2022 FIVB Women's World Championships - Netherlands and Poland

  • Usually (not only for WCH, but also Olympic Qualification Torunaments) the host countries could change the schedule of their games as they wanted. I can assume that Netherlands used that privilege and polish federation didn't care about that.

Yeah that's right. Netherlands also did that for the 1st round matches. But its part of the rules

Why wouldn’t it care while it changes everything?

  • There is a stipulation in the FIVB hosting, the hosts can choose a certain number of matches to be moved. In the first round, it is usually one or two at most. Hence why Italy was the last match of the first round. In the second round, if the hosts made it through, they would likely get the chance to choose one match.

  • I don't really trust the Dig/Set/Receive statistics. Sometimes the numbers are so weird in single match. Anyway, I just calculate...

Here I also make some data visualization and calculate by old ranking system.

(Planning to update after phase 2 / phase 3)

FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Netherlands - Poland 2022 (wehslai.github.io)

This is good, but one quirk that I used was to calculate sets by 48 points (25-23 or anything below 48 being a "normal set"). A fifth set before extra points would go to 28 or 0.58 (28/48) sets. So a 5 set match is actually 4.58 sets.

If any set goes into extra points then take the total points and divide by 48. Say 60 points (60/48) would be 1.25 sets played. Then add that to the other sets.

So 1.00 (<48) + 1.00 (<48) +1.25 (60/48) = 3.25 sets played (156/48). This is done to ensure that the calculations of a set are the same. Kine of like minutes played statistics for the NBA.

Plus some players play more sets than others in FIVB, so trying to compare the totals make no sense. What are you actually should be on a set-by-set basis.

  • There is nothing wrong with Polish federation, they trust their team, the way it should be. I doubt it this will make a big difference for Netherland at the end. Plus, most upset happens on the first game of the phase, even though for Poland vs Serbia that is highly unlikely!!

  • Apply old ranking system is my aim, so it is pretty simple.

For more precise numbers, I would choose "per Rally". There are "Total rallys played by each player" in FIVB's database, though it'll be a hard work to check data correctness.

damn near impossible, without watching every point.

I get trying to choose the term per rally, but who are we kidding, every serve is a point. Some just take longer to get there.
