  • Isn’t Simge leading the Turkish league in passing percentage right now or did I read that wrong?

Yes, it is correct. She has 72% (perfect reception + reception) / all receptions. Overall she is better at defense than she is at reception, however it doesn't mean she is a bad receiver

Forgive me, this is something I'm trying to learn. How reception is scored.

Japan does this thing of (1 X excellent + .5 X "into the power good") / all receptions**. I assume "into the power good" is what you are calling "reception". Shinnabe usually wins it with about 70%

FIVB does excellent / all receptions ? No frills. Winners in the 30% range

Are you saying Turkey treats "perfect reception" the same as "reception" , adds them together and divides by total attempts? No half point stuff Japan does?

Quote from ** Japan's translated explanation

Serve receive success rate (%) = ((success number [excellent] x 100) + (success number [good] x 50)) ÷ number received

  • I agree that Gizem Örge is a great libero but in Guidetti's system, it is really difficult to see if a libero is good or bad. It is simply because any libero shines in his system. Look at Simge in the NT where she digs almost everything and her Eczacibasi performance, there is a big gap. Same with receiving. Somehow he takes any libero and makes them perform at their %150 lol. Kudos to Guidetti for that.

I am writing this because I think Ayca is not a spectacular libero and she does fine in his system. It was the same for Pinar last season, who looked like a solid libero until she went to Aydin and we saw that she is actually an ordinary libero. I get the same vibes from Bihter who has been a bad libero for many years and doing an incredible job in Yesilyurt this season...

When it comes to comparing Simge to other world's best, I love Castillo but when was the last time we saw watching her playing consistently? I would no longer add her to the list of best active liberos. For Gennaro, I don't think there is a big gap in their receiving/defense abilities but De Gennaro sets way better than Simge where she makes the cut between two. So I would say Simge is actually the Europe's second best libero, making her probably to top 5 in world.

Dataproject collects perfect receptions and reception and that sum actually represent positive reception and then divides with all reception, in general positive reception should represent all reception with sufficient height and up to 3 m of the net and 3 m of the setter position (zone 3 commonly use as setter reference position).

what is Gui’s system that allows the libero to perform better under him? This is a really interesting idea. I really wanna understand more. Is it by having a solid receiver next to the libero?

  • I think this Receiving Libero vs Defending Libero is just another indication of how limited players have become today. The Libero is already a limited player but now, they have been even more limited to being specialist at one skill. Before, Middles will receive and defend at the backrow. Outside Hitters can both receive and spike well. Nowadays, we have either an attacking MB or Blocking MB and an Attacking OH or Defending OH. It's rare to find players who excel at both, specially at the OH position.

Still, I'd put Simge at Top 3 along with De Gennaro and Castillo. I think she's the best Turkish Libero ever next to Gulden.

maybe because the game has changed? Serves are getting tougher, sets are getting faster. I dunno. But one thing i can agree with you when i watch the videos from the 80s & 90s, the excitement is different. Like everyone is on a role.

who do you guys think are the players that are good at both? Like good OH who can receive & spike well or MB who can hit and block well?

Game has changed. Serves are way stronger ofc reciving become worse.

And We don't need to talk how faster volleyball become...

I would go with Molten ball in international competition. Volleyball would become even more interesting.

    That's a good point.

For OH, I can only name a few. Robinson and Gabi. There are a lot more for MBs though: Eda, Thaisa, Rasic, Koroleva.

i think KYK & Logan Tom on their glory days are the best at that position. Mari did well on that department all through 2008. For MB I think Walewska was one of the greatest I have ever seen. I rewatched her old videos & am amazed at her connection with Fofao.

I would include Larson and Sokolova too! KYK was just amazing. She was the best. A legend. Unfortunately, her injuries have finally caught up to her and her scoring abilities went down. But she's still very useful because she can receive and defend well. This is where she outshines Zhu Ting.

Walewska, Liu Ya Nan, and Morozova where the last middles I can recall who do reception duties.

I wish I knew! What I can see is, based on my personal observations, liberos perform way better in this teams compared to their usual performance. He might be giving them clear area coverage, making them study opponents well and informing them where to stand for which attacker. I really don't know but it is definitely something that should be studied.

  • eve is in TUR? i remember crazy kwiek tried her as OPP before in the NT but it didn’t work well.

i don’t know how old she is but she joined the NT as a teenager, she’s been playing for a long time.

Yes, she plays in Turkey. PTT replaced Leyva with her but she is playing poorly so far. She seems out of shape and slow...

valeskinha, who played mostly as MB in her career, was still playing in BRA league last season, and she’d play as OPP for double-sub, but in one match she played as libero. people said she also used to be a receiving OH.

and all the cuban MBs received serve (torres, barros, carrillo).

That's true. When she played in Rio with Bernardinho she was still a receiving MB - covering Mari, Natália and Mihajlovic in different occasions. She also played as full-time OH for Novara and Galatasaray.

But if she played as OPP in double-sub, that was just a one-time thing. Most of the season she played in the starting six as MB.
