2023 Junior Events: FIVB U21 & U19 WCH and U17 ECH

  • people talk about Arthur and Samuel from Brazil but the real gem for me is Maicon. He's like 2.05 m and every attack is a sure point. He's gonna be a monster

    He is taller

  • lol the smurfs are handing out the giants block after block. The polished brazilian attacking technique of old times is nowhere to be seen.

  • Watched IRA-BUL game for 3 sets. The Bulgarian team is highly relying on Nikolov. He took more than half of the passing duty. Of course the service targeted him. But if the other OH and libero could help him a bit more on reception, he would contribute more on the attacking. But it seems like impossible.

  • Didn’t expect that lost for Brazil. This generation has a lot of good names.

  • Two consecutive top 4 finishes with fairly average generations, amazing work :white:

I'm starting to like our libero at least.

Diaz, libero and Salazar are all decent, I wish Gomez would be switched to OH position as well, I know he received a bit in Liga Argentina based on stats, but he's too short to make a career as an opposite.

What a surprise: I don't know when Samuel specifically got injured, but he was horrendous since the beginning of the tournament - what a disappointing tournament for Brazil after all, I like only Arthur, Maicon and Thierry from this team based on what I've seen this week: Samuel was a huge disappointment, libero and setters were so average and Bergmann has only a famous name, awful last two games.

Considering Argentina outplayed Brazil in '97 generation from what I remember (they won a silver medal at U19 event while Brazil didn't win anything at U19 nor U21 tournaments), in '01 as well, in '05 they swept Brazil in South American U18 Champs and now they defeated Brazil in '03-04 generation as well. Brazil youth system is in shambles, even if they have better pro perspectives due to size. Still, fantastic job by Argentina in constantly outplaying Brazil.

  • semifinal : Italy vs Bulgaria Iran vs Argentina :super::super:

It's gonna be Bovolenta vs Nikolov , I think Iran is above all seeing how they played in the last few days

They are. I'd be happy if we reach the finals given that this team is missing Porro.

I dont wanna start anything but honestly I have my doubts the Iranians are truly U21. I mean you look at the Argentinians and Italians and you could totally see their baby faces they do look 19-20 and even younger but Iranians look like full ass grown-ups (24-26) haha

This is a case every two years - I remember this final by '99 generation (Lavia, Recine, Gamba) against Esfandiar, Yali and Sharifi in 2019, it was the same.

I don't think they do any age fixing, but I do believe their pro projection is way worse due to fact they are physically matured in comparison to other teams. They dominated WCH U19 and U21 in '99-00 generation and none of these players make any impact as a pro yet. Either way, junior results aren't the most important.

i have the same impression. Not about how they look in the face but rather their athleticism and physical status seems very matured. Their vertical jump, the speed , the power are almost the senior team level.

Yeap. We have 2 (or maybe 3 if we include Boninfante) player with great projection to the senior NT, especially Bovolenta. So that's more than enough for me.

Anyways, I really hope that Bovolenta develops in a upward trajectory and above all healthy. I read that his father's condition sometimes is inherited so let's hope that's not the case.

I don't know if in starting roles, but Laurenzano, Porro and Bovolenta are sure NT players in the future, Laurenzano and Bovolenta should have been already in VNL while Porro isn't any worse than Recine, I assume.

Boninfante has decent upside, but his competition is ridiculous (Giannelli, Sbertoli, Porro) and I wonder if he can speed up his setting, because he's too short to be Brizard-like setter and worse setting-wise than Porro in his age. He has decent connection with the middles and nice pos 2/1 setting skills, but his left wing sets are so mediocre.

Orioli can be a surprise out of this group - he's so boyish physically, but technically he's really well rounded and actually was much better in Ravenna than so far during this event. If he gets some muscles and athleticism, he can very good. I kinda liked Penna (2004), but he's stayed for too long in these crappy Serie B competitions and didn't make any progress, I hope Civitanova will run Cremoni's (2007) development much better, he's a physical freak for his age.

Staforini has nice upside as well, but is a bit unlucky to have Laurenzano in his age category, fortunately he'll get some playing time in A2. Colombo was great in Diavoli Rosa in junior competitions as well, but he's also a victim of tough competition on his position, but here as well I wouldn't be surprised if he makes A1-career considering how good Gaggini was in Verona last year while on junior level he's never been in contention for major tournaments due to Catania's presence.

I like these setters (Mancini, Bonacchi, Fanizza) technique-wise, especially Mancini and Fanizza both should get a starting role playing time in A2 next season.

Volpe and Bartolucci were good on A2 level last season, so I don't think they'll make any impact on NT-level, but should make it to the A1 at some point. Berger and Balestra can also make it, none of them show any Russo/Galassi/Mosca-potential level tho, so it's a bit irrelevant from NT perspective.

I was surprised by Arguelles level in Junior League finals (he won MVP few weeks ago and was killing it), but his subs here weren't any good. Cardona got some playing time in Cuneo, but none of them is even on Sala/Guzzo level.

If there wasn't a scheduling conflict, Magliano and Barrotto from 2005 team should be there

Did I miss something? I don't think so. And we have to keep in mind that Boninfante, Fanizza, Orioli, Porro, Boninfante are 2004, so a year younger than for example all Polish OHs/OPPs/Setters, and that's a lot on this level, that is why these POL-ITA matches were so close in the past even though from long-term perspective it was kind of obvious Italians have bigger upside.

This game against Bulgaria will be interesting, Porro-less Italy already played couple of friendlies against Bulgaria without Nikolov, and I saw boxscores with two very easy sweeps, so we'll see how big of a swing Nikolov can make, and it's obvious he can single-handedly win a final spot.

  • The team that 100% cheats with ages is India, has been like that for the last 20 years or so.

Iranians... I think they just deceive your eye with their beards. Their jumps and spike heights are absurd though, it looks like every player has a springboard below. Serve too, almost every player jump serves. These guys must stay 24/7 at the gym.

  • someone should forward and email this to Velasco.

  • I have the impression that with Porro we would have won the tournament with all 3-0.
