Japan Women's NT 2024

  • Can someone explain this whole marriage dilemma for Japanese athletes? I doubt IOC has that kind of policy. I've never heard of it until now and it boggles my mind why it would be an issue to stay active together when they are representing their country and are also unifying their sports you would think that's a plus

It's not the IOC but JOC. Japan just like Korea has an extremely austere marriage culture for public figures.

I don't even know where to start with this topic but I figured JVA must've dragged this on for as long as possible so Koga can still play until this Olympics. When Koga stated that she wanted to retire after Tokyo ultimately due to their tragic circumstances but also because her and Nishida were already planning on marrying each other is an indication that their status could've been a huge problem had they not come out publicly.

So what's the issue? they're both Japanese by blood, both representing Japan and they're both living in Japan. Why is it wrong for both of them to continue to play actively side by side. Why force one of them to retire? I still don't get it

Because in Japanese society whether the spouse of the public figure is an ippanjin (non-celeb) or another public figure, they are still expected to uphold the values of having a traditional family life and be leading role models of what a healthy family life is despite their status.

That's why if you guys followed Shohei Ohtani's marriage news to women's basketball NT player Mamiko Tanaka, Ohtani described her as a "normal Japanese person" even though she is in fact an NT player. Read this article to better understand what I'm talking about https://www.latimes.com/sports…uncement-japanese-culture

article is more on privacy but more or less covers the standards athletes have to follow once they marry.

ohtani's wife is gorgeous:love: a quick google search says she just retired in 2023. nt but not an olympian. ohtani announced their marriage in feb 2024. makes sense

  • knowing all that, why did koga and nishida rush to marriage knowing it can shorten one of their careers:rolleyes:

Koga was primarily raised by her grandparents. They go to all her big games in Japan you can check her IG. I think her grandfather passed away before she got married. I suspect it had something to do with wanting to see her get married before they die (unfortunately for her grandpa).

Did you just out Ohtani's wife :rolll:

I don't get any of this. So weird

  • If Koga chose to retire because she has other plans for her life, then I'm happy for her, even though I'll of course miss watching her play.

But if she's being forced out because of her marriage status, then I'm sorry, but that leaves a very sour taste in my mouth. I know it's not my culture, so it might not be my place to comment on this, but defining her as a married woman first and an athlete second just feels incredibly disrespectful to everything she's achieved through her own individual merits.

I don't even try to parse anything that happens outside of "start the game" and the first ref crossing their arms signaling "match over" :rolll:

Off court stuff just isn't for me. I'm about 97% successful at this :cup:

Kinda sad if this is imposed by a committee.

I just want to mention that many Korean volleyball players are married and still play competitively - some have even started families and returned to play (Kim Haeran and Jung Daeyoung last season, although they are now retired in their late early 40s).

    It's bizarre to be honest.

Araki's husband was a rugby player. He retired a year before Araki said she will go on hiatus to have her baby Waka Araki. Similarly Saori Kimura's beach volleyball husband retired a year before she announced her exit. Neither men are well-known nor as accomplished in their respectful fields as their partners and you will rarely hear the Japanese media talk about them.

Other married players that are still active are Yurie Nabeya and NT setter Iwasaki who are both married to ippanjins and are declared breadwinners of the family. It's important to declare this because if they don't they may not be able to compete or are fined a ridiculous amount of money. There's also that Denso player who married Uesaka's brother too but I think she retired just this season. It's not entirely uncommon but not a lot of female players stay active as their male counterparts.

Since Ohtani is in the US it's impossible for him not to reveal his wife's identity considering they go to a hundred parties in a year. And they won't be pestered and stalked there unlike if they were based in Japan.

This was their first public appearance

  • Are there actually photos out there on the internets of volleyball players "naked" because they were shot with an infrared camera? ... I don't know how to describe this. There's been a few articles recently about the "innovative" new uniforms the NT is wearing "to prevent creepy people from stealing their footage"

I have never encountered anything like this and really don't understand what it might look like

    Pics or it didn't happen

  • ?( I've read a couple stories like those but never saw an example

    from #1 Mayu Kikuchi's IG

I assume consent is the issue?

  • I saw on yahoo topics that they were talking about fans photoshopping the uniforms in order to see the erected nipples and cameltoes of players. It has everything to do with sexualizing the players. In the case of beach volleyball players being a lesser hyped sport compared to indoor volley I supposed not a lot of them really care about it. But for indoor female players in particular are subjected to being sexualized hardcore like how tsukuba gave mandai that extremely suffocating bodyhugging uniform in order to highlight her boobs. I know I know I'm being disgustingly graphic with these descriptions but that's their reason for making those innovative antispy fabric that has already been used by tennis players decades ago

  • anyone knows why the men's team left with japan women and men's soccer teams instead of the women's team? meanwhile all other sports are in the same flight with teams within their own federations

Those 3 team sports as in competing as a team not individually have the highest expectations to get a medal in Paris therefore they all leave together. That's why the men's team weren't present during JOC's official sendoff ceremony where the women's team minus Koga participated. The women's team did not make the cut for expectations from JOC's national survey.

    Oh ok:huh: Thanks for explaining
