2023 SEA V.League (August 1–11, Vietnam and Thailand)

  • Yes, kind of a grant from FIVB to select developing countries. Other countries had coaches from FIVB also at some point. We all do not like the coach and his selection. Both in NT and the club team he coaches now have questionable roster selections and bad performance

Isn't he limited by who the teams will let him select? Either by virtue of whatever, or that the players have some other tournament going on they are playing in

The PHI NT situation is surreal and a little tragic. FIVB might be a bit peeved PHI isn't taking advantage of their help in a more cohesive manner

In some cases, no. It's hard to explain without giving all the necessary context, but that would take a long time. I'll just cite an example.

When he came in 2021, he formed a 24-woman national team pool. He excluded the current "ace" Alyssa Valdez, the PH's best setter Jia Morado-De Guzman, and the PH's best libero Kath Arado. Jia is 26 that time, winning all the awards, and majority will probably agree that she's the PH best setter. She was not even invited in the pool, and the Coach selected as his main setter a Univ setter who isn't even having playing time in her team because she is the 3rd in setting depth. I don't hate the player but I don't think there's anyone who can say she is better than Jia when she can't even beat the 2 setters in her team. The Brazilian Coach even had interviews in the media saying she excluded Jia, Alyssa and the others because he wanted young, tall and fresh and that he have chosen the best players in the PH :rolll: When you look at the whole roster though, there are older, and shorter players than the ones I mentioned who's more easy to replace tbh.

By 2023, guess who he got to lead the team - Jia, Kath (although eventually injured so she missed the SEAG), and even Aly (injured, I'm fine if he did not choose Aly this 2023 but 2021 Alyssa still deserves to be in the NT).

Another person who he doesn't select for NT - Tots Carlos. Probably the best wing spiker in the PH now. Carlos only got into the NT recently because she had performed really well at AVC Cup - the tournament our NT Coach did not handle. I don't think Carlos would even be in the NT if not for that stint where the "NT" was handled by someone else. He had no choice but to select Carlos now though :dance6:

Now, I agree we need to invest in the younger ones. But I don't agree with removing the veterans completely when they are still the best in their positions. I won't argue about Alyssa, but not picking Jia and Kath in a huge 24-woman pool in 2021 is already a very questionable take. The club teams not releasing their players, is only in the recent selection since a PVL tournament is ongoing.

Now, for his club team... let's just say Akari is not even winning even with good players :S

He might be a good NT Coach, but considering the state of PH federation now, I don't think he is the right fit as of this moment.

  • Not about SEA VLeague, but related lol. If I remember it right, Warisara Seetaoled was the 4th OH of Thailand in the recent SEA Games. I was thinking that time who she is and that it's interesting that they added a young player in the mix. I've been watching her at U19 World Champs and I like what I'm seeing. Is she the up and coming OH in the Thailand pool? There's also another one I like from last year's Asian U20, Donphon Sinpho. Will she play U21 Worlds? If they are the up and coming OHs, I hope they somewhat get playing time in these smaller tournaments like SEA VLeague, even as substitutes.

  • I can kind of understand if he came in with some sort mandate or something that he might want to start fresh or whatever, but I think he's been revealed as someone who is not up to his pay grade (whatever that may be)

This is great to have some data on the PHI world. I'm glad we've started all these threads. Thanks for the post :drink:

Lolss... Warisara is the baby of the team ... She’s seventeen and look a few years younger.

I haven’t had a chance to see much of the Thai team play in the u19 WCH, but yes she’s definitely a potential for the NT. She’s not that tall, of similar built and playing style like Wipawee...and both are strong hitters.

As for Donphon, I’m not sure if she will play for the U21 Worlds. Their u19 and u21 teams were involved in a domestic event.... 2023 SEALECT Thailand Volleyball Championships ....similar to the Invitational Conference in the Philippines, where one or two outside teams were invited to join Thai selections (in this case Duc Giant Chemicals, Vietnam).

Donphon wasn’t in the u21 team, whereas Warisara was in the u19 team.

sitenoise ...we need to do something about SEALECT Thailand next year :/

  • so thailand is like dominican republic in asia

They send their best team and won all little tournaments in the continent

    But in international competitions.......

That and also the fact that Philippines is not represented by their NT means the match was always going to be one sided. Their players put up a good fight tho, if you look at sets 1 and 3 :|

It will still be the same result, even if it's our team A :rolll:

I agree that Thailand is like the Dominican Republic of Asia, bringing their A team in all competitions big or small :dance6:

  • Is this year's model going to crown a winner of this round, and then a separate winner of the 2nd Round? That really messes me up at volleybox unless it's the same team :rolll:

  • Separately crowned , and, likely different winners... Thailand and Vietnam <X

Yikes. It's tragic when there are two different MVPs. You have to pick one to give the award to while the other remains lost to the dustbin of history :white:

I usually add a news item to the tournament timeline that spells it all out, which will auto link to the loser's timeline so stans might run into it

  • So the winner of Thailand v Vietnam will be the winner of this round
