CEV Cup 2021

  • The teams are now known, which are participating in this competition, CEV announces here:

    https://www.cev.eu/Competition…ion.aspx?ID=1263&PID=2016

There are 23 teams on board now, certainly influenced at least partly due to Corona, with very few very weak teams this time. They will be attended by nine losers of CL qualification, where up to two good teams can come from, therefore we will have a full 32 teams table without bys:

Best team is supposed to be Monza, the only Italian team. Aside them relevant strength can be expected by the following too IMHO:

    from Germany: Dresden and Potsdam

    from Turkey: Galatasaray

    from Poland: Legionowo

    from Russia: Saratov

Also not to be underrated are the two teams each from Romania, Targoviste and Bacau, as the two French teams Béziers and Volero (Le Cannet).

The (potential) descendors from CL, which are the strongest, are either Lodz (LKS Commercecon, to be precise) or Stuttgart and likely also Minsk.

  • Analysis of the draw can't be completed yet, because the 100% win of Moscow against Budapest in CL qualification will affect not only CL, but also teams possibly descending into CEV Cup (here). So I restrict it for the teams already in the draw with high uncertainty, because even Moscow or Scandicci may go down herein:

top favourite Saugella MONZA has the upper quarter as easy one, i.e. will be for sure in the semis. Than things might become interesting for them: while no already drawn team is a threat for them, there are altogether three teams from CL coming down, but because they are just from round 1, only the loser of Stuttgart vs. Minsk will be there. Therefore final should be not too hard for them to get to, despite it is likely no easy semi.

The lower half proves more interesting altogether: the third quarter sees Proton SARATOV and the both French teams as Legionowo and Targoviste together, one should claim the semi final spot there, while the fourth quarter is the strongest and most risky: there are Galatasaray, the both German teams and all three second qualification round losers from CL, where at least one good team will be (in worst case Scandicci, Moscow, Stuttgart or Minsk, maybe even more than one of them).

  • Chimik used to be one of the most annoying opponents on the last 7/8 years of CEV/Challenge Cup. They were very consistent and good fighters. It seems they lost their magic. They already lost the Supercup final to Shara Venegas' team, Promotey.

  • OK Sip Šempeter, Tent Obrenovac, Vasas Obuda Budapest and Minchanka Minsk will play their 1/8 and respectively winners od that mathces also 1/4 matches in Obrenovac, Serbia.

    1/8 final (two matches)

    8.12.2020. and 9.12.2020.

    1. Tent - Šempeter

    2. Vasas - Minchanka

    1/4 final (one match)

    10.12.2020.

    winner 1 - winner 2

first quarter of the draw include Bekescsaba, Monza, Ub and Brno will play their 1/8 and 1/4 final matches in Monza.

  • Potsdam and Dresden sent a request to CEV to postpone the tournament in Istanbul due to the current regulations. Apparently Turkey requests a PCR test from anybody that wants to travel out of the country, which would mean that if anybody were tested positive there, they might have to stay in Turkey for 14 days :white:

  • I heard that one of monza rival,an hungarian quit the tournament so it will be a 3 teams round

  • the monza bubble is gonna be postponed to next year

They already have problems when 1 of teams quit

  • Volero quit the competition, they should play against beziers at Zagreb but they didn't want coz covid in that city was rising

So Beziers advance to QF,let's say that is very possible beziers qualificates on court, they were doing better

Covid in Zagreb reached peak before 1 month ago, now it is on "stable" numbers. Almost 50-60% less so pls Volero.

  • And Tent is the first semi finalist of CEV Cup 2020/21. Great succes for serbian club volleyball, the first one since 2010 and Crvena Zvezda in the final of CEV Cup.

TBH they were pretty lucky with the draw

  • really bad level of this competition

I said that maybe at semis it get better but it seems not

  • SC Potsdam withdraw from CEV Cup. They're currently in quarantine due to a positive case and can't train probably at least until next week, plus they don't want to take the risk of travelling to Turkey in the current situation with the current regulations.

Dresden, on the other hand, announced that they are going to travel to Turkey for the tournament.
