China NT 2021

  • Zhang Changning and Li Yingying can play OP so it's not a problem. China never had another consistent scorer besides Zhu but this VNL Zhang Changning and Li Yingying really improved. Can they play like this during Olympics? I'm more concerned with libero. MB backups are a mess since both Wang and Yang are pretty much the same. Both Lius are the same type of player so no need to bring them both. I prefer Wang Yuanyuan over Yang Hanyu and Liu Xiaotong for experience.

I think ZCN can be moved to opposite if GXY doesn’t play well, like in Rio. LYY at opposite hasn’t worked super well in the past but we shall see. She has certainly improved a lot.

For libero, true that WMJ is unstable, but would it be feasible to take Lin Li along as well?

Anyway, the team is at the Ningbo Beilun base for quaratined training. Who can you spot? (pictures from 我爱女排 weibo account)

    Assume roster:

OH: Zhu Ting, Zhang Changning, Li Yingying, (Liu Xiaotong)

MB: Yuan Xinyue, Yan Ni, (Wang Yuanyuan)

    S: Ding Xia, Yao Di

    OP: Gong Xiangyu

    L: Wang Mengjie

That leaves one more spot left so taking Lin Li is still possible since Li Yao is not really needed as backup OP. Three MBs should be enough. Then Lang Ping pulls a shocker and brings Ni Feifan. It seems Yao Di is always beside Zhu Ting.

From the 3 pics, spotted Yao, Zhu, Yuan, Yan, Liu XT, Lin, Ding, Li Yao, Yang, Li YY, Zhang...

Good girls, back in drilling mode again! There is simply no easy path to success! Fight! 加油!

“There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.”

  • Duo bundling strategy... therefore if you take Zhu you must also bring Yao along

Your roster seem good, with possibility of change in LXT... also have no idea, as well as the 12th spot.

What's the deadline for team to determine their roster?

Someone on the Korean NT thread said a commentator said July 5.

Don't know about deadline but Lang Ping will probably give us the final roster at the last minute.

Yes I heard July 5 too. But knowing them, we'll probably only know when the team is at the airport!

I am really surprised that LYY is actually playing better as OH. Normally attacking from right side is significantly easier for lefties:what:

I think ZCN should be the other OG since Gong is playing even better than she was in Rio. LYY should be used as a universal backup for both OH and Opp positions. there should be a second libero as defensive specialist in the case that they need to replace certain players in the backrow. At this point bringing 4th MB is not gonna be useful anyways.

Even some of the commentators we're saying that a lefty on the right is more easier which is why the angles Li YY finds from the left side is amazing. It's not something you see often so that makes her an extra plus to have on the team. Balkestein another lefty OH doesn't have the same angles as Li YY, but her role is a defensive outside hitter which different from Li plus there is a height difference between the two.

I think this has a lot to do with the fact that Li YY mostly played on the left as a youth player so as time went by she ultimately was able to find a comfortable swing to hit those deep angles and also why it's awkward when you see her hit from the right. It's not something she's used to, but the NT seems to have her trying it out more often.

It seems like in china, the most dominant attacker is pushed to play on the left side whereas in Europe mostly the most dominant attacker is assigned to play as opp from a young age. Maybe it is because in Chinese volleyball tradition, opp has never been the go-to-attacker

Yup, all the clubs are obsessed about developing outside hitters. I could see Gong not having a backup for a few years, good thing for the NT that she's young, healthy, and generally non-injury-prone.

Not only in China, it happens in all Asian teams. Nagaoka is the only one I can think of who’s more like the Opp in European / American teams.

Most of the Opp in Asian teams didn’t play as Opp originally, like Gong was actually a setter in youth team, Kurogo of Jpn was an OH, Kim Heejin of Kor plays as MB in clubs.

True. Same with Thai team as well

Kurogo has kind of always been an OP, much to my chagrin. She played high school style OP in High School, and lines up across from the setter with Toray. She did play OH in her limited time with the NT this cycle because, Shinnabe. It's easy to mistake her for an OP who used to be an OH because ... that's what she looks like

Yes, in my impression she hit on the left for most of the time in the past. I remember she also played as OH in Toray in the season they were the runner-up of V-league for the first time (should be 18/19?). But you must be right about her high school experience.

oh yeah! that's right. before Ishikawa showed up. And you know what else, that was the year she proved herself (to me anyway) as a closer, above Jana Kulan.

Li Ying Ying (just to keep on topic). sorry.

  • it's ok, the rules are more like FIVB's guidelines on mask usage/no outside contacts anyways.

What really interests me is the lefties hitting from the left and righties from the right thing. Seems pretty clear Li YY hits better from the left. Not many righties hit better from the right. Maybe one of the italians, I dunno. But not with the angles you speak of in reverse of LYY from the left. YOLO will show ya'll how it's done some day :super:
