2024 Women's U17 Volleyball World Championship

  • Playing with teams from Asia is specific and for Italy it was probably the first match with a team from this part of the world. In the 3rd and 4th sets we fought more but it wasn't enough. I hope that tomorrow against Taipei we will play much better from the start. For me, gold or bronze doesn't matter here. The important thing is to be here and gain experience. It's a pity that Serbia is not here.

Because our coach is idiot, i think he prepared team for this in advance, She did opposite from everyone, used mostly 2008 girls all the time, and of course other teams with girls 2007 butchered them.

  • If you watch the Asia Eastern tournament, Japan has a middle block whose height is 185. The coach didn't put her on the court for one minute even with the match against Macau which was obviously a win. Japan coaches hate tall players.

I agree with you that Japanese coaches may not know how to train tall players. But that they "hate" them? Come on!

That 188cm player ... I'm not sure you've seen these "tall" players play. And Emili did play against Macau

Japan usually skews toward their 'taller' players in the U-Squads, but they went smaller in this tournament

  • Her style of play really screams Kinrankai  Kudo being a 1st year at Furukawa is interesting too. I hope they became strong again since I also like Nakagawa from U18 there.

Do you know if Saya is from Osaka, or did she pick Kinrankai? It is a great match for her. They are winners and so is she :rose:

The middles who had the most playing time on that East Asia Tournament are the better ones. Rin Honda is one of the best in that level right now in Japan for sure. I'm even a fan of Emili in the past years but I can say with confidence that it's more likely she was outplayed so deserves to be in the bench lol. Even in her University games, she's kind of in a slump and not as dominant unfortunately.

Tall players need more time to develop. That's why you need to put them on the court to gain experience. Using short players to win under-age tournaments is very shortsighted.

Is that really a thing? Putting less accomplished players on court in a world championship to develop them?

I haven't seen an article about her. I only saw the ones about Yoritomi and Mizokami so far. But I remember reading at the last high school tournament's roster that she did attend Kinrankai in Junior HS as well.

  • Italy is playing poorly in this tournament. Of course, we could have won against Japan but with a more stable form. I`m surprised that we won here against Turkey. I`m also not sure if an Italian team has ever played against an Asian team...

I understand at the senior level with smart coaches and a boatload of data to implement countermeasures happens. It happens to Japan a lot  Italy figured out the tipping game in this match but how did they go from 1 block in 2 sets to 14 in two more. Japan tired? I dunno. They switched out one of their best scorers for their firecracker who can jump out of the building and it didn't help much. Seemed like they did figure out how to get the back row into the open lanes a lot better

  • Not true, defense is usually terrible at that age. European teams have problem because they mostly used 2007 girls and now they need to play with a girls 2008 and some of this girls were bench to players 2007, other first time called.

This is partially true but at least for Turkey and Italy they maintained some or all of their key players who played the Euro U18 a couple months ago.

Turkey played with the same trio of skipers (Kuyan sisters and Aylin) and Italy retained Tosini amd Caruso, with only Queri being replaced by Massaglia / Aimaretti.

The biggest issue for me is how they unaccustomed to playing with Asian team they are, that's why I thought today's match was going to be a challenge. Adding to that, that in the case of Italy, Tosini, who is arguably the star of the U18, didn't perform up to expectations. Only in set 3 and 4 we actually saw how she can really perform.

Also the bright sight is that Caruso stepped up in this tournament. Her game today was off but overall good performance and the good things is that just like in the Euro u18 Italy is playing with 3 OHs and not a pure opposite, something like China dies, covering LYY in some rotations.

Maybe the federation finally realized that world class OH is what is needed for the future.

  • Just re-watched the end of the match. Japan setter dump at 20-21 sealed it. really took the wind out of Italy's sails

  • Só as I pointed, Japan could upset the winner of Italy vs Turkey 🇹🇷

  • Peru 3-1 Turkiye.

It may be a match for 5-8 placings but I think it's one of the most exciting and entertaining contest in the whole tournament so far. The home fans in the stadium played their part in creating a fantastic atmosphere. Peru was once a powerhouse in volleyball... silver medalist in 1988 Olympics. Could this young squad grow up to challenge the top teams again? As for Turkiye, they've got players who are world class already... their tall no.1 is in my view, the best opposite here.

    :cheesy:

ECH U18 ended in the middle of July, so Europeans had less than a month to prepare in the new group for another tournament - and I doubt they played earlier as much as other countries in these specific squads.

But it's not a total excuse - because Italy was able to dominate Japan by blocking in the 3rd and 4th set, but their reception was awful and besides Tosini they couldn't overpower Japanese defense.

But in general I just don't see that much of a talent in these XXIs generations in Europe in comparison to the earlier gens besides Russia - not saying there aren't talented girls, because they are, they'll have decent careers, but for example this 02-08 Italian gen looks pretty mediocre IMHO from individual talent standpoint and their junior results are still fantastic, so it's not they're worse than other Euro-countries but Russia (who would've swept all the junior tournaments in 02-05 gens only if they wanted/were able to). But maybe I'm wrong, I just don't have similar impression following male junior events.

I wonder about this too. Why does Japan gatekeep their taller female players it's honestly bizarre and very backwards. They're going to select 20 Mayus again after this and 19 of those will retire before you even remember their names.

I love watching Peru girls win! They really fight hard and give their all. Plus, the crowd support for them are amazing! I'm glad they got to host and watch their girls play :box:

I like their head coach too, he's like a doting father to his players. Yesterday, after the QF, he high fived all the Japanese players and also insisted his players mingled with them and took a group photo together. I thought that was special.

    didn’t expect that coming lol

I thought Türkiye would be 5th place easily.

Imo Peru will become in next year the second force of South America. A huge factor will be Rizzola. We can already see huge improvement in Peru. He did great in Colombia imo. Peru has more potential and support.

Perhaps something funky going on, but the OP was wrong about Emili not playing. With regards to the 190cm player, Kaho Kono, she's in this picture for Hachioji but not rostered for the Inter-High tournament that was held this summer. Maybe the coach hates her because she's tall, maybe she's injured?

Too much talking about this issue, seems to me, without actually watching the players play or knowing their circumstances

I also expected Turkiye to be the 5th place team, actually, I consider them some steps above Brazil. I thought both team would be contesting for that 5th position. Btw, Rizzola has been working with this team for 3 months (or even less I think), so yes, he has a massive impact, most cuz Peru was ranked 3rd in the last CSV championship and now they will play vs Brazil to define which will be the best CSV team ranked in this WCH.

Btw, Fofao had really nice words towards Rizzola too. Not sure why he doesnt work with CBV anymore.
