Germany NT 2024

  • As first news for the summer, DVV announced that Konstantin Bitter will be the new head coach of U23 NT. Germany will host Universiade 2025, so the goal is to prepare a team with young talents for that tournament. I wonder what this decision means for Alex Waibl who was coach of the last U23/Universiade team :/

On other news, the official list of NT athletes has been updated on DVV site. The federation has to give an official list every year to the German Olympic Sports Federation, it has something to do with financial support and also doping controls. Last year the list predicted the actual team roster fairly well, so here we go:

    Vanessa Agbortabi

    Lina Alsmeier

    Anastasia Cekulaev

    Annie Cesar

    Laura Emonts

    Marie Hänle

    Anne Hölzig

    Corina Glaab

    Lena Große Scharmann

    Pia Kästner

    Hannah Kohn

    Rica Maase

    Patricia Nestler

    Hanna Orthmann

    Anna Pogany

    Marie Schölzel

    Antonia Stautz

    Lena Stigrot

    Sarah Straube

    Monique Strubbe

    Luisa Van Clewe

    Ivana Vanjak

    Camilla Weitzel

    Emilia Weske

Laura Emonts probably is pregnant so she's not going to play this summer. Orthmann and Hölzig are still recovering from ACL injuries so it's questionable if and when they join NT.

Kimberly Drewniok is not on the list again, so I guess it's questionable if she'll return once again this summer.

Other than the mentioned players I can see Lena Kindermann (OPP, Suhl), Pia Timmer (OH, Dresden) and Elena Kömmling (OH, Münster) getting an invitation. Not too many options around in Germany unfortunately...

  • Germany will play a friendly match against Romania on 10 May in Potsdam. It seems pretty certain that Heynen still is the coach despite all the rumors of him going to coach Iran men.

No official news about the roster yet, but Münster's press writes that Luisa van Clewe has been invited to NT trainings while Rica Maase did not get an invitation this year.

I think it's good that, compared to last year, they didn't choose the Sportforum in Berlin again, but rather the Arena in Potsdam. But I have to say that the DVV is planning a test match with very high ticket prices. The cheapest ticket is five euros more expensive than by a normal Potsdam home game. The explanation for this is obvious, but I don't know whether you can really fill the hall at such prices.

Regarding Heynen, there is not only the rumor with Iran, but also the rumor that he could take over the Chinese men's national team. As things stand, it looks like such a change, whether to China or Iran, would only take place after the Olympics.

They failed miserably, third place in pool, directly out of competition.

  • In contrast to the U20, the U18 national team led by Leana Grozer was this weekend able to qualify for the final round of the European Championship with three 3-0 wins against England, Estonia and Spain. Thi tournament will be held in the Romanian city of Blaj and the Greek city of Heraklion, also known as Iraklio in German.

  • Carlotta Grun (2008, 2.04m) was part of the team but from what I've seen she's nothing but tall. She looks very uncoordinated and slow, I hope she'll meet some good coaches that make her able to benefit from her height but in Germany it's not easy to meet good coaches unfortunately :gone: Either way this generation seems at least more talented than the 05/06 girls, I guess that generation was hit the worst by the pandemic because those girls were without volleyball for quite a while in a crucial age.

At (old) CEV she is listed with 1.90 m, but maybe this is an old number when registered at CEV for the first time, when she was still growing? 1.90m is a reasonable size for a middle anyway.
