2019 ASEAN Grand Prix (Sept 20–22, Thailand

  • Philippines just got a set from THA 25-23 3rd Set. They are up 8-6 in the 4th. THA forced to field in their stars. Pornpun Pimpichaya Malika Onuma Thatdao Pleumjit and Piyannut in from 3rd set.

  • PH's problem is with their coach. They keep on letting Molina play when she commits too much error and can't kill the ball. Too bad since this is the best PH NT has been looking. Should have used Mau and Laure. Also Marano can't block to save her life. It's time for new bloods Laure, Mau, and Madayag to lead this team.

Pushing THA to 4 sets is still good. Would have been better if Shaq knew how to handle his players.

  • I didn't see either match. They start at midnight here. That involves staying up instead of getting up.

I'm surprised by Vietnam's losses, but I guess I've thought them better only because I'm more familiar with them, as rudimentary as it is.

  • Never thought that this Indonesian team, without Manganang (1st OH) and Berlian (NT main libero), could beat Vietnam in straight sets.

Yesterday, one of our main NT fan account in ig held discussion in comment section, and most of us thought that today's match would be a loss for us, and it's reversed.

One change that helped the team a lot was when Arsella was put as OH instead of MB, her main position in NT for many years. She used her experience as MB to make a lot of touch from Vietnam Opp and help the team to recycle the ball for counter attack. And her attack was surprisingly good. I think this is her first time as OH and our coach put her as starter instead of other OHs that served our NT for years.

And I'm so happy that our girls are having a good time playing in this competition. And I'm so proud for this team because they showed us better than what we expected.

  • Did Vietnam send in their Team A Seniors? T4 is there but I think some of their starting 6 are also not present. Same goes for Indo with Aprilia; PHI with Jaja, Dindin, Valdez; THA: Hattaya, Tomkom

Anyway I think this is a bit of a surprise tournament for INDO and PHI. Indo winning against VI; PHI pushing INDO and THAI to 5th and 4th sets respectively. The level is really getting nearer.

  • The level is really getting nearer

I humbly disagreed as that's an overstatement, but no doubt they are slowly improving.

THA's level are still far above all other Asian nations with exception of the top 3 Asian nations and will be for many more years to come. Their world level performance are a lot better than this. Here, they are still providing challenge, yet not going at it full force.

Will PHI one day topple them or be at THA's level? Its possible, just not this current generation of PHI players.

  • THA team has the habit of doing well when facing stronger opponents but doing poorer when facing weaker teams. I don’t know why.

Their reception was bad yesterday though. Far below their standard. If they can’t receive PHI’s service well, just imagine what’s going to happen with KOR’s service in January :|

  • yeah, it will be tough come January. KOR has good service and both attacking and defense has also improved with the new Italian coach coaching them.

Though both teams are still rather inconsistent, so guess whomever performance is bettert then, will earn the last olympic ticket from the asian region.

  • Indonesia team clearly showed a huge improvement while my dear VNI team simply lost their driving forces to win. I don't know who to blame - the federation, the coach or the players themselves. Local fans are raving about how awful the sponsors (lol), the federation and the coach team are, but i believe the players also are not purely innocent.

The way they played was pathetic, comparing to their performance at VTV cup a while ago. It's 2019 already and they were not able to receive or defense a ball properly, talking about a 10-year-experience-in-NT libero! Whilst i can't even remember the last time any of the 3 best MBs (1 in Thai leauge, 1 in local league, 1 in U23 Asia championship) had a kill block. 4T was not in her best shape right now (she will go to Japan after today's match) while the main setter and 2 main OHs are still recovering from injury. Hence, local fans are now talking about how the team is gonna compete with Malaysia and Myanmar for 4th place in the upcoming Seagames lol.

  • The Thai team will have advantages of practicing together though. Korean league will start soon and all the players are playing in different teams with different systems. Plus KYK will be back to Turkey.

The Thai league will start in January after the OQ to give them the best chance of practicing together as an NT.

I do really hope they can win. Let’s see :)

I give the the one from Thai league a bit of slack. She is still a teen. She'll eventually get better.

That's nice. I hope Ajcharaporn and Hattaya will be in shape by then.

Know anything why Thanacha isnt in Japan practicing with her club, but came back to play with the u23 in Taiwan instead? Maybe she got a little break or something?

  • PHI v VIE Tie Break!

  • Somebody's going to have to explain that Center Line Fault at the end of the match to me

    PHI wins!

  • Somebody's going to have to explain that Center Line Fault at the end of the match to me

    PHI wins!

Center line faults look at the feet. The WHOLE foot should STEP on the other court for it to be considered a fault. Paat's (OPP) foot was raised (not even touching the ground). The ball was still in play when T4 committed a net fault.

  • Onuma is such a goddess.

I’d be surprised if she doesn’t get an MPV award.

    MVP: Onuma(THA)

    Best spiker: Chatchu-On(THA)

    Best Server: Megawati(INA)

    Best Setter: MUtiara(INA)

    Best Blocker: Mayjoy Baron(PHI)

Best Libero: Nguyen Thi Kim Lien(VIE)

Don't know why there is no best OP award

Piyanut is past her prime, she has been rather lazy these past couple of years. I would love to see another Wanna type of libero who covers the floor and pass well, digs/saves every ball, reads and anticipate every ball that is coming her way etc. She is by far the best libero THA has ever had and one of the world's best during her time. I think if she was still in the game, she could probably out perform all the current THA liberos lol
