China NT 2022

  • not sure where to ask this (pls let me know if off topic and will delete the comment) but thought Chinatown here would be best to start this discussion…. for longtime fans of the sport, how would you say China NT’s style of play or favored players has changed in the past 20 years?

I was watching the Athens 2004 final (triggered by Julian Chow ‘s shared newspaper clipping!) and was struck by how much they utilized the middle, and just how explosive/fearless the players were. Maybe it’s just hindsight (and the slow frame rate/poor quality of video), but nowadays, every time the girls walk on court, they look so frail. And the MBs today just do not have the same confidence I felt the MBs of yonder had… I mean, look at the MBs during the last VNL. With that in mind and comparing with the Athens 2004 team. Um…

anyway, keen to hear all your thoughts. I’ve only been following the sport more closely post 2012, so I want to hear from the more knowledgeable!

I think the NT coaches have preferred taller players in recent years. Bigger players are generally not as mobile and quick and are less adept at fast attack and combination plays.....which the 2004 team used to overcome their much bigger opponents. The team also had several outstanding players, eg. setter Feng Kun, MB Liu Yanan, and OP Zhou Suhong to name a few. Zhou is 5’11” yet she is strong at hitting and blocking and has an effective jump serve. In the gold medal match against Russia, she faced 6’8” Gamova across the net, but she was undaunted.

Some of our players do indeed look weak and some muscle would help but I think it is ok for them to be slim but still strong. Just look at Egonu and Turkish player, Boz ! I’ve seen these two in real life and they look even slimmer than when they appear online or on tv.

We used to have a big and strong looking player....Wang Yimei ! Don’t know if you remember her :cheesy:

  • I have no energy to translate (mostly because it's very long, lol), but to summarize, ZCN is 99.99% out of WCH 2022.

    summarize:

    * I [ZCN] can function like a normal person, but not as a pro athlete

    * I don't think I can be at NT level, whether it is physical or mental

I rmb Wang, but I’d say she was a little bit more heavy set - I also do think we cannot compare us Asians vs Egonu 😂 studies have shown that Asian females have the lowest percentage of musculoskeletal mass across ethnic groups, and it’s obvious in the longevity of their sporting career. Either way, if the NT continues to go for height=superior, I guess we’ll be stuck with more WYY/YHY type players for the foreseeable future.

  • Well, I hope Cai Bin has a plan C against Italy, Japan, Brazil, etc.

Hopefully one that involves Wang Yunlu on the bench.

i think a single win during the pool stages = success. I wonder what goal Cai will set for the team. Beating Japan and Brazil with this team??? Ummmm

(also I think we can p much guarantee that Wang Yunlu is going to show up 😂 锻炼新人 rmb?)

  • promising, but also thumbs down to WYL and JY’s inclusion. Since they are definitely not going to get very far this WCH, was hoping we’d see zhuang yu Shan instead of these two clowns.

VERY excited to see Wang Yifan & Wu Mengjie though!!

  • Cai Bin doesn't even need a wide roster and the rest of the bench will just play tourist, we know he'll be using the same VNL lineup for all of WCH. The only change we might see is Wang Mengjie getting the starting role.

    S: Diao

    OPP: Gong

    OH: LYY, Wang Yunlu/Jin Ye

    MB: Yuan, Wang YY

    L: Wang Mengjie?

  • to be honest I am keen to see WMJ bounce back from all the hate… VNL has shown that she is still the top libero in China atm, so I’m keen to see her growth haha

WMJ is a good libero, but I feel like she succumbed to the psychological pressure.

Hoping both her and Yuan can get out of it.

seeing that some players in the AVC cup roster are also rumoured to be in the WCH roster, I’m hoping that they really make an impact in AVC, so that they’re be taken seriously and not just play tourist... :|

But with you know who, we’ll never know....or we’ll know for sure ||

I seen a rumor that Thailand's A Team might be playing in AVC so it'll be tough for this mixed young squad. But they need to grow and gain experience at some point.

  • I think Thailand will win this tournament

In the history, China Team B won Thai Team A twice in 2016 and 2018 AVC Cup. However, this year's China Team B might only be better than the one in 2017 ACH and worse than the one in 2019 ACH ...

....they are sending their top team minus Acharaporn (slight injury) and MB Thatdao (injured during VNL).

Yes, hopefully, our young squad can take something away from this tournament.

It’ll be great if they win, if not I’ll be happy if they give a good account of themselves
