It used to be much worse, though. When they were on top of their game in 2004-2006, there were no ethnic Azeris on the team and the only Azerbaijan-born players were the Parkhomenko sisters and Korotenko. At least they seemed to have made some effort into developing the local talent, even though the result hasn't been that great.
I really wonder what will happen with their volleyball after this tournament. The Azerbaijani league seems to have flopped completely. They have qualified for the WCh, though, so I guess the powers that be will probably wait at least another year before they pull the plug on volleyball there.

Parkhomenko sisters and Korotenko were born Azerbaijan citizens ! In Caucasus especially it's very dangerous to think from the ethnic backgrounds of somebody. -

- In general, doping use in volleyball makes less sense than in other sports. Strength and endurance are not as important as in other sports (running, cycling, swimming, weight lifting, soccer etc.). Volleyball is in that sense similar to tennis where we do not see many doping cases (could also be a problem with testing though...). The main benefits would be high concentration (there are some legal options: e.g. coffein, nikotin. Gamova used smelling salts) over a long period of time and regeneration.
This last point doesn't match according to me.
All sportsmen and sportswomen say that doping is useless in THEIR sport.
But some volleyball players have been catched ...
... For Startseva and Gamova, of course I hope it's not a story like that. -
Sirressi was amazing, I'd be mad in case she doesn't get a call from Bonitta. Her passion also encourages her teammates.
Piccinini and Del core, what to say, they are showing that age never matters in volleyball as long as you have outstanding basic skills. I really hope both of them make it to Rio.
I presume it's going to be a rough match for Pomi against Vakifbank, however I want them to win and fingers crossed for them! Andiamo ragazze!

Definitely turning point was the point at 7-5. Eda should have hit a clean ball but it was still block-out and Ferhat made the wrong challenge.
Yes Ferhat made big mistakes during all the tournament. But this one (absolutely a silly challenge) had an heavy cost -
Congratulations Italy! Really! Del Core really underperformed during almost all the tournment, but in the tie-break she just showed all her class, in attack and reception/defense. She started to spike so clever as her golden days.
Orro is also a setter who helps a loooot in block. Egonu didnt spike with convinction the last point, but it was too much pressure for a 17 yo girl. Italy really needs to call back another players. Tokyop tournment wont be so easy.
It is a pity for Turkey, being host and after such an investment. Eda and Neslihan really deserved go to Rio.

And indeed, the Tokyo tournament won't be easy. I think Bonitta knows that. -
