South Korea - Women's V-League 2019-2020

  • Sim MO usually played as backup libero for Hillstate.. but Altos should train her again as MB to give more options in MB position, so Kim Hee Jin can concentrate to become better OP for NT sake....

Sim Mi-Og was classified as a MB on the team roster whilst she was at Hyundai. Hyundai would often uses Go Yoo-Min and Lee Yeong-Ju as pinch servers so you would see Mi-Og as the backup libero most of the time. I doubt Sim Mi-Og will get to see much court time. There are about five MBs already there at IBK, but one or two might get released. I would have like to seen Hyundai keep her and raise her as OH instead.

Speaking of OH, I remember seeing an article last month saying that Hyundai head coach Lee Do-Hee is planning to gradually switch Jeong Ji-Yun from MB to OH over the next few years. So expect to see Ji-Yun playing on the wings more often. Source: 1

  • Any news for foreign female draft? Kovo just posted for male.

    I only know the timeframe.

May 10 - Tryout applications deadline.

May 20 - Teams will submit a list of players they want to invite (not including any foreign players from this season who applied for renewal).

June 10 - Selection of female foreign players.

As to how women's teams will pick the players is yet to be decided but should be known soon after the list of invitees has been confirmed.

Fatou Diouck, Aliona Martiniuc, and Katherine Bell names were mentioned in one article as to have applied for the tryout. An interesting fact is that all three players have played for GS Caltex.

  • Here are some quick updates.

Former NT setter Kim Sa-Nee (KSN) has rejoined IBK Altos as part of their coaching staff. After retiring, KSN has been working as a commentator for SBS Sports. Sources: 1, 2, 3

KGC has also added support to the coaching staff of head coach Lee Young-Taek by hiring fellow Hanyang University alumni and former Hyundai Capital player Jang Young-Gi as a senior coach. He has experience working in the coaching staff of pro teams, Expressway Hi-pass from 2015-16 and men's team KB Star from 2016-17. Source: 1

  • News Update:

    • Another 2:2 player trade was announced to the media today (May 21). This time the trade is between GS Caltex Kixx and Korea Expressway Hi-pass. GS have traded setter Lee Go-Eun and outside hitter Han Song-Hui for Hi-pass setter Lee Won-Jeong and outside hitter Yoo Seo-Yeun.

    • On Monday, a few articles came out stating that a total of 74 players (including Diouf, Lutz, Fresco, and Spelman) had applied for the women's foreign player draft. The six female teams will whittle the list down to 40 plus the 4 players from the 2019/20 season. Just like how the men's teams did so recently the female teams will have to select the foreign player base on videos too. The date of the draft has now been moved forward from June 10 to the first week of June.

From these articles, it mentions one of the team official saying that Cuban player Rosir Calderon had applied for this year draft. In another article, they mentioned that Karina Ocasio (previously played for Heungkuk and IBK) had also applied. Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4
    • A belated congratulations to Hwang Youn-Joo and basketball player Park Kyung-Sang who got married last Saturday.

  • Volleyball.it has published a list with the 41 players who have passed the first step. Diouf,Lutz, Fresco and Spelman will join these players for the 6 available spots if I understand correctly.

These 41 players are in the yellow table of this link https://www.volleyball.it/kore…cNZ9FBzlTTxz53rTVnQbSivPg

Why are some names highlighted in red?🤔

  • So some of the players like Ivonne Montano, Helene Rousseaux, Anna Lazareva, Gozde Yilmaz that I saw from Korean internet users were correct after all.

The final number of applicants who've made the list for the foreign player draft was 45. This was one more than the expected number and from what I have read the reason was because applicant #40 and #41 tied in their evaluation by the teams.

The women's foreign player draft will be held on June 4 at 14:00 KST at Hotel Riviera in Seoul. The order of pick will be decided via lottery draw just like in previous years. The number of balls each team get depend on where they finished in the league. I'm expecting KOVO will stream the draft via their youtube channel just like how they did so with the men's foreign player draft last week.

    6th - Expressway Hi-pass will get 30 balls, 5th - IBK Altos will get 26 balls, 4th - KGC will get 22 balls, 3rd - Heungkuk will get 18 balls, 2nd - GS Caltex will get 14 balls, and 1st - Hyundai E&C will get 10 balls. Sources: 1, 2, 3

The latest news is that there is now only 5 slots left for the 44 remaining applicants. News out this morning in Korea is that Valentina Diouf has agreed to play with KGC for a second season. Source: 1, 2

  • wow... that's tight.. 1/9 th chance to be drafted...

I notice Maya is on the list.. I don't think she will be picked .. her performance was just average for foreigner and she's proned to injury..

I'd be surprise if Ajcharaporn is picked.. considering her height is the same as average local players .. though she's a very good spiker....

Oops... Sorry, I forgot to mention Maya.

I don't think Ajcharaporn will be picked either. If there is an injury then I can see her coming because it may be easy for a Korean team to reach an agreement with a Thai team (assuming she will stay in Thailand).

Of the other three players who had applied for contract renewal, Lutz has the best chance of returning. Lucia did okay, but I have a feeling Heungkuk might pick someone else. With KGC already re-signing Diouf, Heungkuk chances of getting an earlier pick increase. Haley was a bit of a miss here and there, so unless Hyundai feels like there is no better option then I don't see them re-signing her.

Also, I saw in the transfer news thread that two of the players on the draft list, Michaela Mlejnkova and Willow Johnson have already signed with other teams. Sources: 1, 2, 3

Also Kjelstrup and Hudecova already signed with different teams.

  • Thank you Phil

Now there are 5 vacancies for 40 applicants. So the odd is now 1 in 8 chance.

I am not very familiar with a lot of the players on the list. If anyone care to share some info or opinion about some of these players on the list and how they are playing, please do. Particularly for the prominent players or the up and coming players.

I can tell you about the 3 Dominican players; all 3 of them are in the Dominican National team:

Yonkaira Peña, 27, OH-OPP, Played the last 3 seasons in Sesc Río (Brazil), strong attacker (fast balls ) and good server but not a reliable passer or blocker.i Think she could do good in KOVO because of Her strong attacks and wont face a high block.

Here one of Peña’s 30 points game.

Pinheiros x Sesc RJ - Quartas de Final (JOGO 1) - Superliga de Vôlei Feminino 2017/2018

Lisvel Eve Mejia, 27, MB-OPP-OH, she play best as a MB however she is a good passer with great defensive skills, i wouldn’t hire her as a OPP or OH althought her height(1.94)could give her an advantage.

Gaila González, 22, OPP, Great blocker, lefty, can be good attacking against block. Played last 2 seasons in Turkey.

  • I can't even imagine a team with both the twins and kyk. 3 players of national team..and they're the main players, not even the backup.

But yeah, salary cap is a huge concern. More than 70% from total salary cap just for 3 players is just too much.

    What about other Heungkuk players...

I'm curious, is foreign player's salary included in the salary cap too?

Didn't they usually get around 200+ million won per season?
