True. The coach knows which competition to prioritize. I bet Brazil would trade all their countless Grand Prix titles for that 1 gold at the World Champs. The Cuban team at that time has 6 Vargas-like players playing at the same time. The power is just insane.
Yeah, they almost defeated China in Athens in the semifinal and that was without Aguero, Francia escaping from Cuba, generation of Regla, Mireya, Costa, Izqueredo already retired, and Carvajal still being a star in Europe as a 36yo. In 2008, they still could've played with Francia-Aguero duo if not for the politics.
Once in a lifetime generation.
For a two-year span, I think Italy is the best team we've seen since, at least stats-wise.
Re: awards - someone should've invented 'best joker' award just for Antropova to receive some individual accolades, because her impact is immense and she has no chance to receive any as a bench player. She went 13/27 in the VNL final with 18 points and 14 points with 12/24 in attack this time, not to mention 28 pts from the bench yesterday.
She really may be the best bench player that we've seen as far as her actual impact on the results goes, obviously, we had legendary players being on the bench at some point, but her contributing almost every game is something via double-sub/individual sub that I don't recall from the past.
