Germany - VBL 1. Bundesliga 2023/24

  • Magdalena Gryka joins TSV Georgi Allianz in 3rd league :| It's a shame, for example right now she could have been useful for Dresden as 2nd setter as long as Straube is injured...

It's a shame, of course, but also understandable. She seems to have only started a new job in Stuttgart at the beginning of the year. It's certainly difficult to suddenly say, okay, I'll play professional volleyball again. Nevertheless, I have the question: Where did you get the information? She is not yet registered on dvv-ligen.

Paywalled, but the preview via Google revealed that Gryka signed there.

  • I'm posting it here because we don't have a new national team post yet, but I didn't want to create one for this news.

From a German perspective, there was a surprising cut in the PVF, which could also affect the national team. Vanessa Agbortabi did not make it into the final squad of her PVF team Orlando Valkyries. Now the question arises as to what she will do now and whether she will find a replacement club so quickly.

Oh...they cut out players before the start? So she needs a new club now?

  • Oh...they cut out players before the start? So she needs a new club now?

Yes, the PVF uses the “normal” American system, like in ice hockey, basketball and American football. And that's why the teams operate with a fairly large squad in the pre-season, which in the case of the PVF was just a training camp or something, and then have to drastically reduce the squad before the season. In the case of the PVF, the squad is only allowed to have 14 players. And unfortunately Vanessa didn't make it into this squad, which was very surprising.

If she doesn't just want to sit at home now, then she would need a new club. I don't know whether a trade (change) within the PVF would be possible.

Where did you find out about the cut players? I still see a 20 people roster here: https://pvf.volleystation.com/teams/2104829-ORL/

  • So basically she quit her contract with the Greek team or rather signed there only for half a season just to be without team now? That's quite bitter :gone: She would have been a better option for Schwerin than Fuchs and Schut but now it's too late. Maybe Vilsbiburg will make her an offer but I doubt they can offer good money...

  • I think other teams might get her bcz Yossiana was put as waived then claimed by Atlanta next day. This could be the case or not

The only difference is that Vanessa falls under the foreigner regulations. That's why it's not as easy for her as it is for Yossiana. For Vanessa, only Columbus would be an option because with Schlegel they only has one player who falls under the foreigner regulations.

  • Is she a middle or a opposite? The transfer news says opposite, but she's listed as middle on volleybox :/

She can play both positions, this season in Neuwied she more often played as OPP but they play a somewhat unusual system where in some rotations the OPP attacks through the middle and one MB attacks from pos.4 in one rotation. IMO Broekstra is better as MB but on neither position has the level to play in A2.

The threat of SC Potsdam going bankrupt was successful

With its many offerings, SC Potsdam is systemically relevant as the largest sports club in Brandenburg. But if he is now saved with tax money, there must be consequences: a debate about prestige projects like the Champions League, for example.

As the largest sports club in Brandenburg, SC Potsdam is “systemically relevant,” say those responsible. There is no way around a rescue without endangering the popular sports offerings and even the youth work of an entire district in Kirchsteigfeld. Urban societies have to bite the bullet, no matter what the cost! Or?

The city corporation is supposed to raise 350,000 euros within a few days, but the discussion about this is not taking place publicly - and some of the arguments in the threatening backdrop are not even valid. For example, the funding for the Luftschiffhafen sports park would also flow if the top athletes compete there under the flag of another club.

The quick action by club president Andreas Klemund and mayor Mike Schubert (SPD) primarily serves to save the current volleyball Bundesliga season; the rest of the club is caught up, but should not be included. Once this acute emergency has been overcome by the city's societies, a public discussion must take place about what SC Potsdam should achieve in the future.

Should public utilities and co. pay for the expensive flagship of the Bundesliga and Champions League for women's volleyball? Or should the focus be on offerings for people from daycare to retirement age? This question of which part of the SC offer is actually systemically relevant should be debated from now on, because at some point the tax office will receive the bill for the fraud scandal - and if financial help is needed again, the city corporation cannot make a headlong decision, but rather a well-considered one why SC Potsdam is worth so much to her.

  • Laura Broekstra from Neuwied to Macerata (A2) source

That's wild :what::white::gone: Certainly she's been one of Neuwied's better players, but going to Italy even if it's only A2 is really unexpected :S

Macerata recently fired Saja for no reason, at least for me, considering they were in the lead of Pool B and looking quite good for the promotion, so I guess the transfer fits just right.
