Olympic Games 2020 - general thread

  • A little background:

Australians were heavy favorites to win a gold in 4x200m female relay --> they were so sure to win a gold so they decided to switch every swimmer from heats for finals to give a chance for gold for 8 swimmers (swimmers from heat swims get their medals as well) --> super-talented 17yo Mollie O'Callaghan improved her personal best by a second in a heat swim --> but Australia had to put Leah Neale (okay-ish swimmer) in relay for a final because they submitted her before games to swim in a relay, but she didn't swim in semifinals, so according to the rules she had to swim in the finals, and there was no place for O'Callaghan, who turned out to be over a second faster than her --> the race was a complete disaster, with Titmus and McKeon (two best swimmers, who started a relay for Aus) swimming 2-3 seconds slower than they were suppose to, and the weakest Australian (Neale) finished a relay, and she obviously was outperformed by Ledecky and the Chinese --> Neale swum 1.55.8, while O'Callaghan's result adjusted to different start was ~1.54.6 --> Australia lost by almost a second, because they didn't expect other countries to be that fast.

So: they didn't put their best team because they were so sure they'll win, their biggest stars disappointed badly, and dumb coaches put the slowest swimmer (Neale) on the last leg of a relay because they thought she'll have 4-5 seconds of advantage, while she wasn't even first at the start, and obviously she didn't deliver.

I'm so astonished that you can choke on so many levels. But I am also happy that it is just another example of consequences of underestimating your opponents. Legendary choke. The funniest part is that this is reaaaaaaally good OG for Australian swimming (5 golds already, with 3-4 more chances), and right now I'm seriously embarassed.

(sorry for those not caring about a swimming that I wrote such long post)

  • Kinda stinks for her. (well not really, she GOATed) but they probably dont take a swimmer like her into account

that would make sense, scheduling considerations would give priority to athletes competing in the same discipline rather than across and maybe it wasn't possible.

but yeah 2 golds in 2 hours, not bad. Her life is set :D

  • so many federations have had some #choices in the relays. (and sports overall. USA Gymnastics is messy)

americans were mad Dressel wasn't in the 4x200 (or whichever one they just missed the podium in). Some weren't happy Schmitt was in this 4x200, but that obviously worked out lol

  • Just want to share, a few days ago Philippines won it's 1st Gold Medal in the history of Olympics courtesy of Hidilyn Diaz(Weightlifting). 2 years ago, she posted an IG story asking if it's okay for her to asked private companies for sponsorship because clearly our government are not helping these athletes. They helped her eventually but it wasn't enough. She even got red-tagged before.

  • Just watched one of the most incredible games of table tennis between Fan Zhendong and Lin Yun-Ju. 4-3 with 7 very close sets.

I watched the whole game!! So chuffed FZD won, it was a fucking scare from Lin Yun Ju who I thought played exceptionally well, too! I am rooting for Chen Meng and FZD to win gold for TT 😊

My heart wants Ma long to win, but my brain says that FZD winning is better for the next generation.

  • won 11-9 in the 7th. wow. Ovtcharov is an worthy opponent!

I was on the edge of my seat, that was heart pumping! Both SF's on men today are worthy. The women's are an easy take both at 4-0

That last play was just awesome, Dima literally laying on the floor in disappointment after the rally, props to him tho, still an awesome fight. I thought for sure the dragon will sweep it 4-0 but I was wrong

  • Naomi have become too soft in my opinion. Even Nishikori fights with all he have even without having any chance against anyone. Not even booking a doubles partner to maximize medal contention is not smart after a long lay-off from competitive games.

I really don't know who is advising her lately but it's bad for her career.

Becoming a part-time tennis player at her age is not a good look.

  • Suni Lee wins gold!!

Where are my Brazilians at? Andrade gets silver!

I cried a lot. So emotional. She was great. Those two mistakes costed her the gold medal by 0.135, but we the Brazilians are still very happy :flower:

Where are my Brazilians at? Andrade gets silver!

We were praising Medina, then Italo Ferreira won... We were licking Flavia Saraiva's boot (sandals?) then Rebeca Andrade is the one who takes the medal... Everyone we are sleeping on are taking medals, let's go :rose:
