MB). PSJ will be earning 150M KRW (approx. $131,846 USD) annually for the next 3 seasons at IBK. Also, IBK was able to retain the service of setter Lee Na-Yeon with a contract of 120M KRW (approx. $105,477 USD) annually for the next 3 seasons. Sources: 1, 2, 3
    • Thailand defeat Korea in the first of two matches in this year Korea-Thailand Pro Volleyball Super Match 3-2 ( 25 - 23, 29 - 27, 23 - 25, 23 - 25, 15 - 11 ). Kongyot Ajcharaporn and Lee Jae-Yeong were the top scorer for their respective teams, Ajcharaporn with 25 points (18 spike kill from 40 attempts, 5 block kills and 2 aces) and Jae-Yeong with 26 points (21 spike kills from 48 attempts, 2 block kills, 3 aces).     • In the second match of the 2019 Korea-Thailand Super Match (KTSM), Korea defeated Thailand 3-0 ( 25 - 15, 25 - 21, 25 - 23 ) and levelling the series 1-1. After the game end, Lee So-Young and Tomkom Nootsara were named MVPs. For this last match, Korea coach Park Mi-Hee replaced Kang So-Hwi and Park Eun-Jin with Bae Yoo-Na and Jeong Ji-Yun. Also, props to Moon Jung-Won for single-handedly destroying Thailand reception-line and any hope of Thai comeback in the first set with 5 consecutive service aces. Sorry, no match stats found yet.     • News regarding IBK OH Go Ye-Rim (GYR) transfer first came out on the morning of April 7th (Sun) before the Korea-Thailand Super Match (KTSM). Sports Chosun first reported that insiders in Korean pro-volleyball are saying that GYR will move to Hyundai E&C. Later that day, a few more articles came out citing that Hyundai officials have confirmed that terms have been agreed on with GYR and they are only waiting to have the contract signed when GYR get back from Thailand. In some of those same articles, it was also mentioned that Hyundai MB Yang Hyo-Jin (YHJ) has agreed to remain with the team. Hyundai & YHJ hopes to finalise the contract sometime this week.     • Two articles about Korea Expressway Hi-pass libero Yim Myung-Ok (YMO) came out today. Each reporting slightly different but similar outcomes. The first article reported that she will be staying with the team. Whilst, the second article is reporting that she is leaning toward staying with the team. It further mentioned that an official from the team said that nothing has been finalised but discussions have been positive. YMO is currently away on holiday in with her husband in Hawaii and will return tomorrow on April 9th. Hi-pass is also negotiating will YMO's teammate MB Bae Yoo-Na but the latter is also absent due to the KTSM. Hi-pass official has stated that they will talk to both players upon their return.     • As I mentioned yesterday, Hyundai E&C today confirmed the re-signing of their captain Yang Hyo-Jin (YHJ) and the signing of OH Go Ye-Rim (GYR) from IBK Altos. YHJ new contract will see her become the sole salary queen of Korean volleyball once again, by earning 350M KRW (approx. $306K USD) annually for the next 3 years (the maximum amount currently allow).     • Good news and bad news for Expressway Hi-pass fans.

      The good news is that libero Yim Myung-Ok (YMO) will stay at Expressway Hi-pass for another 2 seasons. An official from Hi-pass said that they have signed a new contract with YMO. The new contract is two years long and it will see YMO earn 180M KRW (approx. $158K USD) annually.

      And... the bad news is that middle blocker Bae Yoo-Na (BYN) is very likely to leave. One report stated that negotiation with BYN has virtually broken down and a Hi-pass official was quoted as saying "The contract with BYN is likely to be difficult". A second report wrote that despite Hi-pass head coach Kim Jong-Min (KJM) had requested the club to re-sign BYN but the club's decision to give up on re-signing her has left KJM shocked. While a third report wrote that because BYN will soon be a newly-wed, she wants to reside in a metropolitan area.

      I'm not sure if the conjecture in that last report is even true or even confirm but there is some merit. BYN's fiancé Baek Seung-Ho is currently a swimmer for Osan City Hall. Osan is like about a 2-hours drive to get to Gimcheon (where Expressway Hi-pass is based). Too long to travel that distance, twice almost every day for either of them. So BYN might want to settle somewhere nearer to Osan, somewhere near like Suwon (Hyundai), Hwaseong (IBK), Seoul (GS) or Incheon (Heungkuk), all around a 1-hour drive of Osan.

    My guess is Mr Baek Seung-ho is not very popular individual among Hi-Pass fans at this moment. If BYN really leaves, Hi-Pass might want to sign Kim Na-hee as a replacement. She's the same age as BYN and still a very decent MB.

    • Apparently today (April 10th) the 49 female applicants for the tryout will find out if they have been invited to the tryout in May. From an article, some familiar names popped up as having applied for the tryout, such as Hayley Spelman, Taylor Simpson and Samantha Middleborn. From the players who played in this past season, Fatou Diouck (Hi-pass), Adora Anae (IBK), Maligros Collar (Hyundai), and Alaina Bergsma (KGC) are all hoping to continue their volleyball career in Korea.

      Another article is reporting that a surprisingly big name player had applied for the tryout. The reported player in question is Italian OP Valentina Diouf who was recently playing in the Brazilian league. The consensus among the teams is if they were to get the first pick at the tryout then they would pick Diouf. One coach even thinks that which team get Diouf then they will win the championship. However, the belief that Diouf would actually participate in the tryout was mix and remain doubtful. The report mentioned that previously there have been cases where players who were invited to the tryout and were highly rated by the teams did not show up. Such as when players receive bigger and better offers from Europe, the player will naturally give up on attending the tryout. Sources: 1, 2

    The strange thing about this, is the fact that it was Hi-pass who pulled out of the negotiation and not BYN walking away (that my understanding from the translation of the news articles). At the end of the day it might not be related to her upcoming marriage but rather $$$.


    Yeah, Kim Na-Hee (KNH) is still a decent MB and she might be cheaper but BYN is better at blocking. Now that I think about it, maybe Hi-pass is in fact playing hard ball and using KNH against BYN at the negotiation table.



    With Lee Go-Eun FA contract settled, it means that six of the twelve FA status players have new contracts. The other six players have about two days left remaining to sort out their future.
