Comparing the best spiker stats from 2011 and 2015, this makes me wonder where the huge improvement comes from. In 2011 no player was above 50% and only two players above 45%, while in 2015 we have 4 players with 50% or higher and almost the whole top 10 above 45%.
Possible reasons:
- in 2015 there were more weak opponents against which the top spikers could attack with high % (counter-argument: some of the top attackers were rested against weak opponents)
- the quality of the attackers has increased
- the quality of the setters has increased (not confirmed by the best setter stats)
- the quality of reception has increased (not confirmed by the best receiver stats)
- the quality of the blockers has decreased (not confirmed by the best blocker stats)
- the quality of defense has decreased (not confirmed by the best digger stats)Interested to hear opinions.
I think it has to do with the composition of the teams. Even if the starters rested, the low level teams were so weak that the reserves could still spike amazingly. Also, Korea/Dominican are much worse than they were, but still got the top players. So it was relatively easier to kill balls.
Also, a lot of the top finishing teams are simply not good defensively - Serbia and Russia are offensive teams, China is still getting back to historical norms, USA is not the block powerhouse it used to be. Also, the top team mix favored offense. In 2011, Russia was replaced by Italy (one of the best defensive teams in the world, and they will also not kill as many balls as Russia) and Brazil (probably the best defensive team) was there as well. That would depress spiker percentages considerably.

I wonder if Japan may surprise China. Last day of long tournament, coming off of a very tough match against Russia.

Pelin is not at Columbia, but at St. John's. She has so far not shown a very good level. Not sure U20 team is missing that much.
-
I'm not sure why, but some clubs in European leagues have made signings and not announced them. It is odd!

thank you. i wish women would stop changing their names… it's hard to keep up…
It's especially harder for Russian women because they have so few first names that are common!

I think Harmotto isn't 100% healthy, in the photos posted by USAV she is always with the bench players and Dixon with the starters.
Harmotto will not be playing full-time, even if she is "healthy" because of past injury issues. Akinradewo and Harmotto are clear starters, but we will rarely see them play together. So it's not surprising if Dixon or Gibby take reps with the starters. Then again, it can be hard to determine who the "starters" are at this point - Robinson or Hill? Glass or Kreklow? -
I think this is wrong. FIVB would not have USA-Germany play 3 times.
Never mind. It seems this is right. silly FIVB

Where is Slovenia?

Egonu had her share of high level experience with Italy senior NT already this summer which Hande did not, so I still think for her playing U23 is really good. Italy obviously doesn't care about U23 WCH at all, otherwise they had surely taken Egonu, Orro, Malinov etc there...
Does anyone care about U23? It does not make sense to me to hold such a Championship. At that age, you are already a national team-level player or a solid professional; I don't see the developmental purpose.

Congrats to Italy. They played composed.
USA did not pass well, and then played mental for the rest of the day.

I think USA has a good chance against Italy. USA has more balance on the roster and is not as reliant on one player.
USA can put a 6 foot 6, great natural blocker in front of Egonu, as well as disciplined athletic middles. They will not stop her completely, but slow her down enough to let USA's serve game and offensive balance take the advantage.

USA versus China in the Semifinals

Does Serbia have no other liberos coming up? It has been the same two for many years, and they really need to upgrade.

DR-USA stream?!?!?

Hello ,
How you can judge the chances of each team ?
I don't know about other teams, but this is a strong age group for USA. They are very big, athletic and powerful. I expect a good result, as long as passing (maybe the only weakness) is okay. -
Any way to watch video?

In the report I read its said she sent a letter to Tianjin letting them know that for some family reason she cant leave USA for the next 6 mouths, so she couldn't play for the club. (If google translator worked fine. )
An explanation that is more realistic and less "drama" - It could have to do with the ongoing divorce. They may be settling custody rights between parents, and you can't do joint custody if the kid is in China. To take her daughter abroad without permission from the courts would be very damaging, as would leaving her daughter behind in the US (I could see the courts give custody to the father in such a circumstance).

I have to say Russia received serve very well. It will be interesting if they can keep that up (esp. when Kosheleva comes into the lineup).

Murphy has yet another poor performance, finishing with .000 efficiency. Karsta Lowe continues to show herself as Team USA's breakout player.
