4th place Higashi Kyushu Ryucoku Takashi (Oita), 28 votes

  • It's ridiculous how much better the production values are for these HIGH SCHOOL matches than anything JVL/VTV can do, including the "prestigious"(?) Empress' Cup--which is a co-JVA

AND THEY ARE FREE (unfortunately vpn needed)

Proper floor, good lighting, proper frame rate, professional announcers, good sound overall, good camera work, good zoomers ... and they are playing at least three matches in the room so that excuse doesn't work. JVL/VTV have no shame

Really enjoying the Shiojiri v Fukui Takasaki match. Even though Shiojiri crushed the first set , Fukui Takasaki seems pretty good as well

  • Coach Lovebunny is on the air. A little surprising? he just returned and took over the team

  • The team playing against Higashi, Fujimi, is engaging in some serious middle blocker offense. Don't see that much at all in HS. They also have a tall-ish , maybe Chinese , OH doing pretty well

Meanwhile Higashi is still doing those whirlybird moves after scoring a point. Tired of those. Their Russian (I think) 184 MB looks a little out of place doing it

Higashi OH #5 Koyuki Oritate (?) is probably going to College or she's have been drafted by someone by now

  • You can spot the imports a mile away here. They have their hair in a bun or ponytail :rolll:

  • There's a lot more middle blocker offense going on here than I'm used to. A lot of it is those 45 degree angle slides to 2 that YOLO used to do, and a lot of medium height sets to the MB in 3 for a quickie, and some normal HS MB hitting as OP from 2 but I'm enjoying it

Furukawa's 2nd year 195cm DOM MB has grown into her body a lot this past year. She was almost feeble a year ago. She's getting a lot of blocks and seems to hit the ball pretty well, even without jumping much

I forget who just played Higashi :P but their MBs reminded me a lot of the Fukasawa twin MB

  • My Kyoei Gakuen girls are killing it :rose:

OH #4 Arina Tsutsumi , who was part of my favorite HS squad ever as a freshman, is super punchy, and a back attacking mofo. She must also be going to college or she would have been drafted. And they have a 2nd year MB who's a HULK SMASHING machine. I'll have to figure out what her name is

I can't believe all the excellent middle blocker work going on here tonight

Another thing , it seems to me , is all the public schools have baggy uniforms with sleeves. Gym outfits. Poor girls

  • This is close to a middle blocker extravaganza! It's stunning. Seems like the level of volleyball this year is up. Maybe it's just that the coverage is so good. The energy of these games is non-stop forward momentum. And they do it without any galloping merry-go-round nonsense music

I'm seeing a lot of players I look forward to seeing again

  • Any guesses on how you'd translate this girl's name: 馬崎七星

    Mazaki Seven Stars

    Nansei Uzaki

I might go with : Nana Umazaki because ... I dunno

  • Shintoku Girls is my Cinderella Team of the night so far :rose: I think they are fairly new to this and have never gotten past the second round. Overall punchiest team of the night. Don't know any of them

  • This Nara Bunka team is fun. Their setter is throwing Sietoku style to the left and then super fast and low reverse sets right into the pocket for her OP. And the OP is putting them away

  • The team playing against Higashi, Fujimi, is engaging in some serious middle blocker offense. Don't see that much at all in HS. They also have a tall-ish , maybe Chinese , OH doing pretty well

Their other OH (the captain I think?) was also doing pretty well. The tall-ish OH had some good hits at the beginning of each set, then disappeared :(

Losers all go home crying ;(

There was some very fine volleyball in that first round. The seeded teams will enter today

I couldn't watch them all but flopped around landing on what looked the most fun and stayed there. These four teams were my favorite. I hope they continue winning:

    • Nara Bunka
    • Shintoku Girls
    • Kyoei Gakuen
    • Shiojiri
  • You should try watching without using a VPN, it's not geoblocked (for the moment)

Pretty cool that the VODs seem not to need a vpn, but the live streams did
