FIVB World Cup 2019 - Sept. 14 to 29, Japan

  • Brazil and Netherlands can't afford to lose anymore matches if they want to medal. So realistically, Brazil hopes USA to beat Russia to have a chance at a bronze.

  • The still open medal race keeps the tournament in some suspense until the last days

and the outcomes of the upcoming Friday's matches will tell us a lot about the would-be conclusions!

Basically the Team Rossiya has the equal opportunity as the Team USA.

  • a win by russia.against usa or brazil ithink.will guarantee them a medal?!

.assuming russia beats usa and will lose to brazil it will be 9-2d for russia and also to usa (9-2) so it will boils down to points system brazil will be 8-3..if russia loses to usa and wins against brazil usa will take the silver and bronze for russia..if russia both lose their against brazil and usa russia will have the same standing with brazil and so it will be points system for the bronze...( ididnt include the dutch team because their next match is against china assuming they will lose..)

Yeah, just one win is enough to medal.

Assuming they win their last match.

  • Well, Russia only needs to win 2 sets against the US and then win against Kenya so that the match against Brazil will not matter at all.

I hope the US beats Russia in 3 sets of course

Russia needs to beat USA to guarantee a medal. If not, they will have to beat Brazil or win 2 sets against Brazil to win by sets tie breaker. Brazil can still get max 24 points to beat Russia if Russia were to get 1 point from USA and 3 points from Kenya and lose 3 points against Brazil, ending with Brazil 8-3 and Russia 8-3 with Brazil edging Russia 24 to 23 points tiebreaker.

  • I hope the US beats Russia in 3 sets of course

Russia beat USA in straight sets last 2015 WC but I'm guessing we are gonna have a 5 setter this time around just like WCH :box:

  • Worst case scenario for fans is Russia beating USA, eliminating Netherlands and Brazil from medal contention. Best case is USA beating Russia and Netherlands winning against China. Then we have 3 teams competing for bronze.

  • Netherlands winning against China. Then we have 3 teams competing for bronze.

Has NED A actually beaten CHN A before? Even so, China is looking mighty fine right now I doubt NED can even take a set against them

At this Olympic cycle I don't think so, but they did in Rio 2016

Like Sidney mentioned, during Rio pool play in 5 sets. Lost in 4 close sets in Rio semis. After Rio, not so much. It is clear that NED level has decreased after Rio. I think most of it is mental and poor coaching. NED is capable of beating China but unlikely based on what we have seen so far.

  • This world cup is China's to lose. Unless NED pulls an upset which is unlikely with how they are playing right now. Anne Buijs is a liability in passing. The more interesting battle is the one for silver which will be between USA and Russia. USA is more favored in this aspect but Russia has really improved with their passing and defense which was their achilles heel since 2016. Russia vs Brazil will also be an exciting match because Brazil has really been peaking at this tournament.

China has been one of the best serving teams of the tournament. Expect them to throw everything they've got at Buijs, and when she's subbed off, Plak.

  • Xinhua News Agency conducted an interview with Charles 'Karch' Kiraly and here is the translated version.

The U.S. Women's Volleyball Coach: We want to compete for the championship in Tokyo Olympic Games

Xinhua News Agency, Sapporo, Japan, September 25 (Reporter Wang Meng, Wang Jingyu) - The U.S. women's volleyball coach Kiraly said in an interview with Xinhua on 9/24 that the goal of the U.S. team in next year's Tokyo Olympic Games is to win the championship, and China team is also one of the champion competitors.

Karch Kiraly (left) was interviewed by Wang Meng, a reporter from

Xinhua News Agency in Sapporo, Japan on 2019.9.24

On 25-26 September are the truce days of the women's volleyball World Cup in 2019. So far, the U.S. team has won 7-1. The only defeat is a 3-0 defeat to China.

"So far, we've done well and we've beaten all our opponents except China," Kiraly said. In that match, the Chinese team played well and inhibited the American team. However, apart from that game, we are very satisfied with the performance of the team.

In this year's VNL match at Jiangmen station, the United States defeated the Chinese team in the main line-up by 3:0. In Kiraly's opinion, the improvement of serve and pass is the biggest change for the Chinese team.

"They have improved a lot in serving and passing, but our passing is not so good. In fact, the Chinese team has played well in many aspects, and they have made great progress compared with the VNL.

When the reporter asked Kiraly to comment on the players who impressed him deeply, he said, "Every player of the Chinese team played well. It was a great team victory."

Kiraly said that in the past, the U.S. team would attack the first pass of the Chinese team and some other weaknesses, but in that CHN vs USA match, the Chinese team had almost no weaknesses.

Previously, the U.S. women's volleyball team had never won an Olympic championship, and Kiraly considers the Tokyo Olympics a good opportunity. "I don't know if it's the best chance, but it's definitely a good one, and we're excited about it. We want to win a gold medal. We haven't won a gold medal yet. Our task is to strive for the championship."

Kiraly believes that there will be a lot of strong teams competing for the championship in next year's Tokyo Olympics, including China. "China is definitely the champion contender, Serbia is also the contender, they won the World Championship and European Championship. The Italian team is also very good. They won the second place in the World Championship. Russia is playing better and better. Brazil has always been strong. So, there are many teams in the Olympics who have opportunities, and we want to play until the end.

The U.S. team has young players like Washington and Porter. Kiraly said they may be the backbone of the U.S. team, but there are also variables.

"These young players have great potential and they may play an important role next year. However, there is no fixed number yet. Every player we bring to the Tokyo Olympic Games must try her best to win the chance to be included in the list. (end)
