what pool of death? not in 2008: BRA, ITA, RUS, SRB vs. USA, CHN, CUB, JPN.

    2008 Scenario:

    POOL A
USA was the dark horse of the competition and a major surprise. But before they won siver, people have little expectations from them.
    Cuba was already in decline.
China struggled w/ injuries and their form wasn't near anywhere compared to 2004 when they won gold. they were able to manage only because of Wang Yimei

    POOL B
Brazil - #1 in world rankings
Italy - #2 in world rankings and the only one team who was considered to have a chance of defeating Brazil (they did defeat them at the 2007 world cup)
    Russia - Defending World Champion
Serbia - it's this Olympics that they have shown they're on the way of becoming a powerhouse thanks to brakocevic

Pool B WAS the pool of death (and has always been for some reason). The games just looked easy simply because Brazil demolished the competition that year.

Brazilians are emotional peeps, that for sure. However, let's not forget that what happened last QF is shocking.. really, really shocking.

You're defending your title which you've successfully won for 2 consecutive OG cycles.
You're playing on home soil where the crowd, most often than not, consider you sore losers if you've won silver, not gold.
Win or lose, you know that you'll be retiring after Rio and as much as possible, you want to retire with a bang by having a medal around your neck.
Brazil is always almost on top four on every competition since the 90's. For a team who has achieved so much, not being on the semis is already an epic failure.
The expectations for the entire team was very, VERY high, not just from their fans but from themselves as well. The achievement this team has done in the past decade is nothing short of miracle and while I don't think this loss would taint the fantastic things they've done, I'm sure the brazilian fans wouldn't forget this OG for a LOOONNGGG time.

Jacque is by all means a celebrity in Brazil. Of course, all cameras are on her. She's crying almost everywhere? Let her be, it's her right to express her emotions. Since when did crying become a crime?

this is USA's gold medal to lose. China & Serbia are definitely strong but at they are still no match against USA when they are on a roll. W/o Brazil, USA's achilles's heel during OGs, this is USA's chance to finally claim the gold medal.

My dark horse is still Korea. Don't ever underestimate KYK. With ample amount of support from her teammates, she can do wonders.

congrats to China. I was disappointed that Brazil lost since I've always been rooting for them. It would have been nice if they were able to fight for their title.

anyway, I did expect very tough pool B opponents. Since the 90's, OG winners are all from "pool of death".

    Still.... Brazil..... :( ;(

i'm more than pleased that the video challenge is being implemented in this olympics. now, if only the officials would be reliable enough to make sound decisions and interpret the video results correctly then everything would be spicy. haha

Both teams are displaying a below average reception considering this is supposed to be THE Olympics already.
I'll be rooting for Korea because of Kim YK. She, more than anyone else, deserves at least a bronze medal.

Just saying hi after months (or possibly years?) of being on (semi)hiatus.
so psyched up for grand prix and olympics... :drink:

interesting to watch some of these teams and sort of sad to think many of these players won't be at the olympics next year.

for example, in BRA, joyce will probably not be there, ze will probably pick sheilla and tandara. juiciely and adenizia might lose out the backup spot to carol.

in US, the sweepstakes for OPP are fierce: hooker, murphy, lowe, fawcett… only two will be picked. for MB: foluke, harmotto, dixon, adams, paolini, jackson...

it's either juciely or carol, definitely. juciely is playing incredibly well. adenizia has lost her spot, in my opinion.

I know that it was a friendly and all and not really a serious match..... but why do i feel that Virna Dias is in a much better form, even though it's been years since she retired, than many of her younger peers (paula, elisangela, etc.)? She rocked that match!
