Germany NT 2024

  • Okay, I think I read the date here before. I was referring to the date on which the squads were released by the FIBV on their site, and this was on Thursday (April 18th), as far as I know. But if they had to be sent earlier, of course, then that only makes it even clearer that Alex Waibl had nothing to do with the nomination.

  • Rett Larson's latest post reveals which 13 players are currently in Kienbaum:

    Sarah Straube, Hannah Kohn

    Lena Kindermann

Lena Stigrot, Lina Alsmeier, Toni Stautz, Pia Timmer, Romy Jatzko

Camilla Weitzel, Anastasia Cekulaev, Luisa van Clewe

    Annie Cesar, Patricia Nestler

  • But in Münster there was an article clearly stating she got invited, and I don't think Waibl will un-invite players that Heynen invited. And then, who knows how long that whole coach change has been prepared behind the scenes?

Kozuch last week had an Insta story saying something about training on Monday, so maybe not all players arrived on Friday yet. Of course DVV isn't any help as usual with providing information :aww:

    WN article from 26.3. said:

  • DVV finally posted an article about NT training, though they don't say which players are actually invited. It says that Kozuch was supposed to be there, but for health reasons she couldn't practise for 2 weeks and then she didn't have the energy to join NT camp, plus it's challenging to join NT with a little kid at home, so for the time being it's not planned that she'll join the team.

Between the lines, Lena Stigrot's comment about Heynen's departure ("if somebody doesn't believe in the team or the project anymore, it's better to let them go") sounds quite straightforward ^^ I guess not many players are going to miss him :wavy:

  • A short look at the "other German NTs", i.e. in the sand:

Sandra Ittlinger and former vice world champion Karla Borger won the (2nd tier) Challenge tournament in China last week. Ludwig/Lippman placed 5th.

It seems quite likely now that two German teams will qualify for the Olympics, that is the maximum per federation. However it's unclear which two teams this will be as Germany's top duo is currently Müller/Tillmann and the race is very tight between the three teams.

These are the German teams in the Olympic ranking atm:

    Müller / Tillmann 7660

    Ludwig / Lippmann 7480

    Ittlinger / Borger 7360

The cutoff is at ca 6500 points at the moment. 3 Elite (this week in Brasilia, in 3 weeks in Portugal and in Ostrava/CZ ending June 9th) and one 2nd tier Challenge tournament (in Poland beginning of June) remain for the teams to improve their score. The 12 best results from 23/24 are used for the ranking,

It will be tough for Ittlinger/Borger as they will probably need to start in the qualification in Brazil and Portugal, Müller/Tillmann will be going to the Main Draw directly. In Brazil also Ludwig/Lippmann are in the Main Draw.

edit: The ultimate decision which teams to send is made by DVV so they could in principle prefer Ludwig/Lippmann over a higher placed team but that would probably end in a lawsuit.

  • Rett Larson's latest Instagram post reveals that Drewniok, Schölzel and Agbortabi have joined NT training. So Drewniok is really serious about a prolonged comeback :white:

Drewniok has a great heart it seems, she don't want the others let down.

  • An article from Schwerin that Kästner "will take care of her health before starting a new adventure in Italy". I wonder if this means no NT for her this summer? :white:

With her history of back problems, it would certainly be better to have a good rest now, but it's very bad timing :( So probably Straube would be starter for VNL I guess.

More likely she will be out for the summer.

  • IMHO Waibl has to pull off a real wonder to qualify for Olympics with these available players.

Yep...Orthmann and Kästner will be missing. Straube is good but in the playoffs (which btw were her first playoffs as first setter) she showed that in important matches she can't show her best performance yet.

  • Emilia Weske also has joined NT camp, so the current training roster should be:

    S: Straube, Kohn

    OPP: Drewniok, Kindermann, Weske

OH: Stigrot, Alsmeier, Stautz, Jatzko, Timmer, Agbortabi

MB: Weitzel, Schölzel, Cekulaev, van Clewe

    L: Cesar, Nestler

So assuming that Kästner won't join the last ones missing are Glaab, Strubbe and Pogany, maybe Hänle. Next Friday there'll be a friendly match vs Romania and then VNL already starts soon :white:

  • Although Germany has a weak bench, I think starting 7 is still very solid. To me, Pogany is one of the 5 best liberos. Alsmeier&Stigrot is a good OH duo. Weitzel didn't have her best season this year but we all know what she is capable of. If Kastner is playing as well, I wouldn't count them out

  • Strubbe was talked about joining in Kienbaum on Sunday after final triple ceremony on Thursday in Stuttgart - another lack of pause for her.

And they can change Stautz in especially for reception and service; they have nothing to lose also. Despite this they are far behind also not yet qualified teams like Italy and Japan, which they face already in first week in Antalya.
