2021 FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship // Iran

  • Italy swept Brazil 3-0, really average game in general.

Weak performance by Canarinhos, so it looks that height isn’t everything: they played with three really tall spikers (204, 203, 203), but their receiving line was questionable for majority of the game, they look super slow in organizing an attack, and the only positive – not surprisingly – was Arthur, who has simply astonishing potential, not only he’s tall (I think he’s taller a bit than this 204 cm), but has big frame as well, so he’s not some skinny and tall youngster, he can develop into athletic monster with time. And their coach had some impact with not winning a single set, because they led 24-21 in a 1st set, and then they collapsed because of double-sub and Maicon’s error during a set point at 22-24. I don’t think they had any chances to win this game, they had a lead in a 1st set because Italian best player (Luca Porro) started really slowly, and Italy made several mistakes in spiking, but it wouldn’t look that one-sided if not this silly choke. There's a trend that these tall teams are better at U21 level than U19 level when they develop technically further, so I guess it may be a case as well here. Arthur should win them some important games tho.

If there’s some excuse for Brazil – although I don’t think they’ll be contending for a gold tbh after what I saw – is that Italy is decent, really, even if they played subpar game by their standards. At ECH, when they won a whole tournament, they had three very good players (Porro, Boninfante, Laurenzano), but also two short OH/OPP (Zoratti, Quaglizozi), who were basically non-factors (besides a final when Quagliozzi played well). This time they improved their roster with two really tall players (Penna, 205 cm tall OH, and Bovolenta, 202 cm tall OPP), so not only they have really good receiving line and setting for this age category, but also a really tall team. Penna and Bovolenta were 17/36 combined with good blocking, and that's an impact they were lacking at ECH from other spikers.

Porro with 16 points, Arthur with 20 points, both are great talents.

About other games, I took a look and my first impressions:

Argentina looks like typical Argentina: weak opp, short team, crafty, but short setter, two composed OHs without athleticism, great defense and reception, although besides ConDe I wasn’t too impressive.

I enjoyed the game between Thailand and Bulgaria, surprisingly, a lot. Bulgaria sent their best-best, really talented team with guys mentioned in an opening post – Alexander Nikolov and Georgi Tatarov. They’re coached by Martin Stoev, former HC of Bulgarian NT who won a medal at senior 2006 WCH, there’s also his son as starting OH. But Thailand … Thailand played really catchy volleyball, with two left handed spikers, nice setter, and middle playing slides frequently. Obviously, they didn’t have a chance, they’re too short and Bulgaria has really good team, but maybe they’ll show something nice in next games.

Germany defeated Cuba 3-0 and India outplayed Nigeria 3-1, but I didn’t see these games. Surprisingly, Czechia lost a set to Colombia. Guatemala withdrew due to COVID as well, so Iran got a walkover.

In an hour from now, Russia will play Belgium, the latter should play with F. Reggers, hyped a lot already.

I'll make some round-up post with stats from all games after the day is finished.

  • Yeah, Arthur is like 207cm. He could develop into a really, really great player indeed. Having scored 20 pts in his first game is already a good sign I think.

I don't have a lot of hopes for this team -- not because they're bad, but because I think this is possibly the first time they've played a tournament together, so it's gonna take some time to figure some things out, which is natural. Hopefully that happens by the time the round of 16 happens though as I'd like to see them advancing at least to the QFs. The European teams certainly have some advantage here having player their continental championships though.

  • Russia defeated Belgium 3-1 after hard-fought battle, Husky123 was correct in saying that Labinskii and Kirillov are two most promising players from this team, I enjoyed watching them both in those moments I watched this game. So it seems Russia can be at least fine in this age group as well, while expectedly Belgium can be a dangerous team, they had many chances to make it the tiebreak.

Yeah, and the MBs and libero are OK/good, but, on the other hand, both opposites are too bad (IMO, the weakest opposite of the last 6 Russian generations) and that's why I don't see Russia going to the Final. Maybe they could grab the bronze medal. This team is missing the opposite Kuleshov (2.12) that sadly got injured last season and is totally out of shape... Btw, he is the son of a former Russian volleyball player (one of the MBs in Athens 2004), meanwhile, the actual opposite is the son of one of the best basketball players in European history (Maria Stepanova) and maybe we found the reason why he is on the court.

  • Is the Russian setter Kirilov in anyway related to the setter Kirilova?

  • Some round-up notes:

    - Italy defeated Czech Republic 3-0, so they won't lose a set probably in a group stage, but they play below their level with weird lineup (Orioli is a better player than Penna IMHO), so they'll be really tested in QF by Bulgaria/Belgium

    - Brazil defeated Belarus and will play for 2nd spot with Czechs most probably, another great game by Arthur (14/23 in attack)

    - Alexander Nikolov was 25/30 (!!!) in attack against Russia, he's a real deal

    - Labinskii from Russia so far is the best player of the event, and Russia so far plays the best vball in this event

    - Argentina will win pool D

    - Thailand will make it to top16, awesome

    - Poland expectedly defeated Nigeria in their debut match

  • The crossover in semis is top B with top C, right? so, we'll see ITA-RUS there and it will probably be an early final.

It was this way always IIRC, but maybe something has changed due to COVID and a fact that pools A&B play in the one hall, and C&D in the other?

    https://en.volleyballworld.com…-2021/competition/formula

I don't understand this formula file at all. :gone:

Even if so, I don't think that Italy-Russia SF is a given, although Italy wins their games in comfortable way, they look so-so, and Russia looks really fine, but for how long their leader (Labinskii) can drag them as much as he's done in 1st and 2nd game? I'll wait for Iran-Poland to some first conclusions, but I don't think there's such dominant team as Russia or Italy two years ago.

Here are some articles about Labnskii and Lucas Conde from FIVB site if someone is interested:

I'm familiar with beach volleyball, but in a first moment I didn't recall Conde Senior in my mind, he's really good for his age (double-underager). So there's Conde's son, Aleksander Śliwka's brother, Paolo Porro's brother, Dante Boninfane's son, Vigor Bovolenta's son, Vlado Nikolov's son, and maybe Vlasov and Kirillov from Russia have something in common with Ilya and Irina, but I'm not familiar with that. There's also Bergmann's brother as OPP in Brazilian team. After all, volleyball is a family sport. :)

  • Surprisingly for me was the easy victory of Bulgaria over Belgium. Vlado Nikolov's son follows his father with sure steps, and can even surpass him! Sometimes he uses his way of serving, with his legs back and his tongue sticking out 😋😀

  • It was this way always IIRC, but maybe something has changed due to COVID and a fact that pools A&B play in the one hall, and C&D in the other?

there is no special reason for that, those two halls are something like 5 minutes away from each other.

I don't understand this formula file at all. :gone:

Looking at the previous editions, in the round of 16, the cross has always been A vs. B and C vs. D: A1xB4, A2xB3, A3xB2, A4xB1, C1xD4, etc.

I think the host decides in the QF the pool they will cross with. Usually, the cross is A vs. D and B vs. C, but the host could decide A vs. C or A vs. B.

  • Boring day:

    - Poland was suprisingly good against India, I'd not overestimate this game, but they certainly looked better than Iran against same opponent

    - group B is a mess: on paper, it's decent (Italy - European champs, Czech Republic - European vice-champs, Brazil, Belarus that is decent in youth categories from time to time): in reality, all of these teams but Italy are messy, and Italy plays so-so as well

    - I feel sorry for Colombia: first, they had chances to make it to a tiebreak against Czech Republic, then, it was 1-2 and 24-24 against Brazil, yet they didn't win a point in both cases; Brazil without well-playing Arthur is a mess;

    - I love Nikolov-Tatarov duo, they have both strong ''portability'' to the senior volleyball, there's a reason why both have already played as starters in senior Bulgarian league, future of Bulgarian volleyball with Karyagin, Asparukhov, Nikolov and Tatarov is certainly bright, I'd not be suprised if Russia-Bulgaria is a semifinal here;

    - Argentina for sure wins pool D

    - the question marks are: Poland vs Iran for a 1st place, Brazil-Czech Republic for a 2nd place, Colombia-Belarus for a 4th place, Germany-Egypt for a 2nd place, I suppose

    Day 3:

    Group A:

  • Yeah, Arthur is like 207cm. He could develop into a really, really great player indeed. Having scored 20 pts in his first game is already a good sign I think.

was Julia Bergmann's brother good in the match? Lukas, Arthur, Carlos and Samuel made me watch the U19 Brazilians

  • Thai people are so obsessed about volleyball, today's game between Thailand and Russia was watched by 55k people live at some point, while in most cases the audience for other games is 5 times smaller at best, even game between Thailand and Cameroon was already watched 450k times, while the most watched non-Thailand game is at 170k. Insane, we're talking about group phase of Boys' U19 WCH. :P

But besides popularity, this Thai team plays really well, despite their limitations they put up some serious fight against Russia and Bulgaria, and will advance to 1/16.

    Good for them.

  • I enjoy Thailand's game. They don't have height, but sure have some skills.

Just my opinion, but had they played like today on their first game against Bulgaria, they might have taken some sets or even beat them. Bulgaria was making lots of service and other errors. Thailand's could have capitalized on that.
