2024 Women’s Volleyball Nations League

  • Awards for the Rising and flopping teams of Vnl 2024?

Imo most teams performed better than I expected, only except Turkey & USA. Turkey was affected by the numerous injuries, but USA was the real flop. The first week was completely wasted by Karch by bringing Cuttino, then when neither Thompson & Drews could deliver (as expected), they are like back to their Murphy era.

  • I just saw this. I made my apologies earlier. I am terrible remembering names and spelling for that matter, but I thought I got Tubag’s and Derya’s name correctly. Anyway, I like Meliha not because of what I read on X if any, instead of what I watched from FB games during this past season. IMHO she is way better than Tugba and Derya for sure. I have high hope for Ilkin as well. I think Turkiye needs to heal their wounds and get ready for the OG. If they want to go deep in OG they need Hande, Ilkin and Zehra for sure, and Meliha otherwise I don’t see much hope prevailing against Italy, Brazil, and perhaps against some other teams like China, Japan and Serbia.

I also think contrary to what you believe that Ana C. is overall playing very well. Sure, she may have some down games but over all she is very important for Brazil to succeed getting the gold medal. Will see!!

i remember Karsta Lowe, she was really good!!!

  • I'm curious about the dream team now. Japan played great as a collective, but looking at the tournament as a whole, I can't name anyone aside from Koga who was really a standout in their position. Both Kojima and Fukudome are great, but it's hard to get a best libero award when you're playing in a two libero system.

IMO Carol, Gabi and Nyeme had a really good chance of making the dream team if Brazil had gone to the final, but now I think only Carol will get it. She leads the blocking statistics for both the competition as a whole and the finals by a good margin, and no one from Japan is realistically going to be named best MB (though Airi was great today). The other MB should be Danesi.

Egonu is a lock, of course.

What are you guys' predictions for the dream team?

  • OH: Gabi, Koga

    OPP: Egonu

    S: Orro

    MB: Danesi, Carol

L: Nyeme (although they might choose Kojima bc third placed team can't have more players in the dream team than second placed)

    MVP: Egonu

    Special award: Sylla

  • I think the same, but there is no way 3rd placed team to have 2 players. Realistically Carol, because there is no 2 other blockers, but it will be hard for them to forget Gabi.

Orro, Kojima, Koga, Danesi, Egonu are locked. My pick for for a second hitter is Degradi :)

  • MVP: Egonu / Koga (Depends on who wins the gold)

OH: Koga, Gabi (or Sylla has a chance if Italy wins)

    OPP: Egonu

    S: Orro

    MB: Danesi, Carol (or Thaisa?)

L: most likely MDG, but if Japan wins I think Kojima may have a chance

  • I think Poland is gonna be more motivated to win the bronze than Brazil tbh

  • Awards for the Rising and flopping teams of Vnl 2024?

    Rising:

    1. Italy

    2. Brazil

    3. Japan

    Flopping

    1. USA

    2. Turkey

    3. China

Italy seems to be a level above their last year performance. Brazil is definitely better than last year too but not a great increase like Italy. Japan has improved their mentality which is huge in decisive moments.

USA is the biggest concern, ever since the loss to Turkey in the VNL SF last year the teams aura seems different. It’s like a number of players have lost confidence in themselves. In any game you could count on USA to fight back even if they were 2-0 down, the same energy doesn’t seem to exist anymore even though it kinda appeared in a few moments during week 3. They have a lot of work to do before Paris.

For Turkey I understand they are battling with a lot of injuries and the tight roster decisions by Santarelli was definitely unfair on the girls. They should have just did the same thing as Serbia and rested their key players. Only playing Vargas with Elif/Cansu from the A team with Asli, Yasemin, Beyza and Meliha, Derya, Tugba etc.. With Eda, Karakurt, Hande, Zehra, Ilkin all staying in Turkey. Even with the injuries I feel like they should have got past Poland and played with Italy at least but I guess the morale was really low.

I expected China to play all their stars and go all guns blazing this year both in VNL and Paris but I guess it is what it is.

  • I think Poland is gonna be more motivated to win the bronze than Brazil tbh

nah, Brazil is motivated too. They were so close for the gold so definitely they will play.

  • Even tho she missed some matches I don't have a problem giving Poland #5 Korneluk an MB award

  • Kurtagic still statistically best blocker by a mile, 4.12 per game :)

I would have mentioned her too but I didn’t see her on the SRB roster so I lost confidence

  • Carol really is the best MB in this tournament.
