2023 SEA V.League (August 1–11, Vietnam and Thailand)

  • PHI wasn't able to end a crucial set yet again. Head Coach is getting the hate for changing the main setter in the crucial moment of that must win set. I hate that decision also

Anyway, pretty positive feedback about the players and the squad in social media in the Philippines for the whole tournament. The girls showed a lot of promise and good plays. A roster which is a combination of the key players from this SEA VLeague + the starters of the SEA Games would be a good one imo. Then maybe 1 from the Challenge Cup roster

For the 3 tournaments Philippines joined this year, we used 40 different players. wild. It's not because we had a big pool, but just because we don't have a real National Team Program lol. I don't even have any idea who will play in the Asian Championship later this month

I watched the first set...Solomon was quite impressive there. I missed sets 2 and 3 and part of set 4 :(

I was hoping for a fifth set, they were leading 22-18, then 24-22 I think.... before they lost focus :|

  • the live stream I was following stop abruptly when the the match ended so I missed the closing ceremony :(

you can see in this video.

The announcer announced the second best middle blocker as “number seventeen from Việt Nam Nguyen Thi Xuan.” The Viet girls looked at each other in confusion, while Indo and PHI girls pointed to Wilda (who also is number 17, and, well, an actual MB) and began to celebrate.

It was a very awkward situation for both Xuan and Wilda. Don’t get me wrong Xuan is an excellent blocker but the award was “Best Middle Blocker” and she registered and played as OP full time.

  • Lolsss Thanks !

:aww: What an awkward moment for everyone.... they sometimes select a winner who is not from that category, and the announcer did clearly mention Doan Thi Xuan’s name...it’s the other players who pushed Wilda out, who’s to blame I feel. Anyway, moments later when the setter was announced.....Arneta Putri was reluctant to receive the award, the female Thai commentator said....”mai man jai aok maa”.... no confidence to go out

My favourite moment was seeing how happy the Philippine players were when Alyssa was chosen best opposite. They were screaming and jumping up and down. This is why I like award giving or victory ceremonies...I like the emotions, the laughter, tears sometimes, and, the occasional embarrassing moments like what happened tonight...

Just a thought tho, Organisers usually have spare gold, silver or bronze medals, in case there is a tie. If they had a spare award for tonight’s ceremony, it would be nice to give Wilda one too.... ..:/

  • It’s amusing, in a lighthearted internet discussion some Thai netizens have claimed that Vietnamese netizens have accuse the Thai team of importing players of mixed ancestry (Thai and Korean or Japanese) from overseas....

Why would the Vietnamese do that ? Lolsss

Anyway other Thai netizens have even admitted to things like, Natthimar is half Japanese or Donphon is a quarter Korean....

In truth, the people of Thailand have ancestors that came from a number of Asian countries and even some from Africa and Europe...many have mixed ancestry. Around 15% (esti) have Chinese ancestry .... so it’s not surprising some of the players look like East Asians.

I think it may be fake news  none of the popular viet vball groups I frequent talks about this. The only discussion I saw about it was actually viet netizens making fun of Thai netizens for thinking they care that much about these players.

On the issue of Viet-Thai netizen drama. I think the only Thai players some viet netizens dislike are Thatdao and Sasipapron, citing that they have “attitude.” Viet netizens like or are neutral about the other Thai players (Wipawee and Nootsara are actually very beloved).

yes, I think some Thai netizens made that up...as I pointed out, why would the Vietnamese do that

I think Nootsara is loved by everyone around the world, and I think 4T is very popular too
