It was obvious he'll retire from NT, he has done it once already and returned only to play in Tokyo. He'll play in a club until early 40s, I guess, he's still among best players in the world.

i knew that this was his last olympic 😭
So far we see that not playing VNL was definitely not a smart move, although some people were praising and saying that this choice was genius...

I don't think that not playing in VNL was a factor in today's Italy loss tho, their chances got really small when it turned out that Zaytsev has been injured (or not fully ready from physical standpoint) since training camp, and I don't think playing in VNL would be helpful in this regard. Juantorena was in amazing shape, if Zaytsev was physically ready, they would have probably made it to the semifinals considering how close was this game against Argentina.
I think that Italy could have played at least 2 weekends with their starters. Not necessary the main squad in all the games, but some yes.
Actually, one of the reasons they skipped the VNL was to preserve the shape of some players (for example Giannelli, who had a small injury which showed up in the Olympics, he event didnt play a match cuz of that).
It didnt pay off at the end.
Giannelli got injured during a game against Canada.
The only difference that could have been made in comparison to reality is Blengini playing Vettori from the start, and not believing he can restore Zaytsev during a tournament after it was obvious that he's out of shape. Italy ended with Vettori every game of a tournament but game against Japan. Oh, and Balaso over Colaci, who was awful during this tournament.
Okay. Match about to start. Hope to see a high quality match. With the way France are picking up steam, they might cause some upset tonight.
France starts with Toniutti. Poland gonna abuse his blocking.
It seems that Poland didn't need to abuse Toniutti to rattle France.
Poland gets the 1st set 25-21
Start with Brizard & Patry.
Never knew Kurek could do some dig here. He really means it.
France is an insecure team ever since Leon played for Poland.
france now putting up some fight with more serve Pressure
France playing better with Brizzard.
Holy cow that fast pass from grebenikov to brizzard and dump Right afterward was something... pity it failed
Did I just hear the commentator refer to Ngapeth as "naughty boy"?
Brizzard
That may very well end up with tie break
