Kurogo was considered a leader (albeit not captain) going into 2020-2021 Olympics, but unlike high school where she was a captain and ace at Shimokitazawa-Seitoku, the international game is a very different beast. Taller opponents playing in more difficult leagues (I would put Japan around 6th-8th best pro league in the world).
Ishikawa knew how to play as the non-focus on offense in high school and has transferred that easily to pro and and national team. Kurogo is also kind of protected as well with Kulan being a big portion of Toray’s offense. However, in the national team that protection was taken away with Koga’s injury in the Tokyo games. Kurogo could not deliver on unreasonable expectations by the Japanese public. Kurogo in high school was probably an unreasonable captain to her teammates (from video seen on YouTube about her) and if that type of belief of failure is not an option, would have caused significant mental harm with the Tokyo results.
as a contrast Nagaoka basically was in tears after missing two years through injury just by being in a game after being at the top level of the national team and making it to the Italian league. Nagaoka’s mind set changed because of the injury.
Hopefully for Kurogo, I hope she has changed her view of her expectations for herself, cause Right now Japan is really playing well. I don’t if she would add or subtract from the team, but Manabe has his preferred way of play, which is working without her. If she comes back into the team in the future, I hope her expectations are more level loaded.
