2024 Women’s Volleyball Nations League

  • Didn’t Italy win the 2022 VNL? Or even though they won, iyo did others lose in the tournament more so than Italy won the championship?

If you are referring to the opinion that this is the best Italian team level-wise since WCH 2018 - what I meant is that we've seen Italy at some points (VNL 22, ECH 21) finding a right rhythm and shape, but here they're pretty good shape-wise, but also development of Italy in technical aspects vs Mazzanti era is just blatantly obvious and striking.

Today was the first time that they actually made too many unforced errors, but at the same timeI don't know how many times Egonu made +50 swings (51) without a single error in block and attack in her career, and it was no coincidence as she's much more (or at least she was in the VNL) efficient in this regard (limiting errors) than in the past. She's been more Haak-like stylistically and it fits very well what Velasco is trying to achieve, i.e. patient volleyball based on blocking, defense and Egonu. I remember his first conference after he was officially introduced as a HC of Italian NT - and asked about Antropova playing alongside Egonu (supposedly as an OH), he said it's rather not an option for him as he wants to work on fundamentals in the first place on technical level. What at that time I found as kind of questionable to neglect this option considering limited talent pool of Italy on OH's position, but - well - he may be out of touch with female volleyball for 25years or so, but Velasco is extremely analytical as a coach and he's done it, at least so far, with kind of significant change of Italian playing style in limited time. Will it be fruitful against for example top Turkey with Vargas and Karakurt in Paris - it's another question obv.

That being said, some games were entertaining and it would be foolish to expect more at this stage of preparations for Olympic Games, but I believe only Italy and Japan played throughout the whole event close to their ~optimal level (doesn't mean they can't improve, e.g. connection of Orro with the MBs or Ishikawa underperforming in the final), so I definitely wouldn't overreact and pretend that Italy is some sole favorite for the OG. There's none such team - I believe - as there's no team with complete set of OHs/OPPs in the world right now. Unless Russia gets reintroduced to the volleyball world (and it's not a given talent-wise in Russian case), we won't see juggernaut-type of a team like Brazil in 2008 with perfect lineup in a while. For example, I find it very optimistic to see Poland actually getting a medal with Stysiak badly underperforming (today the least) in the finals, but other teams have similar upsides to use.

We saw in the 3rd set that OH-lineup will still be a weakness of Italy, because Degradi isn't a stable passer, Bosetti was non-existent offensively throughout the event and Sylla is Sylla (although she was pretty efficient this whole VNL and I wouldn't mock her getting an award considering an obvious winning bias for the awards).

  • Congrats to my NT Italy for a well-deserved victory, :cup: but let me praise JPN and POL NT for their performances all along the tournament and especially in the finals. Much credits to Manabe and Lavarini for their work, especially as compared to relatively poor results achieved by both teams in recent years under previous trainers, Kudos to trainer Velasco (and his teammates Barbolini/Bernardi) for restoring to full strenght an ITA NT who had just crumbled into pieces one year ago. :obey:

We may now approach Paris much more self-confident than just 1 month ago, knowing that we stay for sure among the main contenders to the OG podium. As it has been often said, you must not discard teams like USA, TUR, CHI, SRB -no matter their low performances- not to speak of Brasilian girls, who imho still stays prominent in the race for OG gold.

Hope to see many beautiful and top-level volley matches in August, and let me wish for an Italian medal (no matter the colour) since this is sorely missed in our palmarès. :wavy:

  • After Poland vs Turkiye, Simge didnt shake Korneluk’s hand

    https://x.com/sfvmaye/status/1804822601912500520

that is another level of stupid behaviour

But She is happily hugging Ebrar after She acts like completely lunatic. What hypocrite Simge is :gone:

  • If only Simge played some role in that match  Girl you have been watching the court from the bench almost the whole tournament  But being completely honest, that one should be pointed out and somehow punished. I don’t remember anything similar at the highest level, especially on women’s side. FIVB is showing their slogans about fair play and sportsmanship all the time..

thats why I decided to share it because staredowns etc is one thing but not shaking another players hand after the game is another and I really don’t think it was accidental since Korneluk walked back and tried to ask her and she completely ignored her

I saw this, and I can’t believe my eyes because this is the opposite of the Simge I know. I had the opportunity to chat with her, and she is a ball of positivity. If this is not a mistake, I agree that this is the highest level of stupid behavior, and this is not the first time Korneluk has given a staredown.

  • Be careful - we might be called provoking especially if it involves Turkiye

No need for the smart remarks, let's all try to move on and not bring up negativity for no reason please.

I have watched that video back to back maybe more than 20 times. Simge, shooked the hand of the player in front of Korneluk and Korneluk was the last player. In such a mood of disappointment she seemed to be in a hurry to leave the court to changing room, I also want to believe in that, it was not intentional. Else, it is a mistake. I also know that, she is not that kind of person and a real professional for so many years. Continuing that, it was Ayça. Ayça noticed that Korneluk turned her back to say something or touch to Simge, continued and passed by and then in the last second turned back towards to Korneluk to give five. Behind Ayça it was İlkin, who noticed that confusion, stopped for a second and shooked Korneluk's hand.

It started with Ebrar (which I didn't like either), then continued with Vargas along with some stupid comments and now this. I don't know who else will be on target and what is next to create perception with SMART!! remarks...

I would say to all, let's stop these meaningless topics and continue to talk about magnificent Japan, great Italian team or well deserved medal of Poland. Criticise Türkiye about what they did wrongly in the final rounds or the other teams and predictions, here or in a new thread. If it continue like this, I cannot imagine what will happen during Olympic Games.

  • i'm sure the Turks have noticed the dislike directed towards their team due to (mostly) Ebrar. I was hoping they'd talk to her or something. Reign her in. But it seems like some of them are even joining her.

I remember Yuan toning down her screams when her team scolded her for ebing so loud.

Why can't the Turks do that.

    Anyway.

I didnt know that she can be like this... I thought that she is way of this kind of behavior:white:

I saw that after game EVEN Ebrar give two hands to shake to few polish players:drink:

It means that what is during the game its stay on court, but after you can forget and congratulate your oponent.
Very weird and unproffesional move by Simge:whistle:

  • For some reason I thought De Gennaro was 34-35, wow what a reality check.

for De Gennaro will be probably the last year with the national team, now there are already a lot of good liberos in italy. After that we have still a lot of good young players as Fahr 22 / Lubian 23 / Pietrini 24, Antropova 21, Linda Nwakalor 21, Bintu Diop 21, etc, etc.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Italy wins gold at Olympics that De Gennaro is gone try to win WCH as last competition for her in NT… WCH is next year ?
