2023 SEA V.League (August 1–11, Vietnam and Thailand)

  • “Are YOU ready?”

Said Vietnam’s brand new team captain :box:

    BCVN

quoting so it shows up twice

  • Team rosters for the second leg

(please note that some of the data are inaccurate (eg. Players’ height....eg.

    Ratri Wulandari’s height is 178cm, Youku Mediol’s is 169cm, Wulandari Augustina’s is 183cm)

    INDONESIA

    PHILIPPINES

    Thailand

    VIETNAM

    ASEAN Volley Gossips

  • Indonesia and Philippines didn’t make any changes to their rosters and the team for Leg 1 is the same as that of Leg 2. Thailand made three changes, OHs Kubkaew Nathimar and Chuewulim Sutadta replacing Wipawee and Tanacha, and new setter Sinpho Donphon replacing Sirima. Sinpho previously played as an OH.

Vietnam made the most changes... nearly all the starting six will miss the second leg...

OHs 4T, Tu Linh, OP Trinh, MBs NT Trinh, Tra Giang, Setter Lam Oanh and Liberos Khang

    Dang and Kim Liên.

The new players are OHs Hoang Thi Tao, Dinh Thi Thuy OP Doan Thi Xuan, MBs Le Thanh Thuy, Pham Thi Hien, Nguyen Ly Thuy Vi and Liberos Nguyen Thi Ninh Anh and Le Thi Thanh Lien.

  • I was surprised Donphon Sinpho is a setter now. Did she play as setter in the Thailand League in the recent seasons? When and why was she converted from OH?

I actually have no idea why she converted to a setter....she was still an OH in the most recent Thai League, so the change must be quite recent. Pornpun is still with the team, so I suppose Donphon will be the reserve setter and possibly reserve OH also

It is interesting that Gong, the OP of the China NT was a setter before, she sometimes switch back to being a setter, like that time when her Jiangsu teammate and NT setter Diao injured herself in the Chinese league.

  • No 4T, Trinh, Oanh, NT Trinh, Khanh Dang.....No problem

This 2nd leg squad, imo, plays much closer to the classic Vietnamese volleyball, which heavily relies on MBs for offense. The coach fully took advantage of Kim Thoa’s exceptional ability (and eagerness) to cater for her MBs.

Don’t get me wrong NT Trinh and Tra Giang are also excellent hitters — it’s just the game plan of the 1st squad team isn’t built on MBs being the main attackers.

I don’t think Indonesia expected this switch in play style — they could somewhat contain the OHs but had no idea what to do with the MBs in the match.

With the likes of 4T, Trinh and Tu Lin, going to the sides is always going to be rewarding...but less so when they meet tall blockers, in which case, fast balls through the middle, especially when you have quick MBs may be better. I don’t think Indonesia has answers to either strategy, and they can’t hit back effectively without Megawati :(

which is also why this teams early success is important — it shows Coach Kiet that he can and should be flexible with switching things up, not just a few players on and off the court, but a whole team, play style, and mentality.
