They’re separate tournaments. VTV Binh Dien Cup usually takes place earlier in the year (Feb-May, so I don't think it will happen this year) while VTV Cup is usually in August. Binh Dien Cup is mostly hosted in southern and central/highlands provinces, while VTV Cup is mostly hosted in northern provinces. VTV Cup has more popularity, but in recent editions, Binh Dien Cup has featured stronger teams.

There’s another tournament called Hoa Lu - Binh Dien Cup just for top Viet clubs.

Yes, should be 23-24 (or, just 2023).

It’s amusing, in a lighthearted internet discussion some Thai netizens have claimed that Vietnamese netizens have accuse the Thai team of importing players of mixed ancestry (Thai and Korean or Japanese) from overseas....

Why would the Vietnamese do that ? Lolsss

I think it may be fake news  none of the popular viet vball groups I frequent talks about this. The only discussion I saw about it was actually viet netizens making fun of Thai netizens for thinking they care that much about these players.

On the issue of Viet-Thai netizen drama. I think the only Thai players some viet netizens dislike are Thatdao and Sasipapron, citing that they have “attitude.” Viet netizens like or are neutral about the other Thai players (Wipawee and Nootsara are actually very beloved).

the live stream I was following stop abruptly when the the match ended so I missed the closing ceremony :(

you can see in this video.

The announcer announced the second best middle blocker as “number seventeen from Việt Nam Nguyen Thi Xuan.” The Viet girls looked at each other in confusion, while Indo and PHI girls pointed to Wilda (who also is number 17, and, well, an actual MB) and began to celebrate.

It was a very awkward situation for both Xuan and Wilda. Don’t get me wrong Xuan is an excellent blocker but the award was “Best Middle Blocker” and she registered and played as OP full time.

But also this PHI Squad. It so looks to me that PHI has the players to raise up to the THA VIE level of SEA teams, they just gotta get their stuff together in terms of training and leadership.

They made too many errors, which is understandable for a younger squad. The key to limiting team errors is to train, play, and grow consistently as a team. But from what little I know about PHI volleyball, I doubt they’ll get the chance to do that again.

VTV Binh Dien Long An just won the 2023 Vietnam Youth Championship!

Why matters? Within the last 5 years, the once giant of Vietnamese volleyball has weathered many obstacles and lost their dominance in the Vietnam League. After legendary player Ngoc Hoa retired and several key players transferred out, COVID-19 and serious injuries stunted their most potential stars. They also let 4T - Vietnam’s best player, play in Thailand, Taiwan, and Japan, and refused to hire imports like all of their biggest competitions in the League. The results: they ranked mid-low in the last few years and struggled to place 3rd in the league last year, and lost several domestic tournaments they once were crowned champion. But, what they did right was trusting their youngsters. Several members of the current youth squad have been starting players of the main club for the past few seasons. They had a rough start, of course, but they learned fast both in terms of skills and mentality.

What does the future hold for Long An? This squad is the future of Vietnam volleyball. Several of these youngsters have already been eyed for the national team:

    • 19 yo OP Tra My (highlight here — #1 player in blue/white jersey) is perhaps the most talked about player. Her approach and spiking form reminds me of North Korea’s Jong Jin-Sim.
    • 18 yo MB Nhu Anh
    • 17 yo MB Nhu Ngoc
    • 17 yo OH Lan Vy
    • 17 yo setter Bach Hop
    • 14 yo OH-BM Bao Ngoc

Unfortunately PHI lost their momentum entirely after that crushing loss in the 3rd set :pinch:

PHI did a great job containing Quynh today. But Nguyet Anh and Xuan put up some decent hits, and once again it’s the MBs that carried the offense. We also got to see the rest of the players - Le Thuy, Ninh Anh, Dinh Thuy, Yen Nhi, Thao (young OH Thuy Vi is the only one not put on court so far).

With the likes of 4T, Trinh and Tu Lin, going to the sides is always going to be rewarding...but less so when they meet tall blockers, in which case, fast balls through the middle, especially when you have quick MBs may be better.

which is also why this teams early success is important — it shows Coach Kiet that he can and should be flexible with switching things up, not just a few players on and off the court, but a whole team, play style, and mentality.

No 4T, Trinh, Oanh, NT Trinh, Khanh Dang.....No problem

This 2nd leg squad, imo, plays much closer to the classic Vietnamese volleyball, which heavily relies on MBs for offense. The coach fully took advantage of Kim Thoa’s exceptional ability (and eagerness) to cater for her MBs.

Don’t get me wrong NT Trinh and Tra Giang are also excellent hitters — it’s just the game plan of the 1st squad team isn’t built on MBs being the main attackers.

I don’t think Indonesia expected this switch in play style — they could somewhat contain the OHs but had no idea what to do with the MBs in the match.

    Transfer news & rumors: :call:

Pretty-much confirmed: Legendary MB Pleumjit Thinkaow (Supreme Chonbori 🇹🇭) will be playing for Bo Tu Lenh Thong Tin (Vietnam) in the 2023 national championship.

Rumors: It appears this is an exchange program, so one of the Thong Tin girls may be playing for Supreme Chonbori next season. Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh (OP), Doan Thi Lam Oanh (Setter), and Pham Thi Nguyet Anh (OH) are current Thong Tinh players and have a high chance of being selected for the exchange program.
