Chinese women's NT 2024

  • China has emerged champions in both the 2024 Asian Women's u18 and u20 tournaments. From their performance we can get an idea of what the NT team will look like, say, five years from now. The following players were the most impressive imo :

    From the u18 team

    OH - Zhai Yurui b.2007 h. 182cm

    OP - Yang Shuming b.2008 h.193cm

    MB - Wang Aoqian b.2007 h.196cm

    L - Song Jiayi b.2007 h.168cm

    From the u20 team

    OP - Wang Yindi b.2005 h.189cm

    OH - Li Chenxuan b.2006 h.187cm

    OH - Guo Xiangling b.2006 h.187cm

    OH - Dong Yuhan b.2006 h.189cm

Yindi was inconsistent in this tournament but she's still one of the best OP of this generation. Guo was ok initially but faded away in the finals. She was replaced by Dong, who played really well. Li was consistently good throughout and was the standout attacker in this tournament, I feel. We do not have a capable setter from both teams and only one MB and one Libero with potentials :(

The head coach of the u20 team, Kuang Qi with his team of experienced coaching staff has now won the 2023 Fivb u21 and 2024 Asian u20 tournaments. I think he should lead our senior NT team to Paris2024

  • Both Li Chenxuan and Dong Yuhan have some pretty strong serves. If they can work on their passing and consistency in attack, they will be good prospects for the NT.

Gao Yi and Yang Hanyu aren't making progress and should be cut after Paris 2024. They should get Wang Wenhan, Wan Ziyue, Zeng Jieya, and Wang Aoqian experience with the B Team to speed up their development.

I think the next best setter China should be focusing on training is Xie Shengyu. She's got potential but needs more playing time to overtake Xu Xiaoting.

... and Zhuang, Wu, Zhou YT and even LYY will be around for LA 2028 :cheesy:

Xie and Wang could join a bigger CVL team like Tianjin, Shanghai or Jiangsu to get more exposure, but it could be harder for Wang because these clubs already have MBs that are more established there :/

  • I thought Gao Yi played very well in Shanghai. She didn't get to play in VNL except in 1 match during playoffs. I can't rate her negatively based on that.

Yes, Gao Yi did play a part in Shanghai's success in last season's CVL. When Gao Yi started playing she showed promise, being a tall player with a very high reach, she was already good at blocking then. However her weakness was in her attack, and her serve. She seemed to have no strength in hitting the ball, and this didn't improve as the years went by. Last year she appeared stronger physically with bigger shoulders and arms, but it made little difference...and at a higher level of competition like senior Asian events or VNL, her hitting gets picked up quite easily. Gao is 26 this year so I'm not sure if she can improve much, perhaps a new coach and physical trainer could help :/

  • I’ve only watched Gao Yi in VNL and she was just average. (Limited games)

I actually prefer Yang Hanyu as MB as she is a bit more unpredictable. She’s reminds me of WYY who has improved significantly. I’m surprised she wasn’t picked for the Olympic roster instead.

  • Finally beat USA at the Olympics since 2004. I think good fortune will come. This team really needs to work on passing.

  • A sweet narrow escape... now most likely the team will earn one spot in QF.

Good luck for the team, may it have glorious journey in Paris!

Couldn't watch live, hope to watch the replay later.

We got lucky... the players were getting tired and losing focus from the middle of set 3. This then resulted in poor reception, poor passing and so on. Cai looked on, clueless and did nothing. Finally someone in the coaching bench might have pointed out, there's Wu Mengjie and she was brought in at the end of set 4. It was however too late to make a difference.

LYY saved the day by scoring several points in set 5.

I won't expect anything from Cai Bin because he will play the same group of players to death as always. It's pretty much on the players hands. Sets 3-5 they were really struggling with passing but managed to win it in the end. LYY was clutch in the 5th set.

    8/10 (!)

  • If they played as they did in sets 3-5, a win over France is not guaranteed :(

France is not USA though, at least not on paper. Next game is not Serbia so no pressure.
