How many U-Squads does your country have?

  • Something has changed or is changing with regards to U-tournaments. Rather than research the rest of the world I want to just ask you folks to tell me if it's the same as it appears to be in Asia.

Here's what's happened/happening in Japan/Asia. (Everything is linked to its source in the table below. "Details" is the Wikipedia page; "Asian" is to AVC.net; the rest go to JVA site squads and overview).

You can see that "Youth" and "Junior" have given way to age specifics and U23 has been created. Except for the Asian U18 tournament in 2017 it appears that Japan have adapted their schedule to compete in alternating years with FIVB. A U17 squad will compete to qualify for the next year's FIVB U18.

So Japan now has: U17-U18-U19-U20 and U23 squads.

Here's what the Google showed me about Europe:

    • 2018 CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship - Women
    • 2017 CEV U18 Volleyball European Championship - Women
    • 2015 CEV U18 Volleyball European Championship - Women
    • 2013 CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship - Women
    • 2011 CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship - Women
    • GIRLS - Youth European Championships 2009

Something is going on and I want to get to the bottom of it. Does your country have FIVE specific aged squads now? Or still just U18 and U20 that might compete continentally to qualify for the FIVB U18 with players who become too old to play the FIVB tournament. Or what?

  • U20 team are girls born in 2000 and younger

U18 team are girls born in 2002 and younger

U16 team are girls born in 2004 and younger

And yes, those are different teams 🙂 In Poland they also have different competitions. The girls play for U20, U18 and U16 championships with their club teams.

There was also U-23 WCH if I remember right.

  • The girls play for U20, U18 and U16 championships with their club teams.

I don't get that part but it's another can of worms for my small brain until I figure this other part out:

Very specifically, what name did the Polish squad go by who went to the 2018 CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship - Women?

It's freaking me out that if you have an U17 Tournament you have to be U17 to play in it, but there's no such thing as an U17 squad:!:They're just an U18 squad in disguise :rolll:
