  • It's sad that Shimokitazawa Seitoku didn't qualify for this Championship Round. Their Coach, Yoshiki Ogawa, who has coached the team for 42 years announced his retirement this year. It would have been nice for him and his team to have a chance to at least compete in the biggest event as his swan song

Oh no. No Seitoku? I was looking forward to watching them!

  • Oh no. No Seitoku? I was looking forward to watching them!

It's hard to follow exactly what happened. They were doing well this year through the "Inter-High" and "National-something-or-other".

Article talks about moving 184cm Airi Furukawa from MB to OH after the Inter-High, and starting three freshmen going into the Haruko Qualifiers. I guess that didn't work out :white:

3 out of these 4 schools Qualified:

    semi-finals

Bunkyo Gakuin University Women's High School 2-1 Shimokitazawa Seitoku High School

    (25-23, 15-25, 25-20)

Hachioji Practical High School 2-0 Kyoei Gakuen High School

    (25-11, 25-12)

    final

Hachioji Practice High School 2-0 Bunkyo Gakuin University Women's High School

    (25-19, 28-26)

    3rd place match

Kyoei Gakuen High School 2-0 Shimokitazawa Shigenori High School

    (26-24, 20-25, 25-20)

  • The Finals will be on Volleyballworld TV / VBTV!:super:

    What?

  • Probably with no English commentary but it's better than Sports Bull!

The HS coverage has always been really good, much better than any V.League stuff, especially the Final. I'm not sure but I bet VBTV will simply re-route the Fuji TV feed. They always have good announcers too, professionals :) unlike V.League stuff :rolll:

    Get ready for :box:

  • The Three Big High School Tournaments each year are:

    • All-Japan Inter-High School Athletic Meet (Summer)
    • National Sports Festival (Autumn)
    • All Japan High School Championship (Spring High, Haruko, this, the big kahuna, The Final Walnut)

    Results so far this year:

    2022 Inter-High (July 2022)

    1. Kinrankai
    2. Furukawa Gakuen
    3. Shimokitazawa Seitoku
    4. Hachiojijissen

2022 National Sports Festival (October 2022)

    1. Miyagi (Furukawa Gakuen)
    2. Okayama (Shijitsu)
    3. Osaka (Selected) Kinrankai mostly
    4. Tokyo (Shimokitazawa Seitoku)

    --------

    Last Year's Haruko (January 2022):

    1. Shujitsu
    2. Furukawa Gakuen
    3. Kinrankai
    4. Shimokitazawa Seitoku

    ----------

The National Sports Festival is that thing where it's Prefectural and the Prefecture can send an established team or a "selection" team. They have separate "Adult" and "Young" competitions. PFU+ won the adult version. They had a Uni girl added to the PFU team. Osaka added a player or two to the Kinrankai HS girls

One can find microcosm empathy with Euro-complainers when they complain about inferior teams from other parts of the world landing qualifying spots in International Competitions while certain Euro teams who don't qualify are superior. In other words: Is Seitoku's B Team better than any team from Okinawa? Yep. But it is what it is

As mentioned in a post above, Tokyo gets three spots in this tournament. Seitoku came in fourth at the Tokyo Qualifier :(

  • There are 20 matches today. That means 12 teams are seeded or whatever and jump in at Round 2 tomorrow. I get that the Top 4 teams from last year (with Hachio-jissen replacing Seitoku for "Tokyo", I guess) are seeded but the other 8 teams seem like random nobody teams ?(

A couple matches of interest today (one of the first and one of the last) may be:

Higashi Kyushu Ryukoku :box: Shiojiri (9:15 jst)

Shinai Girls :box: Omi Brotherhood (17:05 jst)

It's possible Coach LoveBunny and his Higashi crew get knocked out in the First Round this year, funny bracket :white:

Shinai Girls (Sarina Koga's alma mater) has that southpaw middle blocker , Ayumu Harashima , who just signed with Sarina's current team

A few other teams of interest are Kyoei Gakuen, Kyushu Bunka, Bunkyo Gakuin, Shintoku, and maybe Kyoto Tachibana (Yukiko Wada's alma mater)

I was thinking this might finally be Hachio-Jissen's year to make it back to the top (they have big players), and was anticipating a Kinrankai :box: Hachio Final until volleyb pointed out that the bracket has them meeting in the Semifinals

  • btw - I feel like Sportsbull is being a little ambiguous about whether or not all these matches are going to be streamed live for free

Live distribution of all 102 games of the national tournament that will start on January 4, 2023 (Wednesday)!

Of these, the semi-finals will be distributed live for free, and the finals will be distributed live for a fee.

Last year they said very explicitly that all matches (except the Final) would be streamed live for free AND that they would be available VOD until 9:00am the morning after the match and then go behind the paywall

I guess we find out in a few hours

That window of free VOD is super important to me. When there are a thousand matches on all at once I would take the opportunity to download the ones I couldn't watch. Once they are paywalled that's not possible. I don't do highlight videos :wall:

For example the first three matches today, all at 9:15:

    Kyoei Gakuen

    v

    Morioka Seio

    Higashi Kyushu Ryukoku

    v

    Shiojiri

    Kyushu Bunka

    v

    Yokohama Hayato

I want to watch all of those :white:

  • The Opening ceremony is geo-blocked for me and I can't get it to play with a free browser vpn

    https://sportsbull.jp/live/haruko-opening-2023/

Hey wargirls didn't you find a way around geo-blocking last year ... by going to somewhere else?

  • Fujimi High School has withdrawn due to covid :( Matsuyama gets a BYE

    January 4, 2023 (Wednesday) E Court 4th match
Women's 1st round Shizuoka Prefecture Fujimi High School vs. Matsuyama Shinonome High School

  • I couldn't get it to work without changing vpn to JPN.

I used Japan in my vpn to no avail :white:

Not getting any matches to show up yet , vpn or not, Are you?

  • Can see the Higashi match with vpn

They are getting clobbered by Shiojiri 14–21. I was worried about this one :|
