China NT 2022

I know they’re ranked higher than Turkey, but the win was still unexpected....

Now I feel bad about all the criticisms I made after their first match.

    :what:

Anyway, I feel there’s still room for improvement.....they missed too many easy pick ups and didn’t defend the Turkish MB’s attack through the middle, well enough.

    加油 !

  • i'd have been happy with a 1-3

  • Thoughts after the win against Turkey?

    Mine are:

L: WWY has improved and gained confidence. Definitely areas of improvement to be had, but overall a decent showing today. I’m still waiting for NFF though

    OH:

LYY - is so good, and her only weak spot of her game is her reception a la young Zhu Ting… A few more errors than usual but nothing too shocking

JY - someone said she’s supposed to be a defensive OH which is why her attacks are meager but… not impressed. She did better than Game 1 for sure, and am happy to see her gain confidence, but her vertical is not explosive enough (imho) and she makes TOO MANY ERRORS which cancel her already 寥寥无几 attacks looool

WYL - stable reception. Now I see why she was selected to the team

    MB:

Strong and stable bloc as per last game

    OPP:

As Chinese social media says, this house cannot survive without Gong. She’s got it all, digging like a libero, great sets when needed, stable reception, explosive kills…. is it just me or is she getting BETTER????

S: Diao did okay. Still slow but her second touch kills were nice and she is obviously trying.

Very surprised by the outcome. I was convinced they would be wiped out 3-0. I think a lot of it was the sheer number of errors Turkey had, and they seemed to have given up half way… excited to see China v Italy next!

  • The problem with the middles is that Li Yanlong is supposedly the coach for this specific area. Under his coaching in Shandong Yang Hanyu's progress has been slow and he would always rotate between Zhang Qian, Sun Ruhan, Cao Tingting, and Guo Huizhen never finding a consistent starter.

  • +1 on waiting for NFF.

for OH, LYY is good, enough said. Don't really pay attention to the others because Zhu and Zhang will return. Still, it's better to have other options, and maybe WYL has something to contribute. but she was known to be a troublemaker on her provincial team which is why i didn't like her selection.

MB: YXY can be faster in closing the block. Yan Ni is still missed.

Opp: GXY has improved I think.

In general I think new players should be tried, not B team members from last cycle.

  • In a way, injuries of Zhu and zhang were blessing for LYY to show her true capabilities. She showed that she could be a leader and carry her team. I think if she improves her reception just like Zhu did, she could be the starter OH instead of Zhang, whose offense seems to be subpar recently

Also versality of Gong amazes me. She is not a Egonu or Boskovic type Opp but she has a variety in her offense and her defense is insanely good for an Opp. Indeed she might be the best defending Opp among active players.

I'm not convinced with new setter. Dia can still play in Paris right, so what's the point for pushing the new setter? I don't think she is an upgrade to Yao di

  • I think the lower height and quicker sets by DLY suits GXY’s quick and mobile spiking style as she’s less likely to be blocked by hitting cross court, down the line and off the hands!!!
This way she can be as effective as the taller opposites like Eganou and Boskovic!

    👍👍👍

I can’t figure out Li Yanlong, on the one hand he seems like a nice fella, mild mannered and caring, never scolding the girls, but as a coach he hasn’t done a good job, I feel. Maybe he’s been paying more attention to the pleasant looking players like Du Qingqing :aww:

If he is, he’d better watch out because I have my eyes on her also ! :cheesy:

    :lol::lol::lol:

  • Zhu partnering LYY and GXY as OP.....a mouth watering prospect :cheesy:

it's always those mild-mannered guys that get them ;)

    All good points!

The setter Diao had an up and down match against Netherlands, while this match with Turkey she was much better distributing the offense. It seems the head coach Cai Bin is starting her to catch her up to game speed with experience. Lang Ping's setters were Ding Xia and Yao Di which she rotated between. Diao was there, but used only so often. Cai Bin has been Diao's coach in Jiangsu for awhile now so there's possibility of favoritism, but I think having her play out these matches is good in the case that Yao Di isn't able to return. Yao Di is recovering from injuries so there's likely worry that she may not be able to return to her former level or maybe even return at all.

Oh I didn't know about Yao's injury. What kind of injury? Is it serious? It is a pity that Chinese players get severe injuries at early stages in their career and had to retire younger than their European peers

She has been suffering from serious leg injury for a couple of years now. On an interview, she stated that she has to take pain relievers every time she plays (for Tianjin at CVL). When the rumors of her being removed by Cai Bin (as she’s not part of the training list for VNL) spread, she came forward and explained that she personally requested leave due to injury.

  • Thoughts after the win against Italy?

Overall sluggish game and the players’ fatigue is quite obvious, especially on GXY, WYY, YXY & LYY’s end.

    L:

Finally got to see NFF, but limited court time. WWY did not do so well today. Slow reaction times and mediocre ball control imho.

    OH:

JY - forgot about her a minute after she was subbed out so… meh?
LYY - visibly tired. Please dont make her the next workhorse after ZT. Why is there no depth in the whole of China 😩

WYL - stable reception again and good ball control overall. Absolutely hopeless at killing the ball

    MB:

Poor performance from WYY & YXY. Both looked tired, lackluster blocks and very few clean attacks. Low energy. I want to see ZYX and even YHY/GY. Not enough pressure from the serving line.

    OPP:

Poor GXY. Gave it her all yesterday at the expense of today… still decent. Maybe she should have a rest tomorrow for us to see MYW?

    S:

DLY - lackluster sets but decent defense

Ding - also not at her best, connection with the middle was not there today.

Overall the game was meh. Seemed like the adrenaline ran out in Set 2 and they subsisted on Italy’s errors (which gifted them a whole set and more). Perhaps it’s smart - conserving energy and all? - but it is concerning to me that they have virtually no depth especially in the L, S & OP positions.

  • yeah i felt after set 1 china got bored...

  • Yeah this match was all over the place, not one I would want to watch a replay of.

Cai Bin definitely needs to rotate the middles around, why else did he bring three more if they aren't going to even play. He could've brought an extra OH or OPP instead. Same goes with bringing Cai Yaqian. Maybe let one of Ding/Diao rest tomorrow and have Cai as the other setter?

The game against Thailand should be a good one. I know they lost today against Belgium (didn't see that match), but they still need to keep their guard up. This generation of Chatchu-on, Ajcharaporn, and Pimpichaya has got some fire in them and quite a few of their starters have international experience playing abroad.

I do have a feeling Pornpun is going to be fooling which ever middles start tomorrow though. lol

  • In the earlier match against Turkey there was maximum crowd participation and noise. This energised both teams....who responded with more attacking play and strong defending. Players were exhausted .... physically and emotionally. But it was entertaining and fun to watch.

The match against Italy had a different feel to it. The atmosphere was more subdued....players looked lethargic, play was scrappy and there were more enforced errors.

Also, the earlier match was of more significance, I feel, as it was against a full strength Turkish side, compared to an Italian side missing most of their star players

    😐
