  • Great article

Dream team by Guidetti, Svetlana Ilicic and Gerte Vande Broek

    My fave lines:

Maja’s block would scare the opposition and could change the course of a match, I said it many times. You literally can see how players starts to tip, or make many errors because of sharp diagonal they are trying to spike because They are scared of Poljak block.

De Gennaro is literally LIVING LEGEND, their is no player or coach who is not amazed by her game. LEGEND.

If you were to ask 100 coaches to pick their ideal libero, I believe 99% would choose De Gennaro. Moreover, she is almost like a second setter on the court, an ability that no other libero has. She is the only libero who can set a first-tempo attack for a middle blocker from behind the 3-metre line.”“I think Monica is something truly special and I do not think we have seen anyone like her in many years,”

    About Boskovic and Egonu.

“To choose between Boskovic and Egonu is a hard thing to do. I believe Egonu still has so much room for improvement and in some years, she will become the best player for this position. You may compare Tijana and Paola to Messi and Ronaldo"

    ARTICLE IN FULL:

    Setter – Maja Ognjenovic (SRB)

The panel agreed to star their work by picking the ideal setter for such a ‘Dream Team’, since this, as Vande Broek stressed, has much influence on the decisions to make for the remaining positions. The setter embodies the style of Volleyball a team plays and eventually Ognjenovic emerged as the chosen one.

“I have been playing against her for many years and this season I coached her for the very first time. Maja can adjust to any sort of conditions and needs – she can play high, she can play fast and adapts to the players she is competing with in a very good way. Moreover, she has won everything with the national team and at club level as well and her leadership skills are unquestionable too. Everyone enjoys playing with her,” Guidetti said.

Middle blockers – Maja Poljak (CRO) and Milena Rasic (SRB)

It is somehow evident that anyone taking this position has to display an outstanding ability to block. That is the quintessence of a good middle blocker. “To this extent, I believe that Maja Poljak was truly exceptional. Maja’s block would scare the opposition and could change the course of a match,” Guidetti said.

“It is something we knew very well when she was on our team. One block by Maja would pave the way for a few points in a row for us. Moreover, she had a great ability to perform the one-leg attack behind the setter, which is one of the main roles a middle blocker has to fulfil.”

“A middle blocker has to block and attack, as far as possible, equally well,” said Ilic. “Milena Rasic and Maja Poljak have always been outstanding to this extent. Moreover, they both are exceptional team players.”

Libero – Monica De Gennaro (ITA)

The last player to take to the court at the start of every match, the libero plays a key role in modern Volleyball as well. “The libero is the only player that can only make mistakes, as they score no points. The libero has to possess and show much resilience, the ability to clear their head after a mistake, since liberos are responsible for organising their team’s defence,” said Vande Broek. “If you were to ask 100 coaches to pick their ideal libero, I believe 99% would choose De Gennaro. Sometimes it is difficult to motivate young players to play in this position, but Monica is perfect if you want to inspire the youngsters. You can feel and see that she enjoys playing in that role. Moreover, she is almost like a second setter on the court, an ability that no other libero has.”

“I think Monica is something truly special and I do not think we have seen anyone like her in many years,” Ilic commented. “She has an amazing ability to read the game; she can truly change the course of a match and is the only libero who can set a first-tempo attack for a middle blocker from behind the 3-metre line.”

    Opposite – Tijana Boskovic (SRB)

The expectations around an opposite hitter are for this player to score as many points as possible. “Boskovic is, in my opinion, the most complete player right now, especially because she is so good at blocking and serving as well at attacking. She has the ability to make up even for a bad pass or set – and she can make the difference also through her back-row attacks,” said Guidetti.

“To choose between Boskovic and Egonu is a hard thing to do. I believe Egonu still has so much room for improvement and in some years, she will become the best player for this position. You may compare Tijana and Paola to Messi and Ronaldo. They are from the same generation, both have been very successful from a very young age, and yet at this stage, Boskovic is the no. 1,” commented Vande Broek.

Outside hitters – Gözde Kirdar (TUR) and Francesca Piccinini (ITA)

This was the most difficult choice to make, since European Volleyball has produced so much quality in this position. “Gözde is someone like Steven Gerrard for Liverpool. She is not only an incredible player, and especially a great receiver, but she has the right mentality as well,” Vande Broek said.

“I have been working with her for many years and Gözde has been leading by example, at every stage of her career. She is an ideal captain, she pushes always hard and enjoys setting higher and higher goals to herself and the team,” Guidetti added.

“Such a team would not be complete without someone like Piccinini,” he continued. “She has achieved unprecedented success, her resume knows no equal and together with Gözde, she would combine to account for a very solid defence, a bit of American-style Volleyball, if we can put it this way,” Guidetti concluded.

  • And you have video on youtube where they are choosing between 4 players for top spot.

Vande Broek said that for him Wolosz is the best setter in the World because He wants from his team to play fast game as She is.

So you have many different views from them and I love it.

  • I love what Guidetti said about Egonu.

Their is no single player who can play AS Egonu when She is playing her best match. I mean We saw in last two years what She is doing when She is in the beast mode. But He still has chose Boskovic for this decade, especially praised her attacking of out of system balls. And her back row attack, but for the next decade We will see.

  • I have some time on my hands, so I'm doing a Beauty team male-version, cos why not?

OH: Cebulj, Deroo Subs: Louati, Podlesnykh

MB: Vigrass, Loser (I figured there are too many good looking MBs, but these two appeal to me)

    S: Kobzar, Brizzard

OP: Poletaev, Sokolov (special mention to Moroz, he was the sexiest volleyball player for me lol)

L: Grebennikov (I can't think of others besides Jenia?)

  • Comparing Boskovic and Egonu to Messi and Ronaldo of volleyball is one hand a very obvious move (but it's only obvious because it seems so self-evident and true) but on the other, I've never seen any member on this site do it openly, so good of them to verbalise something I'm sure many of us were thinking but weren't willing, for whatever reason, to say out loud. But it has to be said that the existence of Zhu as part of the Big 3 as opposed to Big 2+1 in football (Neymar) makes the analogy less than ideal.

  • Loser is a thing of beauty. I would add Kochanowski of Poland on the MB line up.

and yasss to Kobzar & Poletaev.
