Moki then won her first medal: bronze in the 2006 WGP. At that tournament there was a conflict between Bonitta versus team and the most senior players demanded his resignation. The Italian Volleyball Federation relented and hired Barbolini who led Italy to the World Championship in Japan at that same year. Something similar happened between Mazzanti and the rest of the 2022 World Cup squad, only the federation initially believed him, and we wasted a year. Both Bonitta and Mazzanti had great success with the Italian national team, but they didn't know when to leave.

  • Like Sheila Castro? She also wasn't typical hammer, like Boskovic or Egonu.

Sheilla had a short period of been a powerfull Opp. Not like Boskovic and Egonu but she had power until 2010 imo. But she was só talented that with smart and well placed shots she remained for years as a top Opp.

In my opinion Brazil didn't have a standout Opp, either in the women's or in their golden era with the men's. The all team was strong and perhaps that's why they winning and dominating. There was Giba, Dante and Andre Nascimento (Anderson for first sub). This last one played as Opp. Sheila Castro played a similar role—the mode in a perfect machine. A well-functioning team doesn't need 30 points from Egonu or Boskovic in every game. That's more of a sign of weakness.

imo Sheilla from 2008-2010 was abble to carry a team but Brazil had great OH and MB at the time so the team was balanced.

André Nascimento was more setter dependent imo. Ricardinho made he play way better as the whole team. Giba and Dante were some thing else.

if you want to win trophies, in club or NT, in the last 8 years, it is not possible to do so without a top OPP. Of course, a team also needs to satisfy other conditions to win but usually teams that can secure a top opp, also are either big/rich enough and have access to these other conditions…

  • In women: yes, but for men, look at Italy from the 2022 World Champ—gold: Romano in Opp—or Zaksa from his Champions League winning seasons: Kaczmarek. It's not impossible that such a team will emerge for the women, either.

I think it's more fair to say Euro teams can't win without a top OP hero-baller. Annie Drews was good but that's not how USA won tournaments. Not really even Italy these days but you can have that one

I suppose China doesn't make the OG cut because that was before this new "modern" era (which will end)

In history also Europe have a big hitter: Artamonova, Gamova, Jelic, Togut, Neslihan Demir, Brakocevic etc.

She had power, but her vision of the court made hew play smarter. She always choiced the right shot. And her technical skills were outstanding. Nowadays opposites are beast phisically and most of them have poor or average technical skills.

Mari in her prime was even stronger as an opposite than Sheila. She actually scored almost 30 points for game.

Wada can pull a 30 too and nobody's calling her a physical player. Technical skills can vary depending on someone's build because you don't want someone overdoing it and then end up with a really bad shoulder injury that will basically end their career.

Not an opp, but Ebata had 36 pts vs China during the 2013 World Grand Prix and again nobody ever called her a physical player despite leading Japan more than Saori or Nagaoka ever did.

  • Any predictions for today?
    my:

Poland - Japan 1:3 (I want to be wrong about winner team:whistle:)

    Brazil - Italy 3:2

  • I´m optimist 3:0 Poland
