2025 AVC Women's Nations Cup

Looks like Kazachstan is a little bit in front of Vietnam for now! The highest ranked non-VNL team is currently Ukraine (15) with 186 points. The best AVC team is Kazakhstan (29) with 124. I don't know if they (or Vietnam) will have enough matches this summer to catch up but who knows :flower:

Even if Kaz wins this tournament in straight sets, to my knowledge they are not playing another point-awarding tournament this year. VIE may have a very slim chance at VNL because they can get lots of points for winning at SEA VLeague in July and WCH in August. But honestly it’s not happening this cycle since VIE is too far behind in points. I haven’t even tried calculating the points but they probably will need to beat Kenya, Germany, and Poland at WCH :cheesy:

  • Rest Day today.

A look at the standings after 3 days of competition and with 2 days remaining in the pool stage. I suspect the final standings for Pool A would be the same as this one, whereas for Pool B there could be changes up and down the table :

  • Does anybody know why Malaysia doesn't want to compete? I remember that they were taking part in Challenge Cup competition few years ago.

  • Iranian coach really messed up this match with her mistake. at 21-20 she made a double sub to serve and block better for 1 point but they were 5th and 6th subs (which the whole Iranian bench forgot) and forced to play the rest of set with this team which had 3 MBs and 2 setters + 1 opposite!!

never saw such a thing before :wall: Kazakhstan got away easily

At that stage (21-20) I thought they had a chance to take the 4th and then even the decider. At every match prior to this one they have lost the first set then recovered and win. It seems they needed time to get fired up.

and yes, the mess up didn't help at all :(

This is a very young team, despite the defeat today they still had a great tournament. the coach makes a lot of changes each match so it's understandable they need time in each match to find their rhythm

that was the right call by the federation, throwing away the lazy previous generation, they probably can still beat team but I like these girls much much more.

  • If PH wins against NZ and loses against Kazakhstan (which is most likely to happen), is it gonna be a battle of points against Iran to get the 2nd rank in their pool?

They need a win against both NZ and Kazakhstan for SF as Iran is expected to win against Mongolia tomorrow. Also, to top the pool, they'll need to win 3-0 or 3-1 against Kazakhstan, if not we need to look at sets or even point ratio, I think.

It has been a joy to watch them play. They are so lively and energetic and don't hold back at all. No 77 Masi (17 yo) is only 170cm but she can hit the ball really well. No 9 Reyhan is 193cm, and already an impressive middle blocker. The whole team seems to be enjoying themselves on and off the court. Lovely to see

  • Most improved team is definitely Hong Kong. My mind is still stuck in the era that they are easy to win against, hence, I am surprised by their wins (good surprise). Did HK invest in their women's training and development more?

Volleyball used to be a recreational activity in Hong Kong, played in schools and social clubs. However as it became more popular volleyball clubs were formed. Currently HK have both men's and women's professional leagues. As society prospered, the government began spending more money to fund sporting facilities, equipment and coaches to improve their standards. Indoor sports such as fencing, badminton and even volleyball benefitted. Hong Kong youngsters are also becoming taller, so that helps, eventhough you wouldn't find girls as tall as Yuan Xinyue or Li Yingying

Li Yingying is not even that tall, only 192

  • Last day of the pool stage. Pool B is coming down to the wire with the top three positions to be decided in the Kazakhstan - Philippines match as Iran is expected to beat Mongolia. Positions are decided by match won/lost, then points...

Kaz vs Phi is scheduled for 10:00 gmt+7 (around 2 hours time)
