2022 FIVB World Championship - POL/SLO

  • The problem is that you have teams like Qatar or Cameroon in the top 24 of ranking which is... not realistic. They have much bigger chance to qualify than FIN, CZE or EST who are probably stronger than them. I'd say Australia is also stronger but they screwed up losing to Qatar in 2019 OG qualifier so I guess they deserve to be out.

CAVB and AVC will still have continental championships right? The rankings will fluctuate there. Can't really control the FIVB's want for representation either.

COVID didn't really help the new rankings being released. Looking at the Golden League, the Czech's and Estonian's could've done better there to secure their spots. It looks like Finland didn't even enter.

I don't have any expertise re: the men's game.. but if they "deserved" (i dont like phrasing it like that), they should've done better in those events. Looks like none of the three teams even finished in the top 12 of the last Euros, where there were a lot of points to be gained/lost.

  • Puerto Rico and Canada have officially qualfied.

Cuba and USA will qualify anyway through ranking.

Mexico will have to wait and see if they can make the cut, though the 3rd place match vs Cuba could help them climb some vital positions in the ranking if they win.

  • It's even worse because of how horrendous the FIVB ranking is. For example, while the VNL playing teams got points with each match, the teams that played the European League got nothing. Also, the "strong" teams get points for World Cup, World Championship, Continental Championship, Continental Qualification, Olympic Games etc, while smaller nations can only get points by playing the Continental qualification. They aren't allowed to play VNL,,the continental equivalents do not grant ranking points, and real World Championship qualificaton tournaments just got scrapped by FIVB. It's a nightmare, but something in me tells me this was done on purpose.

If this continues, the difference between top 15-20 teams and the other 180 nations will be horrifying in a few years.

Just checked the rankings. Because of this system decent teams of Australia (rank 28), Finland (rank 33), Czech Republic (rank 46) Estonia (rank 47) or Venezuela (rank 58) may not even get the chance of playing the qualification tournament, not to mention the World Championship itself.

In the past the ranking system was the total of your points over 4 years and included World Champs (and qualifying), Olympic Games (and qualifying), World League/Grand Prix (VNL too only most recent edition), World Cup and Continental Champs (only the most recent one as every two years).

  • the top teams may have changed spots by playing in international events World Champs, Olympics, World Cup and World League really pushed you up the rankings. A Continental tournament was only worth 30 points. Even World Championship Qualifying (if not making the tournament) was like a max of 15 points (do have the data just not at the computer) and was based on your finish, not each match.

In Africa and Asia some teams would only play once in four years, so their ranking would come and go.

Remember you play more in the Continental sections (world championship Qualifiers and Continental tournaments) for the small teams. I think for 2022, the FIVB was basically in a time constraint. To actually do qualifying events with everything pushed back just made no sense.
we still need to give the new ranking system another year or two because this year is really its first year. Some Euro qualifiers got in last year and is going to be shifted to 2018-2019 results.

  • Does FIVB update world ranking daily during ECh?

  • At present with the updated version of qualifying (top 2 teams from each continent), host, world champions and then the top 12 teams.

  • I was looking for the ranking today and i think the top 20 will easily clasify, even if they are not continental champions. Maybe de 20-24 places can make it to the WCh.
These countries have to cheer for all the european teams to be on the top performances at Eurovolley and Tunisia and Egypt to clasify as African finalists, but it think they won't bc the format is taking them to clash in the semis... maybe Cameroon will be in the WCh as an African finalist or Morocco (huge upset).

Oh, they have to support Iran and Japan too?! Maybe Korea can add some points, even Qatar can surprise as they fought hard in the last Olympic qualifier... I don't think Australia can take a spot.

These are my thoughts! Still reading all the forum and searching for more info!

it looks like points are about 5 a match right now. So maybe around 40 points of movement potential.

In Europe, there are about 4-5 matches left (pool+playoffs). Remember if you lose in playoffs there, your points will stop with the last match. May benefit oddly with others below them having to chase.

Asia has not started yet, while Africa just started.

Plus win one day and lose the next, which kind of becomes 0, in the end.

  • i realised Mexico received 4 points today 09-09 because de Norceca Pan Am Cup is still happening and it counts points with 10 factor for the ranking, still less than an continental tourn that has 35 factor... but it's already something! Today, they have a final match vs Canada.

For the African Champs, Kenya upsets Egypt (decreased some points) and i think if they continue to perform bad, they won't be able to take a spot... i just saw the African's format and i think it's gonna be TunisiaxCameroon in the finals... my bet!

Belgium is out of Eurovolley and Chile is already done for this NT season so... i think they're out :(

South Korea is in a "life" pool for the Asian's 1st phase, they'll get some points, but there's a second round when they'll face the top teams... still can't see clearly what can happen there, since they're well ranked rn.

btw, thanks for the info, the reply on my comment!

  • with Africa’s semifinals being Monday, two from the bottom group will move up to locks.

If Cameroon and Morocco win, then the rank cut line will be #21 in the World Rankings, as three teams will be below that number and advancing to the World Championships.

If Tunisia and Egypt win, then the number will be #23/24 depending on the final ranking of Puerto Rico

  • Asian Championships already started today. Iran and Japan are locks to qualify regardless of the AVC result given their WR. I think Korea is will get in also, and likely one or two of Qatar/China/Chinese Tapei/Australia because the points are too close.

  • 3-5 points for wins right now, possibly more if win over teams ranked higher than you.

Cameroon is possibly out with a loss Monday. Basically a loss and win can cancel each other out on points (does change with opponent rank, but premise makes sense).

Netherlands is almost a lock right now. A win would all but seal it, but throw in Turkey and/or Bulgaria losses and an Egypt/Tunisia loss too, no one is catching them.

Germany is in about the same spot as Netherlands.
