Part of the reason for the popularity in Azerbaijan is due to the fact that the country has been paying large amounts of money to attract the best foreign players to play in their domestic league.

Has that success translated into the national team, not really in my opinion.

The reason why volleyball is so popular in Japan is that the Japanese women and men's teams were successful. Even as the teams performed worse (the 1990s) the game was still popular because the older stars moved into coaching or commentary. Plus they had strong domestic leagues and lower level support systems (through schools and universities).

In the US, volleyball has always been more popular with women than with men. Part of this was due to the ruling of Title IX, which made educational funding of sports equal for boys and girls. American football has the most athletes under scholarship for men, so volleyball was not chosen with men at most schools, but volleyball for women was almost immediately accepted. As the number of schools playing volleyball at the college level increased (as well in high school), more parents and people have become involved in the sport. However, there is still not a professional league in the US. This is partially due to the size of the country, but also the economics. Major League Volleyball in the 1980s failed due to few immediate rivals, played in smaller gymnasiums (high school or smaller colleges) and little name recognition of players. In the 1980s we would very rarely see the national team on television, usually only the Olympics. At least now with the internet, you can see where the national team players are playing (foreign country and team), track them on twitter and maybe catch some highlights on youtube.

    Day 3:

    Chile-Colombia 3:2 (34-36, 25-20, 25-18, 28-30, 15-10). Chile goes to intercontinental tournament for final spot.

Argentina-Venezuela 3:2 (25-12, 22-25, 25-12, 25-27, 15-12). Yeah, I don't have any logical explanation for this result either. It was a mix of the heat, the crowd enthusiasm and Argentina just brainfarting in key moments. There was a moment by the end of the 4th set when suddenly it got tight (Argentina was in the way to close it, but brainfart happened) and Conte fell and seemingly tore his ankle... I think I shit my underwear in that exact moment... fortunately he could still play and we escaped a big embarassment.

Unless Argentina used the exact same team during the World Cup, the South American Championships and the Olympic Qualifier? Those guys would be on fumes after playing basically non-stop for 1 month, plus the travel.

    Scenarios to Reach 2nd Round
    Clinched in Red

    Pool A
    1. Bulgaria 2-0, 5 points, 6-2 sets W-L
    2. Netherlands 2-0, 5 points, 6-3

    3. Czech Republic 0-2, 1 point, 3-6
    4. Germany 0-2, 1 point, 2-6
Winner of Bulgaria vs. Netherlands will win group, loser will finish 2nd
Winner of Czech Republic vs. Germany will finish 3rd

    Pool B
    1. Italy 2-0, 6 points, 6-0 sets W-L
    2. France 2-0, 6 points, 6-1

    3. Estonia 0-2, 0 points, 1-6
    4. Croatia 0-2, 0 points, 0-6
Winner of Italy vs. France will win group, loser will finish 2nd
Winner of Estonia vs. Croatia will finish 3rd

    Pool C
    1. Poland 2-0, 6 points, 6-1 sets W-L
    2. Slovenia 1-1, 3 points, 4-3

    3. Belgium 1-1, 3 points, 3-3
    4. Belarus 0-2, 0 points, 0-6
Poland will win group with win vs. Belarus. Could win group with a loss, but need Slovenia and Belgium to go 5 sets (win on match points Poland 6, Belgium or Slovenia at 5)
Slovenia has clinched due to sets-ratio over Belarus if they tie on wins and points (Slovenia at worst is 4-6 vs. Belarus at best 3-6)
Belgium needs one set against Slovenia to advance. Belgium can win group if Poland loses in straight sets and Belgium wins in straight sets
Belarus needs Belgium to lose in straight sets, and by a lot of points to have any chance. Plus Belarus have to sweep Poland, not looking good for them

    Pool D
    1. Russia 2-0, 6 points, 6-0 sets W-L
    2. Serbia 2-0, 5 points, 6-2

    3. Slovakia 0-2, 0 points, 2-6
    4. Finland 0-2, 0 points, 0-6
Winner of Russia vs. Serbia will win group, loser will finish 2nd
Winner of Slovakia vs. Finland will finish 3rd

Polish worst case scenario USA win 1 match in 3 sets and 1 match in 5 sets and Italy sweeps Poland tomorrow.
All tied at 29 and 10-1. Sets ratio USA 31-7, Italy 30-7, Poland 30-11. Poland would be 3rd
Even if USA went 4 sets in one of the matches Poland still out.
Poland needs 2 sets to get ticket. Gets to 30 points without win, Italy can't match, USA can.

Russia needs 2 wins (not 5 sets, unless Italy swept by Poland), Argentina win tomorrow and Poland win to finish 2nd.
USA need one win and Italy loss to clinch. Two USA wins guarantee spot also unless both in 5 sets.

You do realize it 1:15 AM on the East Coast of the USA.
    Argentina dead.
Russia must win out and Poland lose out, plus USA loss to Argentina.
Italy needs to win tomorrow, Poland loss against Japan helps, but USA loss helps more.
USA just needs to win out. 5 set matches will complicate set ratios.
Poland wins today, all but in, ahead on points ratio and sets ratio with Italy. Italy would have to win 3-0 and big points spread and hope for USA loss against Argentina if USA beats Russia.

Point Maximum and Ticket to Rio
    TICKET CLINCHED
    TICKET POSSIBLE

    32 Points Poland (11-0)
    31 Points Poland (11-0)
    30 Points Poland (11-0), or Poland (10-1), Italy (10-1), USA (10-1)
If Poland vs. Italy goes 5 and Italy wins, Poland reach 30, Italy 29
If Italy reaches 30, Poland will be at 29 and would need USA to lose with Argentina
If USA reaches 30, Italy beat Poland in 3-4, USA and Italy are both at 30 and go to Rio
    29 Points Poland (10-1), Italy (10-1), USA (10-1)
    28 Points Poland (10-1 or 9-2), Italy (10-1 or 9-2), USA (10-1 or 9-2)
USA and Italy could finish at 28 (9-2) and finish 3rd, by both losing their final matches
    27 Points Poland (9-2), Italy (9-2), USA (9-2)
Russia is out at 27 points (9-2)
    26 Points Argentina (9-2), Italy (9-2), Russia (9-2)
Argentina would need to win in 3 or 4, Russia and Italy both split, Poland lose twice and USA lose twice (once to Russia and once to Argentina)
Italy would split (losing to Argentina in 3-4, beating Poland in 5), Japan beat Poland and Russia, Russia beat USA and USA lose to Argentina
Russia would need 2 wins (USA in 3-4, Japan in 5), USA beat Argentina in 5, Poland beat Italy in 5, Argentina beat Italy in 3-4 and Japan beat Poland in 3-4
